To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ISRAEL F. PARKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Tammany, in the county of St. Tammany and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wheelbarrows, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends the provision of a wheel barrow primarily intended for transporting cement, water or other liquids, although susceptible for use in other capacities.

It is the principal object of the invention to mount the load carrying receptacle upon the frame of the barrow for oscillatory movement, whereby it will always maintain a horizontal position irrespective of the angularity of the frame, the swinging movement of the receptacle in assuming its position tending to prevent spilling or splashing of its contents.

Another important object of the invention resides in the provision of means whereby the receptacle can be easily and quickly locked against movement relative to the frame, which is especially desirable to facilitate dumping of the barrow.

With the above and other objects in view which will become obvious as the nature of the invention is better understood from the following description, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.

In the drawing forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation resting upon the surface.

Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the frame elevated.

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the drawing in detail A indicates generally the frame constructed in the usual manner, and ineluding side members 10 connected together by means of the transverse brace rods 11 arranged adjacentthe opposite ends of the Specification of Letters Patent.

bars, while journaled between said bars at the forward end of the frame is the ground wheel 12. The opposite ends of the side bars 10 are extended to provide the handles 13. Rising from the side bars 10 at an appropriate point in their length, are spaced parallel standards 14 which are effectively braced by means of the rods 15 as shown.

The load carrying receptacle 16 can be constructed from any suitable material and in any desired configuration, and has projecting from the opposite sides thereof adjacent its upper edge the trunnions 17 journaled in the openings or bearings 18 in the upper ends of the standards. Manifestly the receptacle 16 is freely pivoted and mounted for oscillatory movement, which permits the receptacle to assume and maintain a horizontal position irrespective ofv the angularity of the frame A. The movement of the receptacle 16 in assuming its position, will tend to prevent spilling or splashing of its contents.

Any suitable means may be employed for the purpose of locking the receptacle 16 against movement relative to the frame A when it is desired, and as shown in this particular instance I employ a hook-like element 19 carried by the receptacle and adapted to engage the transverse brace bar 11 adjacent the handles 13. The receptacle is free to swing upon its pivot while in use for transporting the material, but when it is desired to dump the barrow to discharge its contents, the hook 19 is first arranged to engage the brace bar 11 thereby holding the receptacle immovable with respect to the frame, which is essential to dump the barrow easily.

While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be apparent, I desire to have it understood that the same is merely illustrative of one embodiment of the invention to which I do not limit myself, and that such changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
