TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, JR., AND WILLIAM SCHMID, OF KALA M AZOO, MICHIGAN,
ASSIGNORS TO SHAKESPEARE COMPANY, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
CONTROL DEVICE.
Specification of-Letters Patent Original application filed November 27, 1915, Serial No. 63,747. Divided and this application filed April 10,
1916. Serial No. 90,242.
{1'0 all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that we, WILLIAM SHAKE- sPnARE, J r., and WILLIAM SOHMID, citizens of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Control Devices, of which the following is a specification.
- This invention relates to improvements in control devices. Ourimproved control device is especially designed by us for use in connection with carbureters and we have illustrated the same as we have adapted it for use in that relation. shown in .our co-pending application for Letters Patent, filed November 27, 1915, ,Ser. No. 63,747, of which this is a divisional application.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved control device which may be conveniently mounted on the steeringpost of an automobile.
. Second, to provide an improved control device which is simple and compact in structure and very convenient to operate.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely" appear from the detailed description to follow.
We accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in' the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodi-.
ment of our invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a detail elevation of a structure embodying the features of our invention, no attempt having been made to maintain the relative proportion of the parts.
Fig. II is a detail side elevation of our control device with the face plate of the housing removed. I 1
Fig. III is a transverse section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Figs. I and II. Fig. IV is a detail section on a line corresponding to line H of Fig. II.
Fig. V is a plan view of the attaching strap. Fig. VI -is a front view of a modified form of our invention.
The carbureter illustrated is that l, illustrated, is preferably the structure of our said application for Letters Patent, and is provided with a valve lever 2. 3 represents a steering post of an automobile. The valve lever 2 is connected by the rod or wire 4 to the control lever 5. The control lever 5 is pivoted at 6 in the housing or casing comprising a side plate 7 having a peripheral flange 8. The flange 8 has a slot 8 therein through which the lever projects. The lever has an arm.9 to which the rod or wire 4 is connected at'10. This rod is disposed through a housing tube 11, one end of which is supported by the block 12 adapted to fit into an opening 13 in the walls of the housing, the ends of the block being slotted at 14 to engage the wall (see Figs. II
'and IV).
shaped spring 18 mounted on the pivot 17.
The housing is provided with a face plate 20. The lever pivot 6 is supported by the rear side plate and the face plate of the housing (see Fig. III).
The housing is adapted to be mounted on a starting post and, for convenience in mounting, the side plate 7 is provided with a slot 21 adapted to receive the notched end 22 of the securing strap 23. The other end of the securing strap is provided with an end piece 24. having athreaded bore therein for the screw 25. The strap is formed with a series of spaced notches forming a series of lugs 26 so that its end can be cut off to fit it to the particular post to which the housing is to be attached. In attaching, the notched end is inserted through the slot" 21 and given a half turn to engage the-lugs and is then drawn up by means of the screw 25-. The face plate is removably secured by means of the screws 27 so that this can be conveniently done.
. ed on the instrument board 29 of a motor vehicle, the housing being seated in a slot 30 formed in the board to receive it.
The lever 31 is pivoted at 32 in the housing and is extended through a slot 33. A detent 34, similar to the detent 16, is provided and the housing has suitable indicia indicating the positions of the lever.
Our improvedcontrol mechanism is very convenient to use and may be conveniently applied to steering posts of. common type and in the desired relation or position thereon.
Having thus described our. invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a structure of'the class described, the
combination of a housing comprising a sideplate having a flange-like edge wall thereon having a lever slot therein at one side, said side plate having a screw hole opening and a key hole opening disposed oppositely, a coacting removable side plate, an attaching strap notched at one end to provide attaching lugs so thatit may be inserted into said key hole opening and turned to engage the lugs, the other end of said strap being' adapted to receive a screw disposed in said.
screw hole, a lever pivot supported by said side plates, a lever mounted on said pivot and disposed through said slot in said edge wall, and an operating rod connected to said lever.
2. In a structure of the class described,
the combination of a housing comprising a side plate having a flange-like edge I wall thereon having a lever slot therein at one side, a lever pivot supported by said side plates, a lever mounted on said pivot and disposed'through said slot in said edge wall, said lever' being providedwith a notched stop segment, a spring pressed pawl mounted in said housing to coact vwith said segment, the notches of said segment being shaped to permit the pawl to pass into and out of engagement therewith without manual manipulation of the pawl and an operating rod connected to said lever.
3. In a structure .of the class described, the combination of a housing having a lever slot at one side thereof, a lever-pivoted within said housing and disposed through said slot, said lever being provided with a notched stop segment, a spring pressed pawl mounted in said housing to coact with said segment, the notches of said segment being shaped to permit the pawl to pass into and out of engagement therewith without manual manipulation of the pawl and an operating rod connected to said lever.
4:. In a structure of the class described, a mounting comprising a side plate having a screw hole opening and a strap opening disposed oppositely, andan attaching strap notched at one end to provide attaching lugs so that it may be inserted into said strap opening and turned to engage the lugs, the other end of said strap being adapted to receivea screw disposed in said screw hole.
5. Ina structure of the class described, a housing having a screw hole and'a slot disposed oppositely, an attaching strap provided with means for adjustably securing one end in said slot, the other end of said strap being tapped to receive a screw disposed in said screw hole.
6. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a housing comprising a side plate having a flange-like edge wall thereon, with a transverse opening at one side, a coacting'removable side plate, a lever mounted in said housing, an operating rod connected to said lever, a housing tube for said operating rod, and'a supporting block for said houslng tube inserted in said trans verse opening in said side wall and notched to engage the edges of the opening, said block being retained in said opening by said removable side plate housing.
7 In a structure of the class described, the combination of a housing having a slotlike opening, a removable part adapted to close the end of said slot when in position, and a housing tube provided with a supporting block inserted in said opening and engaging the edges thereof, said block being retained bysaid removable part when the same is secured in position.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands and seals in the presence of two witnesses.
