Be it known that I, HENRY DREsEs, a citizen of the United States residing at Cincinnati,in the county of of Ohiohave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drilling-Machines, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to that class of metal drilling machines employing an arm for supporting the drill-head, power means for rais' and lowering the arm, and means for clamplng the arm in adjusted positions.
In drilling machines of this character, it is a practice to clamp the drill-arm in adjustedpositions,'the drill-arm being arranged to be unclamped when it is desired to raise or lower the drill-arm on its column, movement of the drill-arm being imparted by suitable power-propelled means for. effecting the raising or lowering of the drill-arm when such raising or lowering is desired. If, however, the operator is careless and does not unclamp the drill-arm prior to the movement of the drill-armfby such ower-driven means, excessive wear and brea age of parts results from the power-application to the` drill-arm While clamped to the column.
It is 'the object of my invention to provide means whereby to so connect the clamping means for the drill-arm and the power means for raising and lowering the drillarm as to render the during clamped lrelatlon of the drill-arm; further to provide means whereby the ower means are locked in inactive relation y the clamping movement of the drill-arm clamp;
` and further to provide means, 'moving up and down with the drill-arm, having continuous connection with the power means,
and movement arresting means forthe lat ter on the drill-arm clamping means.
The invention will be further readily understood from the following description and claims, and from the drawings, in which latter: Y

15 represents a usual column of a drilling machine. 16 is a drill-arm arranged to support a suitable drill-head 17, on which there 1s a drill-spindle 18 for containing a usual drill 19. Suitable means are provided for adjustingthe drill-head laterally on ideways 20 on the drill-arm, which may e accomplished by hand or by power, as may be desired.
The drill-arm is arranged to be adjusted up and down' on the column, and is instanced as havinl a clamp-bearing 21 about the column for t e purpose of clamping the drill-arm in adjusted positions.
The column may, if desired, be rotatabley about its longitudinal axis on an annular guide 22 on the base 23 of the machine about a post 24, for the lpurpose of positioning thedrill-arm in suita le angular positions with relation to the post. The lower part of the column forms a bearing split at 26, and clamped'inadjusted p0s1- tions by means of a clamp 27, similar to the clamp for the bearing ofthe drill-arm hereinafter described.
The drill-arm is arranged to be adjusted '25,about the post,
up and down on the column, accomplished by means of a screw-shaft'30, having threaded connection with a threaded bearing 31 on the drill-arm, and journaled in a bearing 3 2 of the column and in asleeve 33 fixed inV a bearing. 34 of the top 35 of the column, preferably fixed to the column.
Suitable means are provided for rotating the screw-shaft in opposite directions, accomplished in thev present exemplication by providing the screw-shaft with a gear 36 fast thereon. An upright shaft 37 is journaled in the column in a bearing 38 fast with the post 27, a bearing 39 at the upper end of the post, and a bearing 40 in the top 35, the latter bearing having a bearing 41 in the post for guiding the top of the column.
Gears 42 and 43 are fast at the upper end of the shaft 37. The gear 43 meshes with a gear 44 journaled about a stud-shaft 45 ixed in a bearing 46 in the top of the column. A gear 47 is fast with the gear 44.
A quadrant-plate 51 is pivoted about the sleeve 33, about the axis of rotation of the screw-shaft. Pinions 54, 55, mesh with each other and are respectively ournaled on studs 56, 57 fixed to the quadrant-plate 51, the pinion 55 being in mesh with the gear 36. The quadrant-plate is arranged to swing about its pivotal axis for causing the pinion 54 to mesh either with the gear 42 at the upper end of the upright shaft 37 or with the gear 47, the said gears 42 and 47 continuously rotating in opposite directions and thereby transmitting opposite directions of rotation to the screw-shaft 30, when the pinion 54 is placed in mesh with said respective gears.
fllhe gear 44 is in train with a gear 58 fast at the upper end of a shaft 59, which has a bevel-pinion 60 splined thereto, arranged to move with the up and downlnovements of the drill-arm, for transmitting motion to the usual drive-shaft extending lengthwise of the drill-arm for rotating and feeding the drill.
