JOHN B. FLINN, OF JOHNSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
DEPOSIT KND COLLECTION BEGEPTACLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that JOHN R. FLINN, a citi zen=' of the United States, residing at Johntown, in the county of Cambria-and State of Pennsylvania, has invented certain new and useful Improvements iniDeposit and Collec tion Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
-This invention relates to deposit and 001- lection receptacles; v
This invention has for an object to provide a container or receptacleadapted to be placed in convenient proximity to the door, and to receive milk bottles, or the like, to house the same from the elements and prevent access thereto or casual displacement thereof by dogs or cats, but to permit access thereto by authorized persons.
Another object of the invention is to provide a container with a top'having an'opening therein through which a bottle may be placed, and to equip the container-with a cover which may be placed and locked over the" opening to i The invention has fora further object to provide a container to which access may be gained through a side and the top, and to equi the containerwithinternal means operab e by the weight of the bottle to coact with a c osure topositivelyprevent communication to theinterior of the container through said top. The above, and
description'of the-present prefer-re embodi ment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein: p
: Figurel 1s a perspective view of a deposit and collection receptacle constructed according tothe present invention, andapplied to a suitable support adjacent a door, showing the cover in an open position.

. Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of the device, showing the door-in open position, parts of the container being broken away to disclose details.

prevent access to the bottle in the container. 2 Y
other I objects and advantages of this invention will be more particularly brought out in the followin detailed to provide a supporting leg 12.

Application filedOctober 25, 1916. Serial No. 127,558.
Fig. 6 is a detail fragmentary perspective View of the latch mechanism.
In the drawings, in order to illustrate the application of the invention, a portion of a door and door casing l are shown, the latter havmg a bracket 2 associated therewith upon which my improved container, generally in this instance shown the container mounted upon the bracket-0r shelf 2 it is nevertheless to be understood that. the container may at any desired place.
The container 3 is in this instance shown designatedB, is mounted. -Although I have be supported in any other desired way, and
to be of an oblong configuration and is preferably made of sheet metal, although any other suitable material may be used. .One of the walls of the container is removed and the margin turned inwardly at rightangles to provide a flange 4. A door 5 is hingedly mounted onone sid'eJof the container, at the jointure of the flange and the body of the container, and is equipped on its inner face;
with a lock 6, the slidin engageable beneath the desired to lock the door 5,
An opening 7 is formed in the top ofthe bolt of which is ange 4 when is container and is shown to be of a size suificiently large to accommodate'amilk bottle, although the size, or number ofgopenings in the top maybe varied, to accord with the magnitude of the container, and the number of bottles, or other articles which;are desired to be housed. To close communication through the opening 7 a cover. or lid. 8 is hinged on the top of the container at one side, the opposite side of the container being" engaged by a right angle flange.:9,whichdepends from the cover. A knob lOis mounted in the cover 8 for convenience in operating the latter.
Arranged within the containeris an article supporting structure, consisting of a platform 11, a portion of thefront margin of which is bent downwardly at ri ht angles arranged ears 13 are bent upwardly from the lateral margins of the platform at a point intermediate the rear margin of the platform and the transverse center. The ears 13 are pivotally mounted on studs 14,
arallelly the latter being carried by. straps 15. The
straps 15 are secured to'the lateral walls of vthe container in proximity to the lower end of the latter, and have the free terminals thereof appreciably spaced from the convent interference of an article with the link tainer to avoid contact of said cars 13, with the container. The rear margln of the. platform is equip ed with an upstanding finger 16, which is pivotally engaged with one end of a link 17. As will be noted, the leg 12 limits movement of the platform 11 and also serves in the capacity of a means for holding the platform in an inclined position, as
- shownin Fig. 2 of the drawings, in order to prevent the'article carried ,by the latform, from accidentally falling out, o the container when the door 5 is 0 ened.
The upper terminal of the lin 17 is pivotally engaged with a weight member 18, the
latter being. movable on an axis 19. Downward movement of the weight 18 is limited by an abutment 20, which is carried by the One terminal rear wall of the container.
- p of the weight 18 is inclined and'has a portion projecting therefrom at its vertex, to
provide a lug or finger 21. The fin er 21 is A guard member 25 is engagedwith the.
opposite lateral walls of the container and is disposed at. aninclination across the container, directly in front of the lower end of the link 17, and the upper end of the finger 16. The guard member will of course premember 17 and the fin or 16.
In use of this device will assume that the door 5 is closed and in a locked position, and that the cover 8 is in an open position. An-
article may then be deposited in thefcontainer through the top "opening 7. V The weight of the article on the platform 11 will force the latter downwardly into a position as shown in Fig. 2, in which position the latch member 23 will be arranged across the 'opening25 inthe top of the container.. The person depositing the article may then urge the cover 8 into snug engagement with the top of the container, thereby causing themeans to incline the casual displacement o the. bottle t rough said side opening, and a guard. member locking member 2 1 tobe engaged'with the latch member 23. When it is desired toremove the contents of the container, the lock 6 is opened by means of a suitable kc and the door 5 thenswung out in the usua way. When it is desired to leave articles, such as empty milk bottles in the container for collection, the said articles may be placed on the platform 11, after which the door 5 is closed and locked, and the lid 8 moved into close proximity to the top of the container to protect the article from the elements, but
at the same time not looking the lid, to per- 7 mit access tothe' container through the open ,ing 7, for removing'the empty milk bottle or .thelike.
It-is of'course understood that changes and modifications may be made in the above specifically described. embodiment of this in vention, without departing from the spirit thereof, and being restricted only by the scope of the following claims? j What is claimed is:
1. A deposit and collection'receptacle cluding a container provided with top and side openings and equipped with a cover to close said top opening, an article supporting platform arranged in the container and movable under pressure of the article, means actuated. by the platform to lock the cover when the latter is urged into engagement with the top of the container, and means to limit downward movement of said latform, said means also inclining the plat orm substantially as set forth.
2; A milk bottle holder including .an-
tainer provided with an opening in its to and an o ening in its side, a closure for sai top opening, a platform mounted in the contamer to receive the bottle, means o era-.
tively connected with the platform for ock ing the closure under pressure of the bottle,
latform' to revent mounted in the container toprevent contact of the bottle with the locking means.
In testimony whereof I my, sign ,1 I JOHN R.- FLINN.
