Description

C. M. SAGER. SUPPORT FOR BUFFER BARS. APPLICATION FILED OCT. 25, ms.
Patented May 29, 1917.
r U m V m y H UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GLIN TON M. SAGER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO J. H. SAGER COMPANY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
SUPPORT FOR BUFFER-BARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 29, 191 '7.
Application filed October 25, 1916. Serial No. 127,654.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CLINTON M. SAGER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Bufier-Bars, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to supports for bufi'er bars used. on the front portions of motor vehicles and an object of the invention is to provide an improved support which may be readily attached to the curved forward end of a vehicle frame and may be adjusted so that the buffer bar lies horizontally.
To this and other ends, the invention con sists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view partially in section showing the support attached to the forward end of a vehicle; a
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the support in side elevation; and
Fig. 3- is a perspective view of the block used in the support.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the forward curved end of the vehicle frame and 2 the buffer bar, which may be of any suitable construction. The supporting means comprises preferably a supporting arm formed of an inner mem her 3 and an outer member 4, the latter being guided on the inner member and pressed outwardly by a helical spring 5 in any suitable manner. The inner end of this supporting arm may be enlarged at 6, and this enlarged portion has an out-curved toothed portion 7 and also a .transverse opening 8 which is preferably substantially concentric with the toothedportion 7 The toothed portion 7 bears against an incurved toothed portion 9 formed on a block 10, the inner face of the block being curved referably at 11 to conform to the curve 0 the forward end of the vehicle frame 1.
The supporting arm, with the block 10, is held in place on the vehicle frame by a U-shaped clip the connecting portion 12 of which passes loosely through the opening 8, While the arms 13 straddle the block 10 and the forward end 1 of the vehicle frame, and are anchored to a plate 14 on the under side of the curved end 1 by nuts 15. This plate 141 also carries a set screw 16 which bends against the under side of the front end 1 of the vehicle frame and prevents the slipping of the clip.
By this arrangement the block 10 may be shifted on the forward end 1 until its face 11 forms substantially firm contact with the upper face of the forward end 1 after which the supporting arm 34 is adjusted until it is horizontal. During this adjustment, the clip 12-13 is loosely held by the nuts 15 and when the desired adjustment is secured, the nuts 15 are turned to hold the parts in their adjusted positions. The clip 12-13 not only holds the parts in their adjusted positions but it prevents the sidewise movement of the block on the front end of the vehicle. Only one fastener is required to securely hold the support to the vehicle and this fastener serves as a pivot for the supporting arm during adjustment.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A support for buffer bars of automobiles, comprising a supporting arm having an end formed with a toothed outcurved portion and also withan opening substantially concentric with said toothed outcurved portion, a block having a face adapted to rest against the forward curved end of a vehicle frame and formed with a toothed incurved portion receiving the toothed outcurved portion of the supporting arm, and a U-shaped fastening clip passed through the opening of the supporting arm and having its arms lying upon opposite sides of the block to hold the latter against sidewise movement on the vehicle frame.
2. A support for bufi'er bars of automobiles comprising a supporting arm having an end formed with a toothed outcurved portion and also With an opening substalr arm, and a fastening clip passed through tiaiiy concentric with said toothed (mtourved the opening of the supporting arm and enportion, a block lmving a face mizipted to gaging the vehicle frame to hold the block rest against a vehicle frame and. formed to the frame and the supporting arm to the 10 5 with a toothed incurved portion receiving block.
the outcurved portion of the supporting CLINTON M" SAGER.
