Be it known that I, JOHN O. BENEKE, a. citizen of-the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans'and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Burglar-Alarm;
and I do hereby declare the following to be r a full, clear, and exact description of'the invention, such as will-enable others skilled which it appertains to make and use thesame.
The purpose of this invention is to provide an improved burglar alarm'which may be applied to a door lmobor window sash, designed to produce an audible warning when an attempt is made to open'a door'or window.
The arrangement :is such that the movement of the door or window will tilt or swing the device thereby causing a movable actuating element to engage one of-a plurality of trigger levers, which releases the alarm, and to repeat the warning for each oscillation ofthe device.
While an embodiment-of the invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, it is to be understood that the construction therein shown is for the purposes of illustration only, andnot-as defining'the limits of r the invention.

In the construction illustrated in Fig. 1, the device is adapted for employment in connection with a door wherein the base 1 is suspendedfrom the knob or arotating device secured to a door, by means of the clamps indicated at 2. Any suitable form of clamp maybe employed which will cause the base 1 to move fro-ma vertical position to an inclined position. It is obvious that any other means of mounting the structure upon a door may-be employed to elfect the swinging action of the device when the door is moved from its closed position. The base is preferably provided with an arcuate flange 3 near the lower end thereof, and servesto mount a train of gears which are actuated by tl1e=resilient element indicated at 4. One form of signal device is disclosed by the bell 5 'which'covers a plurality of gears, A master gear'6 is connected with a spur gear 7, which'serves to transmit motion to a tripgear 8 which has a revoluble element in the form of a band 9 having notches 10 formed on the periphery thereof. Any preferred form of notches may be formed on the band 9. Suitably geared with the master gear 6 is an escapement wheel indicated at 11, cooperating with which is a verge 12 having a bell clapper 13 connected thereto andin positionto strike the bell 5.
An important feature of the invention resides in the provision-of a pivoted trip 14 which is positioned adjacent to the band Wheel 9. Thistrip 14 is provided with a detent 15 which isadapted to engage the notches'of the band wheel 9 and to retain the'gearS from movement except when the trip 14 has been moved to a disengaging position. The-trip 14 is pivoted at 16 and is maintained'in engagement with the band wheel 9 by any suitable means, such as a leaf spring 17. Suitable means are employed to move the trip 14 to its releasing position.
One manner'of accomplishing this function isillustrated as aplurality of trigger levers '18, 19. The'lever -18'is shown pivoted at 20 and is provided with an inturned upper end 21 which is adapted to engage the upper end of the trip 14 and tomove the lower end thereof which carries the detent 15 out of engagement with the band wheel 9, when the lower end 22 of the lever 18 is moved in an outward direction. This lower end is preferably curved inwardly toward theocenter of the base plate, and in like manner the lower endof lever 19 is shown curved inwardly toward the center of said baseplate. The lever-19 is pivoted at 24, and is shown shorter than the lever 18. To eliminate the necessity of employing a plurality of trip devices 14, there is provided means whereby lever 19 may actuate the trip 14. Such means isillustrated as a slidable rod'25 suitably mounted in a retaining block 26, one end of said rod being in position to be engaged by the upper end 27 of the lever 19 to move the rod against the lower end of the trip 14, and thereby release the detent 15 from engagement with the band Wheel when the end 23 of the lever 19 is moved in an outward direction- In the preferred form of the invention the levers 18, 19 may be actuated by a freely movable gravity element which is positioned between the levers 18 and 19, and which may rest upon the arcuate flange 3. When the device is suspended in a vertical position, this weighted gravity device 28 is adapted to rest upon the flange 3 between said levers 18 and 19. Should the door knob be turned, and the base moved to an inclined position, the weighted element 28 will be moved into contact with either lever 18 or lever 19 at the lower ends 22 or 23 thereof, and thereby operated to move said levers sufficiently to release the trip 14 from engagement with the band wheel, permitting the train of gears, under the impulse of the resilient element 4:, to actuate the verge 12 and sound the alarm.
If desired, the weighted element 28'may be in the form of a pendulum andsuspended by a suitable means such as 29 from the supporting plate 30 for the master gear 6, and the arcuate flange 3 omitted from the device.- 7
When the device is adapted for attachment to a window casing, the base plate 1 may be provided with a transverse plate 31 having slots 32 formed therein to permit the transverse plate 31, which is shown of greater length than the width of the plate 1, to extend beyond the edges of the base plate 1. This transverse plate 31 may be secured to the base plate by any suitable means, such as the studs 33. The device may be suspended by a suitable'hanger, in
dicated at 3 1 as a plate suitably mounted on the base plate and provided with a slotted upper end 35. In attaching the device to a window, the base is suspended from the window casingby means of the plate. 34:, and the transverse plate 31 is moved beyond the edge of the plate 1 toward the window. sash. The'sash should then be provided with a stop, whichm'ay be a screw. or nail indicated at 36, whereby when the sash is raised, the stop 36 will engage the transverse plate 31 causing the device to be moved. to an inclined position which operates to cause the weighted element 28 to strike one of the levers 18 or 19, thereby releasing the trip and sounding the alarm.
It will be noted that the band wheel. 9 permits the alarm to be sounded intermittently should the device be swung from one inclined position to the vertical and thence r to the opposite inclined position, or moved.