A rock-shaft 63 is journaled in a bearing 64 in the column and in a bearing 65 in the top 34. lt is provided with an arm 66 fast thereon, articulated at 67 with a link 68 having articulation at 69 with the quadrantplate 51. An operating arm 71 is fast on the rock-shaft 63, and has a latch 72v pivoted thereon at 73, spring-pressed by a spring 74 into action with a notch 75 on the column, for maintaining the quadrant-plate in neutral position when the latch is in the notch, in which position the screw-shaft is inactive.
As hereinbefore stated, the drill-arm has a bearing 21 about the column, this bearing being a clamp-bearing. It is exemplified as provided with a plurality of incisions 76, 76 although it is obvious that the bearing, ii desired, may be split throughout its length. Clamping means are provided for the bearing. l have exemplified a plurality of these clamping means. One or more may be employed Within the spirit of my invention. As exemplified, each of the clamping means consists of a clamp-screw 78, received through lugs 7 9, 80, at the respective sides o the incision in the clamp-bearing. rThe clamp-screw is exemplified as comprising a head 8l in which there are holes 82 for receiving a suitable Spanner-Wrench or key for turning the clamp-screw. The clamp-screw is arranged to be rotated in its bearing 86 in the lug 79 and to be secured in adjusted positions by means of the set-Soren1 87. rThe mamas@ clamp-screw passes through its bearing 88 in the lug 80.
clamp-nut 90 is received about the threaded end 83 of the clamp-screw, and is exempliied as having an operating arm 91 thereon.
A 'washer 92 is interposed between the clamp-nut and the bearing 88, the washer being exemplified as a pluri-part washer comprising the parts 93, 94, having a ballbearing 95 between them', the coacting faces between the washer and the bearing 88 being rounded, as she Nn at 96, so as to insure iirm clamping contact between the clampnut 90 and the washer 92 and between the washer 92 and the bearing 88 over a substantial area, irrespective of the clamping relation of the clamp-bearing of the drillarm, and to compensate for variations in parallelism between the axial lines of the earings 86 and 88 which take place during the clamping of the drill-arm bearing, and the variations there may be between said axial lines after Wear has taken place between the clamp-bearing of the drill-arm and the column, the bearing 88 having suficient clearance, indicated at 97, with the clamp-screw 78 for permitting such slight variations as there may be in parallelism between the axial lines o said bearings 86 and 88, and the ball-bearing insuring ease of` operation under great clamping strains.
If wear has taken place in the drill-arm bearing the clamp-screw 7 8 may be turned and clamped in new relation by the setscrew 87, so that the operating arm 91 will at all times extend in substantially the same direction when the drill-arm bearing is clamped for proper co-action of the locking means for the power-moving means for the screw-shaft 30 hereinafter described.
ln order to prevent the clamp-bearings from separating beyond the desired distance for permitting movement of the drill-arm, l provide a limiting bolt 98 which passes through a bearing 99 in the lug 79 and is threaded in a threaded bearing 100 in the lug 80.

Means are provided for connecting the operating means for the screw-shaft 3() and the clamping means 'for the drill-arm bearing, in order to insure release of the clamping means for the drill-arm bearing prior to actuation of the screw-shaft, for preventing excessive wear, damage and breakage of the parts.
It has frequently happened, for instance, in prior constructions, that the teeth of the gears operating the screw-shaft have been stripped when the power was applied for rotating the screw-shaft while the clamp was in clamped relation.
In the present exemplification of my invention, I provide a lock 110 between the operating arm 91 and the rock-shaft 63, comprising, for instance. a pin 111 on the operating arm, coacting with a slot 112 in a collar 113, rockable with the rock-shaft and exemplified as having spline-connection 114 therewith. The collar is arranged to move lengthwise of the rock-shaft with the adjustments of the drill-arm, accomplished, for instance, by providing the collar with a oove 115 in which a bracket 116 secured to the drill-arm bearing is received. When the drill-arm bearing moves up or down, the collar is moved up and down with the drill-arm bearing by the bracket 116, for maintaining the operative relation between the pin 111 and the collar.
lVhile the pin 111 is in the slot 112, as exemplified in Figs. 7 and 8, rocking of the rock-shaft 63 is prevented, making it necessary for the operator to first operate the operating arm 91 for unclamping the clampscrew or clamp-screws 78, and thereby releasing the clamped relation of the drillarm bearing about the column, before -rotation of the screw-shaft for moving the drillarm up or down is possible, thereby preventing harmful results from carelessness or thoughtlessness on the part of the operator and insuring releasing of the drill-arm bearing prior to its axial movement.
