Description

C. W. BECK.
LUGGAGE CARRIER. APPLICATION FILED MAY 19. 1916.
Patented May 15,1917.
WBecVt Wifmem '50 hinged at F to the flange A CHRISTOPHER W. BECK, OF CANAS TOTA, SOUTH DAKOTA,
LUGGAGE-CARRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1191?.
Application filed May 19, 1916. Serial No. 98,667.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER W. BECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canastota, in the county of McCook and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Luggage-Carrier's; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters 'and figures of reference marked thereon, which forma part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in luggage carriers, especially adapted for attachment to the backs of seats upon automobiles, carriages, etc.,
and, when not in use, designed to be thrown into a compact form.
The invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the carrier showing it folded and secured to the back of a seat.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the carrier showing it similarly secured but unfolded, the figure being partially broken away, the
manner of collapsing the sides and front being illustrated in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 2, and
40 F Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 44 of i .3. I teference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the back of a luggage carrier having a marginal The ends of the carrier are made up of two sections B and C, hinged togetherby' the rods E, the said section B being hinged to the back, ras shown in Fig. 2
of the drawings. F designates a bottom and carrying folding feet H, which are held by the straps J, one of which is shown clearly in Fig. 4 of the drawings, which straps are formed by upsetting a portion of the bottom. The ends of said folding feet, which are bail-shaped, have squared portions J as shown in Fig. 4c and are so formed in order that the feet may be held inoperative positions or in closed positions by the resilient straps J holding frictionally the feet in their adjusted position. The front of the luggage carrier is designated by letter N and when folded, is covered by the bottom F, the sides and bottom being surrounded by the flange A.
Loops T are mounted upon the back section, and S comprise solid pieces which are apertured atone end to receive the loops A clamping member S is hinged at S and provided with an adjusting screw R adapted to clamp the rod R.
When it is desired to collapse the luggage carrier so as to assume the position shown in Fig. l of the drawings, the ends are turned upon the pivotal rod E to the positions shown bydotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings and which will draw the side N toward the rear of the carrier and by further folding of the ends so that the outer faces of the hinged ends will come in contact with each other, the side N and the ends will be positioned inside of the flange A, after which the bottom may be folded up parallel to the back and thelegs folded against the bottom.
What I claim to be new is A luggage carrier comprising a back with flanges at the top and bottom, end sections pivoted together, one section of each end pivoted to the back between said flanges, a bottomhinged to a flange of the back and a side hinged to the outer of the end sections and designed when the ends are folded, to be positioned between said flan es, resilient struck up portions in the ottom, bail-shaped members having ends frictlonally held by said struck up portions, loops secured to the back, and means adapted to be fastened to a robe rail and engaging said loops.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTOPHER W. BECK. Witnesses:
G. H. DAWSON, W. H. GALVIN.
