To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM C. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of h lultnoma-h and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved punch for use in connection with sheet metal and the principal object of the invention is to provide a punch having an improved jaw and also an improved type of plunger and actuating means connecting the plunger with the lever.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this punch that strain will. be re moved from the connecting pin for the various links connecting the lever with the penetrating plunger, thus permitting of a great deal of power without danger of breaking or bending when the punch is in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a punch which will comprise a comparatively few number of parts the parts being so connected that they may be taken apart when desired.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanyiug drawings, wherein Figure 1 a view in side elevation of the improved punch.

Fig. 6 is a view showing a slightly modiiied form of the punch, one of the links between the lever and penetrating plunger being omitted.
The head 10 of this vise is provided with the jaws 11 and 12 and with arms 13 extending above the aw 11. A handle 14 extends from this head and is positioned be neath the lever 15 which-has its head 16 pivotally mounted between the arms 13 by means of the bolt 17 which serves as a pivot pin. The plunger 18 is slidably mounted in a passageway formed in the jaw 11 and is provided with guiding pins 19 moving in grooves 20 to hold the plunger in the'proper position as the plunger moves vertically.
The outer end of this plunger is provided with a punch 21 which is to cut through the.
strip of sheet metal placed between the jaws 11 and 12upon the bushing or anvil 22 fitted in the jaw 12. It should be noted that this anvil extends above the face of the jaw 12 and therefore this anvil will receive wear instead of the jaw 12. This anvil is releasably held in place by the set screw 23 and therefore can be removed when desired. A link is 'pivotally connected with the plunger 18 by means of the guide pins 19 and is pivotally connected at its upper end with the links and 26 by means of the bolt 2'7 which. serves as a pivot pin. This link is pivotally mounted between the arms 13 by means of bolt 28 and the link 26 is pivotally connected with the head 16 of the lever 15 by means of the pin 29. It will thus be seen that when the lever 15 is swung upwardly to the position as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the link 26 will draw the links 25 and 24 inwardly and will draw the plunger 18 upwardly. The pins 19 will keep the plunger 18 from being moved out of a vertical position but will not prevent the usual movement of the plunger. As the lever is returned to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, the leverage together with the action of the links 25, 26 and 24 will force the plunger downwardly with a great deal of force and thus provide a very powerful punch with which relatively heavy sheet metal can be easily out.
In Fig. 6 there has been shown a punch which is very similar to the structure of the punch already disclosed. Therefore the same reference numerals have been used. It should be noted, however, that instead of having the head 16 of the lever pivotally mounted by means of a bolt 17 and connected with the links 25 and 24- by means of a link 26, the lever has been pivotally mounted by means of the bolt 28 and the lever directly connected with a link 24 which is somewhat longer than the link disclosed. in the previous figures. This head 16 is pivotally connected with the link 24 by means of the pin 27 and as the lever is swung from one position to the other, the plunger will be drawn out of an operative position and then forced back into an operative position. This punch will be used for lighter work and would be of lighter weight and therefore could be more easily carried about than the heavier punch shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
it will thus be seen that I have provided a punch which is so constructed that relatively heavy sheet metal can be easily cut and further that the punch is so constructed that the parts will be strong and durable and also that these parts are so constructed that they may be removed when necessary.
What is claimed is:
1. A punch comprising a head having up per and lower stationary jaws extending in spaced relation, the jaws being provided with passageways and the passageway of the upper jaw having an enlarged upper end portion, a handle extending from said head, arms extending from said head above said jaws, a plunger slidably carried by the upper jaw. a lever extending above said handle and having a head pivotally mounted between said arms, a link pivotally mounted between said arms in front of the head of said lever, a link pivotally connected. with the head of said lever, and a link pivotally connected with the upper end of said plunger and pivotally connected with said first and second mentioned links.
2. A punch comprising a head having up per and lower jaws positioned in spaced relation and provided. with alined openings, a handle extending from said head, a plunger slidably carried by the upper jaw, a guiding pin carried by said plunger and fitting into grooves formed in the upper jaw to guide the sliding movement of the plunger, a link pivotally connected with said plunger by said guiding pin, arms extending from said head, a link pivotally mounted between said arms, a lever extending above said handle and pivotally mounted between said arms, and a link pivotally connected with said lever, the link of said lever and the link mounted between said arms being pivotally connected with the link pivotally connected with said plunger.