On the other hand, return of the operating arm for the clamp to clamped relation prior to release of the power means of the raising and lowering screw-shaft, will be prevented, because the slot 112 is out of registry with the pin 111 while the rockshaft 63 is in any other than neutral position, the said slot being in registry position with relation to the pin only when the latch 72 is in registry with its notch 75, the lugs 117 on the collar 113 being in obstructing relation with the pin when the latch is out of registry with its notch within the limits of movement of the rock-shaft 63.
The groove 112 is preferably described on an arc having the pivotal axis of the arm 91 carrying the pin 111 as its center.
The locking means 110 as well as the rockshaft and screw-shaft move coincidently with the drill-arm when the drillarm is adjusted to different angular positions.
Having thus fully described my invention1 what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a. metal drilling machine, the combination with a column and a drill-arm, of means comprising a rock-shaft for adjusting said drill-arm to height on said coliunn. and means for clamping said drillarm in adjusted positions to said column, said first-named means having lock-connection with said second-named means comprising a collar on said rock-shaft, means for shifting said collar with said drill-arm lengthwise on said rock-shaft, and locking means coacting withsaid collar, said lockconnection releasable by manipulation of said second-named means.
2. In a metal drilling machine, the combination with a column and a drill-arm, of adjusting means adjusting said drill arm to height on said column, clamping means clamping said drill-arm in adjusted positions to said column, and locking means for locking said adjusting means in inactive relation operatively disposed between said adjusting means and said clamping means comprising a locking collar having operative connection with said adjusting means and adjustable to height with said drill-arm, and a coacting locking and unlocking part therefor controlled by said clamping means, and constructed and arranged for placing said locking means in locked relation by clamping movement of said clamping means and in unlocked relation by unclamping movement of saidclamping means.

In a metal drilling machine, the combination with a column and a drill-arm, of adjusting means adjusting said drill-arm to height on said column comprising a train of gearing including a movable member movable for active or inactive relation in said train of gearing, a rock-shaft for moving said movable member, clamping means for clamping said drill-arm to said column in adjusted positions, said clamping means comprising an arm, a collar rotatable with said rock-shaft, and slot and pin connection between said clamping arm and said collar arranged for coactive relation during clamped relation of said clamping means and for release during unclamping relation of said clamping means.

In a metal drilling machine, the combination of a column, a drill-arm comprising a split-bearing about said column, means for raising and lowering said bearing axiallj7 on said column, and clamping means for clamping said bearing to said column in adjusted positions comprising a clampscrew and a nut therefor, constituting a pair of clamping members, bearings at the respective sides of the split in said bearing for said clamp-screw, and a pluri-part washer between one of said clamping members and one of said clamp-screw bearings comprising a ball-bearing between the parts of said washer, said washer and said one of said clamp-screw bearings having rounded contact faces between them providing coact-` ing abutting :faces of extended area irrespective of the parallelism of the axial lines of said clamp-screw bearings.
5. ln a metal drilling machine, the conibination of a column, a base, a drill-arm on said column swingable so as to project in different directions laterally over said base, adjusting means comprising a rockshaft parallel with said column for adjusting said drill-arm to height on said column, clamping means clamping said drill-arm in adjusted positions to said column, and locking means locking said adjusting means and said clamping means together during maintenance of clamped relation of said clamping means, said locking means comprising a collar having operative connection with said rock-shaft to rotate therewith and move longitudinally thereof, and a coacting locking and unlocking part having operative connection With said clamping means, said locking means swinging and movable up and down with said drill arm.
6. In a metal drilling machine, the combination of a column, a drill-arm comprismacias@ ing a clamp-ring about said col adjusting means adjusting said clamp-bearing to height on said column, a plurality of spaced-apart clamp-screws clamping said clamp-bearing in adjusted positions to said Y column, said clamp-screws provided with operating arms, a link articulated to said operating arms for connecting the same for combined movements, said adjusting means comprising a rock-shaft extending length- Wise of said column, a collar rotatively connected with said rock-shaft and movable lengthwise thereof with the movements to height of said clamp-bearing, one of said operating arms and said collar provided with slot and pin rconnection locking said rock-shaft against rotation during clamped relation of said clamp-screws.
