Be it known that IQWILLIAM M. AUSTIN, a citizeno'f the United States, and a resident of Elizabeth, in the county of Union "and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Bolt-Board, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved bolt board more especially designed for winding thereon textile fabrics having embroidered borders or other thickened portions and arranged to compensate for the increased thickness .in the embroidered portions with a View to provide a bolt approximately uniform in thickness throughout its length.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a bolt board having one end portion reduced in thickness to accommodate the thickened portion of the fabric.
A practicalembodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

In winding textile fabrics, having e1nbroidered borders or like thickened portions at one side, onto a bolt board of uniform thickness, the embroidered or thickened portions render the bolt thicker at one end than on the other, and hence th bolt does not present a neat appearance, and in packing and shipping takes up more room than necessary. In order to overcome these objectionable features and to render the bolt approximately uniform in thickness through out its length, use is made of a bolt board presently described in detail.

board consists of a main piece 10, of cardboard, wood or other suitable material, and the main piece 10 1s overlaid at opposite side by body pieces 11 and 12 extending from one end of the main piece 10 to with in a distance of the other end of the main piece 10 so as to leave a portion of the bolt board thinner at one end than at the remaining portion to accommodate embroidered borders 13 or the like in the textile fabric wound upon the bolt board in the usual. manner, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. The body pieces 11 and 12 are attached to the main piece 10 in spaced relation thereto by crossbars 15, 16 and 17, of which the crossbars 15 and. 16 are adjacent the ends of the body pieces 1.1 while the crossbar 17 is intermediate the crossbar-s 15 and 16.
In practice, the body pieces 11 and 12 are inclined toward each other from the outer end to the inner end thereof so as to render the body of the bolt wedge-shaped, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 3, it being understood that for the purpose mentioned the crossbars 15, 1.6 and 17 are made correspondingly thinner, that is, the outermost crossbar 15 is thickestfthe crossbar 17 is somewhat thinner than the crossbar 15*, and the crossbar 16 is thinner than the crossbar 17.
The body pieces 11 and 12 as well as the corresponding opposite portions of the main piece 10 are tapered on the inner end to the outer end thereof, as plainly shown in Fig. 2, to compensate for the increase in thickness of the outer end of the bolt board to insure uniform winding of the textile fabric on the bolt board.
Usually the embroidered portion does not extend to the very edge of the fabric, and in order to accommodate this embroidered outer edge use is made of crossbars 20 attached to the free end of the main piece 10 at opposite sides thereof. By reference to Fig. 3, it will be noticed that when the textile fabric 141 is wound up on the bolt board it is uniform in thickness throughout its length thus forming a neat package which can be readily packed in suitable cases, envelops or the like.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 4:, 5 and 6, the body piece 12 with the corresponding crossbars 15, 16, 17 is omitted, and in this case the main. piece 2:? is overlapped on one side by a body piece 2-6 resting at its side on tapering strips 27 to which both pieces 25 and 26 are fastened by glue, nails or other fastening devices. The body piece 26 terminates a distance from one outer end of the piece, 25 and the outer end of this main piece 25 extends beyond the body piece 26. A crossbar 28, similar to the one on the bolt board shown and above described with reference to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, is used.
Two bolt boards, such as shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, may be placed back to back to form a double bolt board, as illustrated in Fig. 7.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 8 and 9, the main piece 30 is overlaid by a body piece 81 fastened at its outer end by a crosspiece 32to the corresponding end of the body piece 30, and the inner end of the body piece 31 is fastened by staples or other fas tening means 38 to the body piece 30. The pieces 30 and 31 are tapering the same as above described in reference to the bolt board shown in the preceding figures.

A bolt board upon which a fabric having a thickened portion is adapted to be wound, comprising a main piece, a body piece of less length than the said main piece, the said pieces being wedge-shaped, cross- 7 bars connecting the said body piece with the said main piece, and a crossbar attached to the free end of the said main piece.
6. A bolt board, comprising a main piece tapering at the sides, and a body piece over lying the said main piece and similarly tapered at the sides, the said body piece terminating a distance from the widest end of the said main piece.
7. A bolt board, comprising a main piece tapering at the sides, a body piece overlying the said main piece and similarly tapered at the sides, the said body piece terminating a distance from the Widest end of the said main piece, and connecting bars connecting the said main piece and the said body piece with each other and holding the same spaced apart.
8. A bolt board, comprising a main piece tapering at the sides, a body piece overlying the said main piece and similarly tapered at the sides, thesaid body piece terminating a distance from the Widest end of the said main piece, connectingbars connecting the said main piece and the said body piece with each other and holding the same spaced apart, and a crossbar on the widest end of the said main piece;
