Description

J. B. BAXTER.
BREAST STRAP SLIDE. APPLICATION F|LED DEC. 12. l9l6.
1 ,QZQ'YQD Patented May 29, 191.7.
UNITED sari-ire PATENT QFFIQEO JOHN BROWN BAXTER, OF WATERVLIE'I', NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO COVERT MANUFAC- TUB-ING- COMPANY,0F WATERVLIET, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW] YORK.
BREAST-STRAP SLIDE.
Application filed December 12, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN B. Bax'rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVatervliet, in the county, of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Breast- Strap Slides, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to breast strap slides and more particularly to breast strap slides having operatively associated therewith a snap hook or other attaching means.
In the art to which the invention relates, it has heretofore been suggested to provide combination breast strap slides and snaps, and while certain ofthese devices have gone into use, all of those with which I am familiar are open to various objections and have not proven entirely satisfactory or success ful, for the reason, among others that because of the peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, the strap is subject in its rubbing contact with adjacent parts of the device to become worn and is soon destroyed. Then again, in View of the strains on the various parts of the device, the latter have been found to be deficient, and either become broken or distorted which interferes with the free unrestricted relative move ment between the parts thereof.
By the present invention, it is proposed to overcome the above and other difficulties by the provision of a relatively inexpensive combination breast strap slide and snap which combines strength and durability", ease of operation, and appearance.-
In carrying out the invention, it is contemplated to provide a substantially continuous smooth wearing surface for the strap, and guiding means for the edges of the latter whereby appreciable lateral movement in the sliding action of the strap is obviated, and whereby the strap will not be brought in injurious rubbing contact with projections or roughened surfaces tending to destroy the same in use.
In order to obtain the best advantages it is desirable to provide between the breast strap slide and the snap attachment a pivotal connection, whereby these parts may freely swing relatively to one another, and one of the main features of the invention resides in a convenient, simple and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 29, 118d? Serial No. 138,563.
novel means of pivotal connection between these parts, whereby to overcome any unnecessary friction in the relative swinging movement, and whereby to strengthen or reinforce the parts from one another and thereby enabling the same to withstand without injurious effect any of the incidental strains on the device in operation.
More particularly, the invention includes a breast strap slide and a snap, the latter having supporting arms pivotally connected in a novel manner to the slide, whereby the slide constitutes a reinforce and guiding medium for said arms thereby relieving strains on the arms, supporting rivets and the like, and whereby said arms with the slide proper constitute a smooth engaging surface and guiding medium for the strap in any position of the latter.
While in the illustrative embodiment of the invention the means of attachment takes the form of a snap or snap hook, it is to be borne in mind that this feature of the construction may take various forms, and still be within the spirit and anticipation of the invention, and the terms snap or snap hook as used in the description and claims are not therefore to be construed in a limited sense, the invention more particularly re siding in the improved construction of strap slide and the means of connection between the attaching means, such as a snap, hook, eye or the like, therewith.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof, and wherein a preferred and satisfactory embodiment of the invention is disclosed for the purpose of illustration,
Figure 1 is a perspective view;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the breast strap slide showing the means of connection with the snap;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section; and Fig. l is a transverse section, parts being broken away and illustrating more particularly the connection between the slide and the attaching means.
With more particular reference to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 is a rounded or curved body portion of the breast strap slide, the latter connecting with sides 2, the under portions of, which sides are curved to corresides project above the upper portion of v, 8 of the hook.
the body part 1 at the center thereof, whereby to provide with the body part 1 a housing, guiding medium and reinforce for the connecting ends of the snap and securing rivet to be hereinafter referred to. The body part 1 connects with end loop parts comprising side arms 3 and end arms 1, the
loop portions curving upwardly from their point of connection with the body part 1, and the inner surface of the end arms itapering as illustrated to correspond with the curved under surface of the body part 1. The side arms 3 of the loop portions are relatively wide whereby to provide a smooth extended bearing for the edges of the strap to be applied to the slide. The body portion 1 is provided with cut-out or slotted parts, 5 between its points of connection with the sides 2, the inner edges of the slots 5 being in approximate alinement with the inner surfaces of the side arms 3 of the end loop members.
The securing means for the slide which may take the form of a snap hook, includes a hook portion proper 6, the latter at the bill thereof having suitable side flanges or lips 6 constituting guards adapted to overlie and receive thereloetween the end 7 of a substantially U-shaped spring held pivoted tongue 7, the opposite arms of which tongue are adapted to overlie the sides of the shank The shank 8 at its rear end connects with a cross bar or head 9 which latter at its ends connects with rearwardly projecting arms 10 which latter at the free terminals thereof have suitable apertured.
cars 11. The side arms 10 gradually widen toward their point of connection with the ears 11 whereby to provide an extended engaging surface for the edges of the strap as will more fully appear hereinafter. The ears 11 of the arms 10 are adapted to be positioned within the slotted portions 5 of the body part 1 and to register with apertures 5 in the sides 2 of the said body part. The retaining means for the snap preferably takes the form of a rivet or bolt 12 projecting through the apertures 5 of the body part and the apertured cars 11, the apertures in the cars 11 being of a diameter somewhat greater than the diameter of the rivet 12 whereby to permit of free swinging movement of the snap relative to the breast strap slide, which movement is limited by the length of the slots 5, the arms 10 being adapted to contact with that portion of the body part at opposite ends of the slots in the opposite swinging movements of the snap.
It will be observed that because of the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, the inner surface of the side arms 10 will be in approximate alinement with the inner surface of the side arms 3 of the loop portions of the breast strap slide.
The operation of the device may be reviewed as follows The breast strap is adapted to pass through the loops and engage the under curved surface of the slide, the. under surface of the strap having a smooth relatively wide bearing on the upper surface of the end bars 1 of the loop and the \upper surface of the strap having a smooth sliding engagement or hearing on the under surface of the said curved portion of the slide. The side arms 3 of the loop extensions of the slide constitute guides, and serve to maintain the strap in position against lateral displacement, and the side arms 10 of the snap also constitute guides cooperating with the side arms 3 just referred to, to form smooth engaging surfaces for the edges of the strap. These engaging surfaces provided by the arms 10 are extended because of the enlargement at the apertured terminals of said arms, and by reason of the fact that the arms 10 engage within the side walls 2 of the slide, the strap will be pre vented from working and riding on the edges of the slide, or other projections. As has been seen, the snap is free to swing about its pivotal support, the swinging movement being only restricted by the terminal walls of the slots 5, and in the relative movement of the parts, strains on the arms 10 and rivet 12 are resisted by the side walls of the slots 5 which are adapted to loosely engage opposite surfaces of the arms 10. The trough-shaped construction of the slide including the curved bottom 1 and sides 2 makes possible a substantial housing for the reception of the terminals of the arms 10 and securing rivet 12 which constitute substantially no obstruction beyond the upper surface of the side walls 2 of the slide, whereas the under surface of the slide in the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated is continuous and unbroken and free from projections.
