Description

F. MACD- FAIRGRIEVE.
.COUPLING ELEMENT, APPLICATION HLED'JUNE 1s, I9i6.
Patented May1'5, 1917.
275075 50.. Pnomumm, wasum NITED FETATEB PATENT FREDERICK MACDONALD FAIBGBIEVE, 0F TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA.
COUPLING ELEMENT.
Application filed June 16, 1916.
To all whom it 112 my concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK MAcDoN- ALI) FAIRGRIEVE, residing in the city of To ronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, a subject of the King of Great Britain, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coupling Elements, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in coupling elements, and relates more particularly to the production of a hinge element whereby handles and like articles may be coupled to a door or other member, and the object of my invention is to manufacture a coupling element from sheet metal in such a manner that the pivotal element will form an integral part of said element, and the construction of my preferred form of invention will be hereinafter particularly set forth, as well as a modification thereof, and what I claim as new will be pointed out in the claims forming part of this speoification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my preferred form of coupling element as stamped out; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of this preferred form showing the element buckled to permit of the union therewith of the member to be hinged or coupled thereto; Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section through the 'front of an oven formin art of a as stove, showing my coupling element used to hinge a handle to the door of the said gas stove, and Fig. 4 is perspective view of a modified form of my coupling element, showing the same adapted to the coupling of two members together, disposed substan tially at right angles each to the other.
In the drawings, like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
In putting my invention into practice, I take a piece A of sheet metal of the desired gage. and stamp thereout of two holes B which are spaced apart and in alinement as illustrated in Fig. 1. Preferably at the same time the holes B are stamped out, I cut through the stock along the line C for the length of the piece of stock D, thus forming a tongue which performs the function of a pintle. In order to couple a member to the coupling element just described, it is necessary to buckle this coupling element along the line oa S0 buckling Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1917.
Serial No. 104,106. I
the coupling element forms a clear passage E between the free end of the tongue D and the body-portion of the coupling element, thus enabling the head F of the arm G to be passed through the said passage. The head F is provided with a hole H, and as this head is passed into the passage E, the same is'slipped over the tongue D. The coupling element is then pressed back into the position illustrated in Fig. 1, thus preventing the removal of the arm G therefrom. The arm G in Fig. 3 is shown asso ciated with a coupling element in order to show how this arm and the bar I carried thereby (which bar at its opposite end supports another arm G not shown) may be hinged to the door J of the oven K. The lip L of the head F will engage with the bar M carried by the oven to retain the door J closed. The holes B permit of the free movement of the head F for engaging and disengaging purposes in respect of the bar M. In this showing, the tongue D is of sufficient size to easily fit the hole A hole 6 is formed in the door J to permit of the placing of the arm G.
In Fig. 4, I illustrate a modified form of my invention. 2 represents a metal plate in which have been formed the holes B and the tongue D 3 is a metal plate provided with a slot a through which passes the tongue D thus coupling the plates 2 and 3 together substantially in a position at right angles to eachother. From the foregoing part of the specification, without further description it will be understood how the plates 2 and 3 are coupled together. From the disclosure made in Fig. t particularly, it will be understood that my coupling element and the method of employing the same may be made use of in various fields, for instance, in con nection with mechanical toys. The slot 4: in Fig. 4 is shaped to conform to the tongue D and therefore it will be understood that there will be no movement of the plate 3 on the tongue D At the same time the holes B are formed, if desired I may form the holes 5 in the preferred form of coupling element through which the attaching means therefor passes. The shape of the coupling element is of course, immaterial, as will be understood.
While I have described what I consider to be the best embodiment of my invention, I do not confine myself to the construction herein shown and described, except in so far as that may be necessary by reason of the prior art and the terms of my claims.
One of the principal objects of my invention is to reduce the cost of manufacture of hinges for door handles used particularly in connection with gas stoves, and it will be understood by one skilled in this art, that my disclosure can be manufactured and attached much more cheaply than any other similar coupling element with which I am aequainted.
From the foregoing specification, together with the disclosures made by the drawings, it will be understood that the tongue D, together with the holes B, must essentially be placed within the perimeter of the coupling element.
l/Vhat I claim as my invention is:
1. As a new article of manufacture a coupling element within the perimeter of which has been stamped tWo alined holes, and a tongue positioned between said holes, the top and bottom edges of which are substantially parallel to each other; one side of said tongue being severed from said coupling element, but normally resting substantially in eontact therewith.
2. The combination with a coupling ele ment provided with two alined holes separated by a tongue, the top and bottom edges of which are substantially parallel to each other, one end of said tongue being severed from said coupling element, which element is designed to be buckled on a line passing substantially centrally through said holes and tongue, to provide a passageway through said coupling element, of an element provided with a hole passed into said passageway and coupled to said tongue by means of 49 Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
