To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNEST C. SMAW, c'itizen of the United States, residing at Chesapeake, in the county of Northampton and State of Virginia, have invented certain useful Improvements in Ink-Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawmg.
This invention comprehends' the provision of an ink bottle embodying an auxiliary reservoir communicating with the main compartment of the bottle to receive, a predetermined quantity of fluid therefrom for each dip or insertion of the pen.
In carrying out the invention I provide a slide or closure for the mouth of the bottle and auxiliary reservoir with a view of preventing evaporation of the fluid, the said slides being manually operable in unison to permit access to be had to the bottle when desired, and automatically movable to normal or closed position subsequent to the removal of the pen therefrom.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the bottle constructed in accordance with my invention showing the slides or closures in normal position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the slides or closures in opened position.
Referring to the drawing in detail 10 indicates the bottle which may be constructed from any suitable material and design and 11 a tube depending within the bottle and lying flush with the upper surface thereof, the tube-being open at its'lower end for communication with an auxiliary reservoir 12 disposed immediately beneath the tube 10,
' the reservoir 12 also being opened at its lower end to communicate with the main compartment or bottle proper. The auxiliary reservoir 12 is adapted to receive and contain a predetermined quantity of fluid so that the pen will take the required quant1ty of ink at each insertion of the same into the bottle.
-Access to the bottle and auxiliary reservoir is coi'itrolled by means of a pair of spaced parallel slides 13 and 1% respectively. the slide 13 controlling access to the interior of the bottle while the latter mentioned slide is disposed immediately beneath the tube 11 and controls communication between the latter and the auxiliary reservoir, the respective slides being mounted to move within suitable guides 15. The slides are connected together by means of a vertical rod 16 which latter is connected as at 17 to the vertical portion 18 of the angular shaped operating member, which also includes a horizontal portion 19 disposed above the bottle, the operating member being pivoted as at 20 so that the slides 13 and 14 respectively will be moved in unison to either opened or closed position. The slides normally close the receptacle and the auxiliary reservoir with a view of preventing evaporation of the fluid, and in which position the horizontal portion 19 of the operating member is slightly elevated. In practice when use of the bottle is desired, the horizontal portion 19 is depressed causing the vertical portion 18 to move laterally and draw the slides 13 and 14 in the same direction to an opened position. This operation can be performed simultaneously with the insertion of the pen into the bottle. As the pen is withdrawn and pressure released from the horizontal portion 19 a spring 21 interposed between the bottle and'the portion 19 functions to elevate the latter thereby reversing the movement of the vertical portion 18 and causing the slides to automatically return to closed position.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be apparent I desire to have it understood that what is herein shown and described is merely illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention to which I do not limit myself, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
