Be it known that we, IRA ULFERS and FRED C. AsIMos, citizens of the United States, and residents of Freeport, county of Stephenson, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vapor-Lamps, of'which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to vapor lamps and seeks to provide a simple, efficient construction having means for vaporizing liquid fuel, mixing the vapor with air and burning the mixture to heat a mantle to incandescence, the construction being such that the parts can be readily taken apart for cleaning and removing any deposited carbon. The invention consists in the features of improvement hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the preferred form in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Vapor lamps usually comprise a supply tank adapted to contain liquid fuel under pressure, a vapor generator pipe provided with a mixing chamber and a burner, and suitable valve mechanism for controlling the flow of the liquid fuel from the supply tank to the generator pipe. `Such lamps, particularly if kerosene isr used, are apt to be clogged by deposits invention provides which will operate which the parts may for cleaning and for carbon.

ably mounted upon the neck 5 of the supply tank. Preferably, a coupling plug 7 is securely threaded into a socket formed in the lower end of the bushing 6 and this plug is removably threaded into the neck 5 of the tank. A packing ring 8, preferably of rubber cork compound, surrounds the coupling plug 7 interposed between the bushing 6 and neck 5 of the tank to form a tight joint between these parts. Preferably, as shown, the packing ring is arranged within a seat formed in the lower face of the bushing 6. A fuel supply pipe 9 is threaded at its upper end into the bore of the coupling plug 7, or is otherwise suitably secured thereto, and this pipe depends into the tank to a point adjacent the bottom thereof. The bushing or valve casing 6 is lower end with a series of openings 10 adapted to be engaged by a suitable spanner wrench, so that the bushing 6 and fuel supply pipe 9 can be removed from the tank and these parts can then be readily cleaned.
A passageway 11 for liquid fuel extends through the valve casing or bushing 6 and the How therethrough is controlled by a needle valve 12. The latter is provided with an enlarged portion 13 which is threaded into a transverse bore formed in the bushing 6. The outer end of this bore is enlarged to form a stufling box 14 around the stem of the valve. A gland 15 is threaded into the stufHng box and compresses the packing 16 therein around the valve stem.
Suitable means is provided for supplying liquid fuel and air under pressure to the tank. For this purpose a nipple 17 extends through an opening in the upper portion of the tank and is provided with an'enlarged outer end and a screw-threaded portion that engages a nut or washer 18, that is soldered to the inner wall of the tank. A valve casing 2O is arranged within the nipple and is -provided with a flange 21 which overlaps canbe placed'in the tank. By merely loosena bore and the lower end ing the valve 24, air can be forced into the tank to place the liquid fuel therein under pressure and, when the desired pressure is reached, the valve 24 is closed.
The bushing or valve casing 6 is provided with a reduced, externally threaded portion 25 having an enlarged'bore or recess therein and a cap-shaped nut or coupling 26 is removably threaded thereon. A packing ring 27, preferably formed of a rubber cork compound, arranged within a seat in the upper portion of the coupling 26, engages the upper end oit the part 25 to form a tight joint therewith, and, Jfor removing the vcoupling, the latter is provided with openings 28 to receive a spaniier wrench. The upper portion of the coupling 26 is provided with of a generator pipe 29 is securely threaded or otherwise lixed within this bore. r
The upper end of the generator' pipe is provided with an extension or tipl 30 which is provided with a contracted discharge orilice 31 for the generated vapor. The extension or tip 30 is threaded upon the upper end of the `generator pipe 29 and, throughout the greater portion of its length, is provided and is provided at its upper with a bore of the same size as the generator pipe. A mixing chamber and burner Vare mounted upon the upper end of the generator pipe. In the construction shown, the mixing chamber 32 is cylindrical, is closed at its upper end and at its lower end is provided with an inverted burner head 33 which surrounds the extension or tip of the generator pipe. The cylindrical mixing chamber is provided with a hollow cross-piece or transverse portion 34 which is bored out to form air inlet ports, and, preferably, as showin air inlet pipes 35 are threaded into these ports. The transverse portion 34 is provided with a depending, internally threaded nipple 36 which is removably threaded on the upper end of the tip or generator pipe extension 30. The part 34 is also provided on its upper side with an internally threaded nipple 37 to which is xed a pipe 3S Ithat conducts the mixed vapor and air to the upper portion of the mixing chainber. .From thenceit passes down around t'iie pipe 3S and part 34 to the burner head 33. An open-ended sleeve4 mantle 39 is adapted to be secured at its lower enclin a groove -formed in the lowerportion of the generator pipe extension 30, and, at its upper end, it is secured to the burner head 33.
