CONTROL DEVICE FOR SPRING-MOTORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB Krnson, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hun ary, residing at Banner, in the county of Canadian and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Control Devices for Spring-Motors; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in spring motors and the principal object of the invention is to provide a spring motor having an automatic stopping means by which the same may be set to stop at a predetermined time.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel means for controlling the starting and stopping of the device manually.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a novel speed controlling means by which theyspeed of rotation of the power shaftemay be governed.
A further and more specific object of the invention is to provide a device having a drum provided with a spiral groove in which the stopping arm travels and provided with pins arranged for adjustment over its periphery so that the stopping may be effected at any time.
Withthese and other objects in View, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which-:
Figure 1 is a side view in elevation of the spring motor showing the speed governor and the manual starting and stopping device.
Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1 showing a portion thereof in section.
Fig. 3 is a View in elevation of one side of the device showing a portion broken away to more clearly illustrate the details of construction of the automatic stop.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional View through the motor, and
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the drum provided with the spiral groove.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the supporting standard of the device provided with a suitable foot 2 and this standard consists of a tubular member the upper portion of which is cut away as at 3 for a distance equal to substantially onehalf of the entire length of the standard to provide the upward extension a. The shoulder 5 formed by the joint of the cutaway portion with the standard is formed with the notch 6 for engagement with the side plate 7 of the motor frame. This side plate 7 is formed with an opening which is located substantially centrally for the reception of the bolt 8 which passes through an opening 9 in the extension 4 and is provided with a suitable nut by means of which the plate is attached and firmly held in place. The side is held in spaced parallel relation with the side plate 7 by the spacers 11 the ends of which are provided with threaded eXtensions for the reception of the nuts 12 by means of which the plates are firmly clamped in place. Journaled in the plates 7 and 10 are the shafts of the spring motor which may be of any preferred type which is connected through a gear train to the power shaft 13 which is journaled in the plates near their upper ends as clearly shown in the drawings. The forward end of the power shaft 13 is provided with a rectangular extension 1i for the reception of any suitable mechanism to be driven while the rear end of said shaft carries a pulley 15 over which the endless belt 16 passes and this belt extends around the friction pulley 17 mounted in thesupport 18 which is provided with a threaded stem 19 projecting through the bracket 20 secured to the rear plate and provided at its rear end with the nut 21 by means of which the eX- tension may be adjusted in the bracket. It will thus be seen that the support may be adjusted so that the tension of the belt 16 may be varied according to varying requirements.
Secured to the shaft of the gear driving the shaft 13' is a suitable detent wheel 22 which is provided with the notches or detents 23 in which the angular extension 24 of the control lever 25 is adapted to engage. This control lever 25 is provided near its lower end with a slot 26 through which the bolt 8 extends and it will thus be seen that the lever will be slidably mounted with relation to the standard and plate 7. In order to hold said lever in its desired position a suitable leaf spring 27 is mounted on said bolt and the ends of said spring bear against the lever 25 to force the same inwardly and plate 10 of the motor frame v against the plate 7 as clearly illustrated in the drawings. It will be apparent that when the lever 25 is in the position shown in Fig. 1 the finger 24: will be in engagement with one of the notches 23 so as to hold the wheel 22 against rotation thereby preventing operation of the motor. When it is desired to place the motor in operation however the finger 24; is moved out of engagement with the notch and the lever 25 moved downwardly on the bolt 8 thus lowering the finger and preventing engagement of the same with the periphery of the wheel.
In order to provide an automatic stopping mechanism for the motor the main drive shaft thereof which is designated by the numeral 27 is extended beyond the forward plate 10 of the frame and carries the pinion 28 which meshes with the gear 29 mounted on the shaft 30 which is journaled in the sub-frame 31 and the forward plate as clearly illustrated in the drawings. A suitable drum 32 is secured to the shaft 30 and is provided with a peripheral spiral groove 33 in which the spring stopping arm which will be more fully hereinafter described travels. Secured to the sub-frame and extending inwardly therefrom is a stud 34 having a transverse opening therethrough for the reception of the inner terminal of the volute spring 35 the outer end of which terminates in the spring arm 36. Suitable openings or recesses 37 are formed in the drum 32 at spaced intervals therearound and in the path of the spiral groove 33 and these openings are adapted to receive the stop pin 38 which engages the motor has run for a predetermined time and thus prevent further operation of the same. It will be understood that the pin 38 may be placed in any of the openings 37 and it will be seen that as the drum rotates the spiral groove will carry the arm 36 over until it is engaged by the pin 38.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use the spring motor is wound in the usual way and when it is desired to set the device in operation the pin 38 is moved to the proper opening in the drum 32 and the arm 36 is moved so as to rest in the end of the groove nearest the outer end of the drum. Upon moving the lever 25 so as to disengage the finger 24 from the notch 23 it Copies of this patent may be obtained for the arm 36 after will be seen that the motor will be free to rotate and thespeed of rotation may be governed by the tension on the belt 16. After the motor has run for a predetermined time it will be seen that the arm 36 will have traveled over in the groove 33 until it engages the pin 38 thus stopping the motor and preventing further operation thereof.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is 1. In a spring motor, a stopping means comprising a drum having a spiral groove therein, a stop pin removably secured to the drum and arranged to be positioned in the groove at various points and an arm adapted to travel in said groove and be engaged by the stop pin thereby stopping the rotation of the drum and the operation of the motor.
2. In a spring motor, a stopping means comprising a drum adapted to be driven by the drive shaft of said motor, said drum being provided with a spiral groove, a stop pin adapted to be secured to the drum in the path of the spiral groove, a stud attached to the frame of the motor, a volute spring secured to said stud and an arm on the spring adapted to travel in the groove and thereby intercept the path of the stop pin to cause the stopping of the motor.
3. In a spring motor, a manually operated controlling means for stopping and starting said motor comprising a notched disk secured to the driven shaft of said motor, a lever slidably mounted on the frame of the motor, a finger on the lever adapted to engage in the notches in the disk and means to hold said lever in operative or inoperative positions.
