DISINFECTING-CABINET.
Specification of Letters I'atent.
- Patented May 29, 1917.
Application filed April 6, 1916. Serial No. 89,390.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PINCKNEY V. TUELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rosebud, in the county of Todd and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disinfecting-Cabinets, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined desk and cabinet for disinfecting purposes and has for its object the provlsion of a device of this character for use by surgeons, doctors, barbers, etc., for receiving the various' instruments or articles used by them in the discharge of their duties, and means whereby the same will be thoroughly disinfected or sterilized.
A further important characteristic of the invention resides in the novel manner in which the device is constructed, so that the same may be used for supporting books in a sterilizing compartment, also the provision of a desk and further, providing the desk structure with a plurality of drawers which are so constructed and arranged as to sterilize the various articles placed therein.
Other features of the invention consist of a disinfecting means, which are so arranged that the same may be employed at will by the user, also, the independently operated cut-offs or valves arranged at suit= able. points within the structure and which may be so adjusted as to regulate the flow of disinfectant to the various compartments.
A still further object of the invention, is to combine in a single piece of furniture, a desk, a book cabinet, a compartment for receiving towels or other various objects and havin arranged within the compartment a sliding or rolling shelf, and a desk attachment, the sides of the desk being provided with a plurality of sliding drawers for the pur ose as hereinafter stated and by so com ining these various units asto constitute a device in which the parts thereof are closely assembled, thereby taking up a minimum amount of space, and-rendering the same especially applicable for use in confined places.
'All of the foregoing together with additional advantageous details and arrangement of parts of the preferred embodiment of my invention will be clear from the specific description hereinafter contained when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part. thereof, wherein said embodiments of the invention are illustrated for the purpose of facilitating a full understanding of the present means.
In the drawings Figure 1 .illustrates a side elevation,
Fig. 2 is a transversesection taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line H of Fig. 3 showing the disinfectant receiving compartment and of one of the sterilizing compartments,
Fig. 5 is a detailed view of one of the drawers provided with a removable rack for supporting various articles in-spaced relation, and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view in detail of the gripping means for holding the disin- .75 fectant receiving curtain in its extended position.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings in connection with which like reference numerals will refer to the same parts in the several views, 1 designates a desk oughly disinfected, and with swinging doors 4 and 5 for closing the compartment. 6 is the lower rear compartment for receiving and sup orting towels or other linen by means 0 the slidable rack 7 supported and carried by the bars 8 and rollers 9, and by the sliding platform or carriage 10 having wheels 11 adapted to travel upon suitable tracks 12. 13 is a swinging doorsupplied with suitable hinges at one of its sides whereby access may be had to the compartment 6 for the purpose of removing or placing towels upon t e supporting means arran ed therein and also, to allow for the sliding of the rack and carriage upon-their respective supports. V
' rranged and supported on either side 105 of the desk 1 are a plurality of sliding drawers 14 supported by the framework 15,
19 is a central compartment formed by the partition walls 18, having supported therein by suitable bracket members 20 a spring wound curtain 21 which is provided with, upon one of its surfaces, an absorbent material for the purpose of receiving a disinfectant, and 22 are pivoted gripping members normally held in a closed position by a spring 23 of suitable construction, and means for pivotally supporting the same as shown at 24. By these gripping members the d sinfectant receiving curtain may be held in an extended position through the medium of a ring 25 which is received and held by the gripping members 22. 26 is a perforated shelf supported within the receptacle for,
receiving various articles.
In order that the central disinfectant receiving compartment may be placed in communication with each of the various receptacles or compartments as heretofore described I provide a series of ports 27 and 28, the ports 27 beingclosed by valve members 29 having screw-threaded stems 30 extendin from the same to a position beyond t e sides of the desk whereby the same may be operated for opening: or closing the ports. The port 28 is formed by a series of openings which are adapted to be closed by a sliding plate valve 30 having arranged thereina series of openings or perforations 31 which may be brought into register with the openings 30 whereby the port may be opened. Also, means are provided for operating the sliding plate valve, in the form of an elongated extension 32, which is ar ranged in a position-accessible to the user whereby the valve may be operated.
In order to provide for a neat and ornamental finish I wish it to be understood that the handles of the various valve stems may be covered by suitable screw-threaded cap members, such as illustrated at 33, by Fig. 6, which in this particular instance serves as a covering or cap for the handles of the pi'voted gripping members-22. Caps,
.such as described may be also used for covering the locks of the various compart- In'ents, which by shown at 34.
The compartments 2 and 6 are placed in communication with-each other by the perforated partition member 37 for the purpose of allowing a free passage of the disinfectant.
In the detail shown by Fig'. 5 of the drawings thereis provided a rack member 35 having arranged therein a plurality of aperway of illustration,
tures 36 for receiving and supporting,
spaced relation, various articles, such as pens, pencils, tooth brushes, etc.
Should it be desired to disinfect the room in which the cabinet is placed, I arrange an opening in the door, as at 38 and one in the top of the desk, as at 39. Into these openings are placed interiorly threaded bushings 38 and 39 respectively, which are normally closed by plugs 40, the said plugs having a complementally threaded part, whereby, they may be secured in the bushings 38 and 39. These caps may be removed, which, will create a draft through the disinfectant chamber and thus permit the fumes of the disinfectant to pass into the room.
Coming now to the operation of the device, it may be explained that a disinfectant is placed upon the absorbent surface of the curtain which has been previously unwound and held in its extended position by means of the gripping members 22, the valves 27 and 28 may be adjusted so as to open their respective portswhich will allow for the passage of the disinfectant into the compartments communicating with the various ports. If it is desired to prevent'the admission of disinfectant to any of the compartments the valve members arranged in those compartments may be adjusted so as to bring the valves in a position to close the ports and of course thereby render the compartments practically air-tight. Also, it is to be noted, that when the disinfectant receiving curtain is to be supplied with the necessary disinfectant the gripping members 22 Wlll be actuated so as to release the purtain and allow the same to be rewound. Access may be then had to the compartment by the provision of a suitable door or other opening which will allow for the necessary operation. 1
While I*have herein disclosed a specific embodiment of the invention which will be apparent to persons skilled in the use thereof difi'erentarrangement of parts from those herein shown and described, for producing a the desired results may be employed, together with mechanical equivalents to some or all of said parts, but I have utilized the present combination for the production of aavserviceableand praetical-aalisinfeeting cabinet, with the intention of claiming such a combination or structure.
vHaving thus described my invention what I claim is 4 1. A combined cabinet and desk for disinfecting purposes, including a, plurality of communicating compartments arranged therein, a spring wound curtain provided with an absorbent surface for receiving a {20 ing the curtain in its extended position,
ports formed in the partition walls of the net having a central compartment and a rear compartment, the wall between the central and rear compartments having port openings, valves for the openings, a spring roller mounted beneath the ports, a flexible absorbent fabric wound on the roller, a spring grip for receiving and holding the flexible absorbent fabric in an extended disinfectant receiving position, and perforated supports arranged in the cabinet accessible by thevalved ports for receiving the fumes pfbthe disinfectant on the flexible absorbent a no.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. v
