- GLIDER FOR FURNITURE-LEGS.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLPH BALLENBERG, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gliders for F urniture-Legs, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to gliders for the legs of furniture and other heavy articles, and particularly to what are known-gas metallic and hollow legs, and the object thereof is to provide an improved glider or gliders of this class which may serveas gliders only, or be quickly and easilychanged to serve as a support or supports for casters; and with this and other objects in View the invention consists in a device or devices'of the class" specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accom-v panying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a corner view in elevation of the bottom of the leg of an article of furniture provided with my improvement;

In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a the bottom part of a leg of a heavy article of furniture or other article composed of angle iron, said leg being angular, or approximately so, in.

The double score lines o in the angle of; the part b of the blank are for the pur ose of forming transverse heads 7) at the ase of the triangular spring clamp members 6 and the object of which is to reinforce said clamp members and give them greater'spring action and make them more efficient in use.
\Vhen constructed in this manner my im proved gliding attachment may be connected with the leg by simply forcing it upwardly into the bottom thereof in-which operation the top member I) enters the leg, and said clamp members I) and the top portion I) securely clamp and'hold the attachment to the leg.
The central part b of the blank which forms the bottom 5 of the attachment is provided with a semi-circular, or approximately semi-circular depression I) which forms the bearing or glider proper of the attachment and which operates in the same manner as other devices of this class.
It must be understood that my invention is not limited to a leg of the form in cross section herein shown and described but may be applied to any metallic hollow leg either cylindrical, square or octagonal in cross section, all that is necessary being 1. that the said attachment be so formed as 100. to be capable of being forced upwardly into or onto the leg and be provided with spring clamp devices which hold it in connection therewith.
In Fig. (i, l' have shown my improved attachment used for the purposeof securing a caster c to the log (I, and the attachment in this case is made from ihe blank shown in Fig. 7, and this blank differs from the blank shown in Fig. 5 only in that the triangular side extension b of the body portion b of said blank is provided with an aperture 6 throt gh which the pintle of the caster passes. In this form of construction, the bottom bearing member I)" formed by the depression 0 in the bottom of the attachment is pierced as shown at I) to form an aperture through which the pintle is also passed, and all that is necessary is to pass the pintle of the caster up through the apertures b and b and rivet the head of the pintle as shown at c, and with this construction the glider bearing b" forms a hearing which rests on the central top portion a of the yoke of the caster and rotates thereon in the operation of moving the'article of furniture or other article from one point to another, and to facilitate this operation the outer edge portion of the aperturel is rounded as shown at I), and my improved gliding attachment may in this Way be made to serve as a safe and secure attachment for acaster and one which may be quickly and easily applied and which is held in place by spring clamp devices only,'and in which the caster, or its pintle 0 is free to rotate with a minimum amount of friction and may also serve as a glider, if desired, the rounding edges 6 of the aperture I) permitting the attachment to move freely over the floor.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r 1. A gliding attachment for an angular leg of an article of furniture, said attachment being formed from sheet metal and consisting of a bottom plate approximately triangular in form and provided at one side edge with an upwardly directed plate having I a top portion which fits in the angle of the leg and at the other side edge portions thereof with upwardly directed spring clamping members which engage the outer surfaces of side port'iiins of the leg and whicli'are provided at the bottom thereof with outwairdly directed transverse bonds or beads, said bottom plate being also provided with a central'convex bearing.
2. A gliding attachment for use in connection with an angular support, said attachment being formed from sheet metal and consisting oi a bottom plate on which the support rests, and a back plate extending upwardly from the bottom plate and being provided with a top plate which fits v transversely in the angle of the support, said bottom plate being provided with upwardly directed spring clamp members which engage the outer surface of the sides of the. support, and said bottom plate being also provided with a convex bearing member.
3. A device of the class described adapted v to be used'in connection with an angular support, said device being formed from sheet metal and consisting of a bottom plate on which the support rests, a back plate and a top plate, said bottom plate being also provided with upwardly directed spring clamping members which engage the outer surfaces of the sides of the support, the bottom plate being provided with a convex bearing member and said top and bottom plates being provided with apertures.
