CHARLES J. SOSS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD 'IO HENRY SOSS AND ONE-THIRD TO SAMUEL SOSS, BOTH OF NEW YORK, N. 'Y.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 27, 1916. Serial No. 139,113.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. Soss, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hinges and particularly to what are known as invisible hinges, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class in which the construction of the hinge, or one part thereof, is improved and simplified and the cost thereof reduced, while at the same time the hinge is made more strong and durable.
This improvement in hinges relates particularly to hinges of the class shown and described in U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,078,703 dated Nov. 18, 1913, No. 1,153,720 dated Sept. 14, 1915 and No. 1,208,037 granted to this applicant Dec. 12, 1916, and in which are shown and described hinges of the class specified particularly designed for use in connection with the doors of automobiles or power driven vehicles, but which may be used in connection with other kinds or classes of doors, and the invention described and claimed herein relates particularly to the hinge butt or member which is connected with, or used in connection with, the door or other swinging part, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 a front view of a complete hinge involving my invention, part of the construction being broken away and showing the separate parts of the hinge in an open position;
Fig. 2 a transverse sectioil on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 a. view similar to Fig. 2 but showing only a part of the construction;
Fig. 4 a view similar to Fig. 3 but showing a modification; and,
Fig. 5 a view of one of the plate or butt members of the hinge and showing a modification.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown in Fig. 1, a complete hinge of the class specified, involving my invention, and comprising in its construction two hinge butts or members a and b, and the butt or member a, in practice, is secured to the door frame and countersunk therein in the usual manner, while the butt or member Z) is secured to the door or other swinging device.
The hinge butt a, in the construction shown, comprises a central box portion a open at the front and provided with oppositely directed wing members a having screw-holes a through which are passed screws to secure said part of the hinge to a door frame of a stationary object.
The wing members a are provided centrally thereof with approximately semi-circular recesses a which open inwardly, and placed in the hinge butt or member a, or the boX- shaped portion thereof, is a U- shaped butt member 0 having oppositely directed wing portions 0 which fit in the recesses a and are secured therein by screws 0 which rigidly connect the parts a and a, and these parts constitute the complete hinge butt which, in practice, is secured to the door frame or stationary member.
The parts a and c which make up the hinge butt which is secured to the door frame or stationary member are the same as other hinges of this class, and shown in the patents hereinbefore referred to, and form no part of this invention.
The hinge butt or member Z), in the use of the hinge, is secured to the door or other swinging part and is composed of a plateshaped head 5 and an arm 6 comprising a central part 6 a part b at right angles to the part b and secured .to the plate-shaped head 6 and a part b" at an obtuse angle to the part b and which is pivoted at 79 to the U-shaped butt member 0.
All these parts in general form or design are similar to the corresponding construction shown in Patent N 0. 1,208,037 hereinbefore referred to, and the invention described herein consists in the specific form or construction of the part or arm 6 In forming the part or arm 6 I take a sheet of steel of suitable and predetermined length and bend it centrally to form a loop, ring or eye 12 through which the pivot pin (Z is passed, after which the end portions of said sheet are brought together and bent to form the part b of the arm 6 and then the part 6* of said arm, and then the part b, and the part b is provided with a shank b which is passed through an oblong rectangular slot or opening 6 in the plate or head member 79 and riveted therein, and this c0mpletes the hinge, or the preferred form thereof. a
Instead of providing the head plate or butt member 12 with a single slot or opening 6 and the arm 6 with a single shank I)", which is passed through and riveted in the part 6 said part b may be provided with a plurality of slots or openings as shown in Fig. 5, and the arm 19 with a corresponding number of shank members which are passed through and riveted in said part 6 Instead of forming the part 5 ashereinbefore described and as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5, said part b may be formed as shown in Fig. 4 in which the sheet of steel from which the part?) is formed'is madeshorter and one end thereof bent to form the ring, loop or eye 6 and the other end the shank or shanks b and with this construction the central and end portions 12, b and 6 consist but of a single part of said sheet, but I prefer the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, by reason of the fact that the arm with this construction is made stronger and less liable to yield, bend or break in use. p
In the construction herein shown and described, one side portion of the hinge butt or member a over which the hinge butt or member I) swings is cut out to form a longitudinal recess a which permits of the greater movement of the hinge butt or member b and greater movement of the door or other swinging part, but this feature of construction is immaterial and forms no part of this invention, and may or may not be employed. Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hinge butt or member comprising a plate-shaped head provided with an arm plate-shaped head and an arm comprising a central part at right angles to said head and having one end portion parallel with and flush with said head and secured centrally therein, and another end portion at an acute'angle to the central portion and provided at its end with an eye or loop, said arm being formed by bending a sheet of metal centrally to form said eye-or loop and then bringing the end portions of said sheet together and bending them successively to form the partsof said arm.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 23d day of December, 1916.
, CHARLES J. soss.
