Description
FELIX L. SAINO, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
LOCKING DEVICE FOR FIRE DOORS AND SHUTTERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 5, 191'?.
rgnal application filed May 26, 1915, Serial No. 30,611.` VDivided and this application led July 7, 1916.
Serial No. 108,072.
To all whom t may concern: v i
Be it known that l, FELIX L. SAINO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, Shelby county, and State of Tennessee, have invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices for Fire Doors and Shutters, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to latches or locking devices for hre-proof doors or shutters, and consists in the* combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the accompanying claim.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a construction of latch for securely locking fire-proof doors or shutters in closed position along the entire closing edge thereof and to arrange the severa-l latches on the' door or shutter so that they may be operated simultaneously from one position by the hand and in an easily performed manner.
The invention disclosed herein forms a division of my copending application for United States patent, bearing Serial Number 30,611, and dated May 26, 1915.
The invention is shown by way of illus tration in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 represents a door or shutter equipped with the locking device, and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of one of the latches and partly in elevation.
Referring to the construction in detail, the lock, or latch, per se, consists of a plate 1, of substantially triangular design, and formed with integral angular portions 2 whose edges are undulated to fit closely against the corrugated surface of the wall 3 of the door or shutter, as shown in Fig. 2. The looking device, or latch, herein disclosed, is designed particularly for that type of door or shutter shown in my co-pending application for United States patent, Serial Number 32,948, and dated June 8, 1915.
The side flanges 2 are Constructed with ears or lugs 4 to receive the bolts 5 for fastening the device to the door or' shutter, and a. similar fastening means 6 passes through the plate 1 at the inner end thereof and is secured against the wall 3 as shown in Fig. 2. The plate 1 and side portions 2 form a housing that has mounted to operate therein the latch or locking bar 7 that is pivotally mounted on its inner end by the bolt 6; and the several bars 7 are connected to be operated together by the rod 8 which is pivotally attached to the several bars by the pins or bolts 9. The free ends 10 of the several latches are adapted to engage with suitable keepers alongside the window or door opening, or on similar devices carried by the adjacent door or shutter when the same are hung in pairs.
The housing is constructed with an integral lateral web portion 1st that connects the two lugs 4L and forms, with the plate, a slot along one side; and the apex opposite thereto is provided with a recess 17 in which the latch 10 is fulorumed on the pin or bolt 6. A pair of web members 15 and 18 are disposed transversely of the plate between said slot and recess, and form a space with in which the latch works.
The means for actuating the several bars consists of a lifting block 11 that is mounted on bolt 12 journaled in the housing, and said lifting block engages with the latch or bar 10 on either side of the bolt 12, after the manner shown in Fig. 1. A hand-operated lever or handle 13 for the lifting block, is secured to the bolt 12, for which purpose said bolt is squared and enters a similarly designed recess in said handle. It will be seen that, with this arrangement, the several latches or bars 10 may be operated simultaneously from the one position, and in an easily performed manner.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claim.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A lock for shutters or doors having a corrugated surface comprising a triangular shaped plate constructed along two sides with angularly projecting portions having corrugated edges to iit the corrugated surface of the door or shutter to form a housing therewith, one end of the triangular housing having a slot and the apex opposite thereto provided with a recess, a pair of parallel webs formed integrally with the plate and disposed transversely thereof between said slot and the recess, a latch fulcrumed on said plate Within said recess and In Witness whereof, have hereunto set 1 0 Working between said Webs and Within the my hand and seal at Memphis, Tennessee, slot, a bolt journaled in said plate, a lifting this 4th day of July, A. D. nineteen hundred blolk for the latch fulcumed on said bolt and sixteen.
5 Wit in the housing and aving contact With the latch thereat on either side of the bolt, FELIX L7 SAINO [1" S'] and a hand operated lever secured to the Witnesses: bolt for actuating said lifting block to raise JOHN W. FARLEY, the latch, substantially as set forth. P. P. H. MANGUM.
