SPRING-MOTOR FOR MECHANICAL TOYS.
Application filed July 22, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY T. KINesBURr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keene, in the county of Cheshire, State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Motors for Mechanical Toys, of which the followstructure and combination of parts hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings Figure l is a top plan view of the bottom plate of the motor case showing the axle mounted thereon and showing the pawl and ratchet arrangement.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on a line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the spring holding shaft, ratchet and winding memher in their disassembled relation.
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of the bottom plate of the housing, showing the relative position of the ratchet and pawl.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
1 represents the bottom plate .of the spring housing and which has securedon the edge the downwardly extending ears 2 which are slightly out of radial alinement and in Which is mounted the axle 3 carry- The plate 1 is bulged downwardly at the center and provided with the slots 6 and 7 and through which extends the axle 3 whereby it is brought above the plate. The slot 6 is of considerable width to allow for the pinion 8 to be keyed to the axle and by means of which the axle is driven as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The axle, as heretofore described, is driven by the pinion 8 and the wheel 4 is keyed to the axle while the wheel is loose thereon so that only one wheel is driven to Specification of Letters Patent.

The plate 1 is provided with a central opening 9 through which extends the cylindrical shaft 10 which has its lower end cutaway at 11 and which passes through the rectangular opening 12 in the pawl 13, which rests flat upon the upper face of the plate 1. The cars 14. and 15, formed by the cut-away portion, pass through the rectangular openings 16 and 17 in the winding member 18 and are turned upwardly against the lower face thereof whereby the shaft is rotatably mounted in the opening in the plate 1 and is held against vertical movement. The plate 1 around the central opening is provided with a series of openings 19 having the metal at one side thereof struck up to .form ratchet teeth 20 and against which the pawl 13 bears and is prevented from rotating in one direction, yet is free to spring upwardly over the inclined faces 21 of the struck up portion and to rotate in the opposite direction for winding the spring as will be hereinafter more fully described.
' Rotatably mounted upon the upper face of the plate 1 around the shaft 10 is a plate 22 which has a downwardly turned flange 23 provided with teeth 24-. meshing with the pinion 8 and whereby the axle 3 is rotated. The plate 22 has struck-up portions 25 adjacent its edge which serve as a guide for the spring 26 and the end of the spring is secured to one of said portions 25 as indicated at 27. The shaft 10 as heretofore de scribed is of a hollow form and has a slot 28 therein, through which passes the opposite end of the spring 26 and said end is rolled as indicated at 29 so that it can not pass out of the slot 28.
Secured to the plate 1 by the lugs 30 is an inverted saucer-shaped housing 31 which has a central opening 32 forming a bearing for the shaft 10. The upper face of the housing 31 has secured thereto the plate 33 which has the upwardly extending portion 34 by means of which the motor and its supporting wheels are secured to the frame of the toy vehicle.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen by turning the member 18, the hollow shaft 10 is rotated, winding the spring 26 and when the member 18 is released the pawl 13 engages the ratchet teeth. 20 and the shaft held against rotation. The spring 26 then tends to rotate the plate 22 and through the medium of the teeth and pinion 8, the axle 8 is rotated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A motor of the character described, comprising a plate, means for supporting an axle, a shaft rotatably supported in said plate, a pawl carried by the shaft, ratchet teeth carried by the plate, a spring secured to the shaft, and having driving means for rotating said axle.
2. A motor of the character described, comprising a plate, an axle rotatably supported by said plate, a shaft rotatably supported on said plate at right angles to the axle, a pawl carried by the shaft and made of flat spring metal parallel with the plate, said plate having ratchet teeth formed therein, and a spring having one end secured to the shaft and the opposite end having driving means for rotating the axle.
3. A motor of the character described, comprising a plate, a wheel supporting axle rotatably mounted in said plate, a shaft rotatably supported in said plate, a spring metal pawl carried by the shaft, ratchet teeth carried by the plate, a spring having one end secured to said shaft, and means carried by the opposite end of the spring for rotating the axle.
4;. A motor of the character described, comprising a plate, a drive axle rotatably supported by the plate and parallel therewith, a shaft rotatably supported in the plate at right angles thereto, a spring metal pawl carried by the shaft, ratchet teeth carried by the plate, a spring having one end secured to said shaft and means carried by the opposite end of the spring for rotating said axle.
5. A motor of the character described, comprising a plate, an axle rotatably mounted thereon, a rotatable shaft supported by the plate, a spring metal pawl carried by the shaft, ratchet teeth struck up from the metal of the plate and engaging the pawl, and a spring secured to the shaft and having means for driving said axle.

A motor of the character described, comprising a plate having a saucer-shaped central portion, an axle extending through said central portion and rotatably mounted therein, a shaft rotatably supported in the center of said plate at right angles thereto, a spring metal flat pawl secured to the shaft above the plate, ratchet teeth struck up from the metal of said plate on opposite sides of the shaft, a turning member secured to the shaft below the plate, a spring having one end secured to the shaft, and means carried by the opposite end of the spring for rotating said axle.
7. A motor of the character described, comprising a plate, having a saucer shaped central portion, an axle extending through said central portion at one side of the center and rotatably supported thereby, a shaft rotatably supported in the center of said plate at right angles thereto, a spring metal flat pawl carried by the shaft on opposite sides thereof above the plate, ratchet teeth struck up from the plate in the path of travel of said pawl, means carried by the shaft below the plate whereby it can be rotated, and a spring secured to the shaft and having means for rotating said axle.
8. A motor of the character described, comprising a plate having a saucer-shaped central portion provided with slots at one side of the center, an axle extending through said slots and mounted in cars carried by the plate, shaft rotatably supported in the center of said plate at right angles thereto, a spring metal fiat pawl carried by the shaft on opposite sides thereof above the plate, ratchet teeth struck up from the metal of the plate and in the path of travel of the pawl, means carried by the shaft below the plate whereby it can be rotated, a pinion carried by the axle, a spring having one end secured to the shaft, a plate rotatably mounted on the shaft and having a downward turned toothed flange meshing with the pinion and having the other end of the spring secured thereto, a casing inclosing the spring and secured to the plate, and means carried by the casing for attaching it to a body.
9. A motor of the character described, comprising a plate, means for supporting an axle, a shaft supported in said plate, apawl carried by the shaft and made of spring metal, said pawl being parallel with the plate, said plate having ratchet teeth formed therein, and a spring having one end secured to the shaft and the opposite end having driving means for rotating the axle.
10. A motor of the character described, comprising a plate, an axle rotatably mounted in said plate, a shaft rotatably supported in said plate, a spring metal pawl carried by the shaft, ratchet teeth formed integral with the plate, and a spring having one end securedto said shaft and its opposite end secured to the plate.