When shipping the device the weighted supporting element is preferably secured to the base by inserting a suitable fastening element, such as a pin or nail, through a perforation 37 in the weight, and a corresponding perforation in the base plate. This precaution will prevent the weighted member 28 from injuring the train of gears or destroying the operation of trigger levers 18 and 19. The mechanism is adapted to be covered by a suitable plate to protect the working parts from injury. 7 a
It is obvious that various changes in the form and proportion of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of. the invention, and the right is reserved to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: r a
1. In an alarm device for door knobs and the like, means to secure the devicefor rotative movement simultaneously with its supporting element, a signal, rotatable means to sound the signal, a lever serving asa trip to control the signal, a plurality of oppositely positioned levers to actuate the trip, and a freely movable element interposed between the trip actuating levers to alternately engage said levers for releasing the trip when the supporting element has been moved from a predetermined position. Inan alarm device for door knobs and the like, means to support the alarm device from a rotatable element, such as a door knob, a signal, rotatable means to sound the signal, a trip adapted to control said rotatable means, a plurality of levers arranged in spaced relation to actuate said trip, and a movable weighted disk interposed between said trip levers to alternately engage one or the other of said levers when the alarm supporting device is moved from a predetermined position to release said trip and the signal actuating means. 3. In a device of the class described, a
base having an arcuate flange, a trip mounted on the base and operating to control a signal, a plurality of levers arranged to actuate said trip, and a freely movable element on said arcuateflange positioned between said trip levers to engage one or the other of said levers to release the trip when the base is moved from a predetermined position.
4:, In a device of the class described, a base having a signal device mounted thereon and a trip to control said signal device,
vaplurality of spaced levers arranged to actuate said trip, and a weighted element positioned betweensaid levers for oscillatory movement and adapted to, engage one or the other of said levers to release the trip and actuate the alarm when the base is moved from a predetermined position.
5. In a device of the class described, a base having a revoluble element to actuate a signal, a trip to engage means on said revoluble element, whereby the signal may be operated intermittently, a plurality of trip levers arranged in substantially parallel relation and a movable element interposed between said trip levers to engage one or the other of said levers to release the trip from engagement with the revoluble element.
6. In a device of the class described, a base having a signal device mounted thereon, a revoluble element to actuate a signal, a trip to engage means on the revoluble element whereby the signal may be intermittently operated, a plurality of spaced levers arranged to actuate said trip, means whereby said levers may alternately move the trip to its released position, and a gravity element positioned between said levers to alternately engage said levers when the base is moved from a predetermined position.
7. In a device of the class described, a base having means to secure the same to a movable object, a signal device mounted on the base, a trip to control the signal device,

8. In a device of the class described, a base having means to secure the same to a movable object, a signal device mounted on the base, gear elements to operate said signal device, a notched band wheel adapted to revolve simultaneously with one of said gear elements, a trip having means to engage a notch of said band wheel to control the operation of said signal, a plurality of trip levers, one of which is adapted to engage the trip, a slidable rod extending from the other lever to engage the trip, and a gravity element capable of oscillating movement adapted to alternately actuate one or the other of said trip levers to release said trip from the band wheel when the base is moved from a predetermined position.