A valve rod 40 extends through the generator pipe 29 and its extension or tip 30 end with a valve 41 and with a pin or needle 42 for controlling the flow through the discharge oriice 31 and for cleaning the same. rThe lower lend or the valve Vrod is provided with a` disk 48 arrangedwithin the enlarged bore at the Y upper end of the bushing or valve casing 6.

As shown, this socket c`o`m 'municates with the small bore 11 ot the valve casing 6 and forms part of the fuel passageway through the valve casing. A pinion 46 engages the teeth of the rack bar 44 and is provided with an operating stein 47. The pinion is arranged within a transverse bore :termed therefor in the bushing 6, and the outer end of this bore ,is enlarged to form a stuiiing box 48. l. In a vapor lamp, the combination of a fuel supply tank adapted to contain fuel under pressure, a bushing removably mounted on said tank, a fuel supply pipe secured within said bushing and depending within said tank, a coupling removably threaded in the upper end of said bushing, a vertical generator' pipe secured at its lower end to said coupling and having a discharge orifice at its upper end, said bushing having a passage way therethrough communicating with said supply and generator pipes, a valve rod arranged in said pipe and in the upper portion of said bushing and having a valve and cleaning pin for said orifiee,said valve rod being removable from said bushing and said pipe when said parts are disconnected, and a rotatable stem mounted in said bushing and provided with means for shifting said valve rod and a needle valve mounted in said bushing below said stem for controlling the passage through said bushing, substantially as described.
2. In a vapor lamp the combination of a fuel supply tank adapted to contain fuel under pressure, a bushing removably mounted on said tank and having a passage way therethrough, a fuel supply pipe secured to said bushing and depending within said tank, a coupling removably threaded on the upper end of said bushing, packing interposed between said tank and said bushing and between the latter and said coupling, a vertical generator pipe secured at its lower end to said coupling and having a discharge orifice at its upper end, a cap nut mounted on said generator pipe and an insulating handle surrounding said generator pipe and held in place between said coupling and said cap nut, substantially as described.
3. In a vapor lamp, the combination with generator pipe, a coupling secured thereto, a sleeve on said pipe, the latter having an integral shoulder against which said sleeve abuts, a cap nut threaded on said sleeve, and an insulating handle surrounding said pipe and interposed between said coupling and said cap nut, substantially as described.
4. In a vapor lamp, the combination of a supply tank, a bushing having a. passageway therethrough secured to said tank, a coupling removably threaded on said bushing, a vertical generator pipe secured at its lower end to said coupling, a sleeve on said generator pipe, the latter having an integral shoulder against which said sleeve abuts, a cap nut threaded on said sleeve, and an 1nsulating handle surrounding said generator pipe and interposed between said coupling and said cap nut, substantially as described.
5. In a vapor lamp, the combination with a bushing having a passageway there through, a generator pipe connected to said bushing at one end and having a discharge orifice at its outer end, a valve rod in said pipe having a valve and cleaning pin for said orifice, a rack eccentrically mounted on said valve rod and arranged in said bushing, a stem extending into said bushing in line with the axis thereof, and a pinion on said stem engaging said rack bar, substantially as described.
