WILLIAM 7. BONIEIELD, OF CLEVELAND, GI-IIC.
APPARATUS FOR FEEDING SCALE-PREVENTIVE INTO BOILERS.
Application filed December 12, 1913.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM 1V. BON- rmLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Feeding Scale-lrcventive into Boilers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is for an apparatus for feeding' scale preventive into boilers while in operation and has for its general object to provide such a device which shall act continuously to force a preventive into the boiler against the pressure within the same.
1t has heretofore been the common practice' to wait until the boiler was not operating to put in such preventive or scale removing compound, or, if the preventive were to be put in while the boiler was in operation, it was at intervals, mixed with water in a suitable receptacle and forced quickly into the boiler. This operation being repeated periodically does not, however, produce the best results, `With my apparatus, the scale preventive may be fed to the boiler continuously during the operation of the water feeding means.
A more specific object is to provide means whereby the feeding of the preventive may be accurately regulated. Another object is to provide means for mixing a powdered compound, such as powdered graphite, with i water and agitating such mixture to facilitate the operation of the apparatus.
My invention is hereinafter more fully described in connection with the drawing, and the essential characteristics set out in the claim.
1n the drawing, Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view showing` the arrangement of my device connected with the usual water feeding apparatus; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of my device and the adjacent connections, some of the parts being sectioned for clearness of illustration.
somewhat ovoid reservoir 5 is suitably secured by means of feet 6 rigid therewith to a suitable support. At the upper end this reservoir is provided with a threaded opening 8 into which is screwed a suitable bushing 9 having a central threaded opening fitted with avent cock 10. Near the lower end of the reservoir is a threaded opening 12 into which is tted one end of a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1917. Serial No. 806,246.
short pipe .13 which at its other end, is screwed into a cross pipe connection 15.
.Fitted into the member l5 opposite the pipe 13, is one end of a pipe nipple 16, the other end of which is suitably threaded into a needle valve 1S. rEhe valve 18 has a valve seat 19 adapted to receive the tapered point of the needle plug` 20 threaded into the opposite end of the valve body and controlled, to `open and close the valve, by a suitable hand wheel 21. An opening through the seat 19 communicates with a tube 22, which is threaded into the seat at 24 and is of such a diameter that it extends inside the pipes 13 and 16 leaving' a space between the outside of it and the inside of the outer pipe for the passage of liquid. rllhis tube extends into the reservoir 5, bends downwardly at 25, and is closed at its lower end except for a number of small openings 26 adapted to send jets of water in different directions against the bottom of the reservoir. Leading to one side of the valve 18 and having threaded connections therewith, is a pipe 28 which is connected, as indicated at 29, with the discharge pipe 30 leading from the feed pump 32 to the boiler 33.
A short pipe 35 leads from the upper side of the member 15 to a second needle valve 8G. This valve has a plug or needle 38 having a threaded engagement with the body of the plug, so that it may be moved to and away from its seat 40 by means of n suitable hand wheel all. The upper side of this valve is connected with a pipe 42 which is provided with an elbow 4:3 and leads horizontally at 44 to the upper end of a sight glass L15 which is connected at its lower end, as indicated at 16, with the suction pipe 4S of the pump 32. The lower side of the member 15 may be provided with a suitable drain cock 50.
Now in operating my device, the plug 9 is removed and a suitable amount of powdered graphite or other scale preventive put into the reservoir. The needle valve 18 is 'then opened slightly allowing water to enter the reservoir through the tube 22 and the openings 26 in the end thereof, the action of which thoroughly mixes the powder with water. rlhe vent cock 10 is left open until the reservoir is filled, allowing all the air to escape and is then closed,
which causes the pressure of the water with-.
in the reservoir to rise. The pressure of the water in the discharge pipe of the feed pump forces the Water out through the pipe 13, outside the tube 22, into the member 15 and up through the needle valve 8S, the pipe 42, the sight glass e5 and the connections described, to the suction pipe 48 of the feed pump and thence through the discharge pipe into the boiler. The pressure of the discharge pipe readily causes the flow of the mixture from the reservoir While the suction at the intake pipe insures it being drawn into the Water which is being fed to the boiler. The amount of Water passing to the reservoir may be accurately controlled by the needle valve 18, and the amount of mixture or preventive passing from the reservoir to the boiler may be accurately controlled by the needle valve 36. Accordingly, by regulating these valves, exactly the desired amount of scale preventive may be continuously fed to the boiler.
The vibration of the Water, caused by the pump, prevents the particles ofthe scale preventive adhering` to the sides of the passages of my apparatus, and clogging the same.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, What I claim is:
In an apparatus of the character described, t-he combination of. a boiler, means for feeding liquid thereto having a high pressure and a low pressure side, a reservoir for a graphite mixture to be fed to the boiler, the reservoir having a dished bottom, an opening at the upper portion, 'a vent cock fitted into said opening, a second opening intermediate the top and bottom of the reservoir, a connection between said openingk and the low pressure side of the feeding means, and a connection from the high pressure side of the feeding means having a pipe smaller in diameter than said opening and leading therethrough and terminating. adjacent the dished bottom of the reservoir.
In. testimony whereof, I hereunto affixmy signature in 'the presence of tvvo` Witnesses.
WILLIAM WV. BONFIELI).
