Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 1917.
Application led A'ugust 2, 1916. Serial No. 112,759.
To all whom zt may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER P. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in-the county of Spokane, State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Oil or Gas Burning Smelting- Furnace; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an oil or gas burning smelting furnace, and an object of the invention is to improve, simplify, and render more ractical and efficient the structure of smelting furnace illustrated, set forth and -claimed in the patent to O. P. Moore, dated September 14, 1915, Patent Number 1,153,561.
Another object of the invention is to promeans ass from the smelting chamber or crucible into the pre-heating and reduction chamber,
and also having means whereby a larger eX posure of the surface of ore in the smelting chamber is exposed to the heat, which pass through the interstices between the ore in the smelting chamber and the ore 1n the preheating and reduction chamber.
Another object of the invention is to provide means in the pre-heating and reduction chamber for retarding the ore in said chamber.y In other words, to divide the ore and cause it to descend quickly, said means temporarily retaining, or retarding the ore, thereby' obviating the employment of `water cooled grates in the direct passage of the,-
hot gases.
Another object of the invention is to provide means consisting of water cooled bars adapted to reciprocate through a 4water cooled plate which is set or embedded in the wall of the furnace back of the retaining or retarding means, thereby constituting means to push or inject the ore forwardly into the throat of the smelting chamber.
A further object of the invention is to provide means to permit allthe air used in the combustion of the fuel 1n the smelting or refining chamber to be'drawn through the walls between the fines, leading from thev sides of the refining or smelting chamber from points just below the entrance of the jets of heat and connectingpwith'the discharge flue beneath the floor of said chamchamber and pre-heat- A further object of the invention is to permit the ore and fluxes to be charged into the pre-heating and reduction chamber.
In practical fields, the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a` vertical sectional view through the improved furnace constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrw.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view lon line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
VFig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on line Ll--c of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional perspective view of the base of the furnace, clearly showing the smelting chamber, showing the flues 15 and 16 in full and alsothe flue 23b in full, and the lues 23 and 23a in dotted lines.
Fig. 6 is a detail fra mentary perspective sectional view of the ase of the furnace, showing the smelting chamber, and illustrating the ues 23, 23EL and 23b in full, and the fiues 15 and 16 in dotted lines.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates a foundation, which may be constructed of concrete or cement or the like, in which an outlet flue 2 is constructed, and which flue may be connected to the chimney stack (not shown), in any suitable manner (not shown). The wall of this fiue is constructed of any suitable fire brick, as V illustrated. Constructed upon and rising upwardly therefrom is the base wall 3 of the smelting furnace, and whichbase may be of any 'suitable-shape or contour, and isA surrounded by a metallic sheeting 4, and at points directly opposite each other, the wall of the base 3 is provided with openings 5, through which the heat injecting tubes 6 extend, for projecting the heat flames from any suitable fuel, such as oil, gas or powdered coal, upon the bath. The base 3 is provided with a smelting or refining cham ber 7'. The bottom 8 of the smelting chamber is provided with the usual form of cavity or depression 9, which is .provided with a suitable furnace lining 10, which is constructed'of any suitable material, for instance, fire clay or the like, and which lining overlies a portion of the upper edge of, the bottom of the smelting or refining chamber, as shown at 11. Referring to Fig. 2
it is to be seen that one of the side walls of l, the base 3 is provided with an outlet `pas sage or tap 12, for drawing ofi' the slag frol` the top of the molten metal or bath in the chamber 7.

sired, for drawing off the slag and molten metal. The-wall having the taps or openings 12 and 13 is provided with an opening 14 and door therefor, which is above the upper surface of the bath of ore, and by opening the door (not shown) from said opening, a suitable tool or implement may be inserted through the opening, for agitating slag upon the upper surface of the bath 1li ore through the opening 21, including a proper amount of lime and carbon.
of ore, so as to work the slag toward the tap or opening 12, whereby the slag may be sides of the smelting or refining chamber ati easily drawn ofi". Leading from oppositeib] points immediately below where the heat nig flames enter said chamber are flues 15 hav- I flues are in communication with the flue 2 by means of the port 17. The furnace stack rises upwardly from the base 3 of the furnace and is provided with a surrounding metallic sheeting 20. The upper end of the stack 19 is provided withan opening 21 concentric with the center of the stack, that is in plan view, andA through which opening, the ore and flux .may be charged into the preheating and reduction chamber' by any suitable device (not shown). This opening 21, may be closed by any suitable means (not shown). As shown clearly in Fig. 2, the Walls 22 between the fines 15 and 16 are provided with air passages 23, which lead p `the bottom of the smeltinglor refining chamber, but do not communicate with the discharge chamber and discharge flue 2a and 2,
Below the tap or opening 12 isf.,- a second opening ortap 13, for drawing off Vthe molten metal.
may be plugged in the usual manner (no f shown) by means of clay plugs, which may be removed in any suitable manner when de- 19 'rises from the base 3, tubular waterl cooled bars 27 are embedded, which water cooled bars are supported upon the I-beams 28, which water cooled beams 27 act toV reinforce the structure, and keep the same cool. Also embedded in the stack adjacent where it rises .from the base are water cooled beams 29, through which rods 30 may be Extending transversely of the stack is a triangular beam 31, and about. this metal beam, a substantially triangular or wedge shaped fire brick structure or arch 32 is constructed, the apex of which is finished oii1 with a solid metallic beam 33 triangular in cross section, acting to protect the fire brick structure, and together with the sides 34 (which are inclined) act to. defiect the ore upon the ledge 35 at the lower part of the pre-heating and reduction chamn ber, where theore, by means of' the rods 30,
can be fed or projected through the opening 26 into the refining or smelting chamber.
Vhen smelting or refining ore, the pre.-
heating and reduction chamber receives the It is to be noted that the fire brick Wedge shaped arch or structure 32 extends trans- 1versely of the pre-heating and reduction 'cham-ber, adjacent its lower portion. Said arch or wedge shaped structure is Wide enough to overlie or overhang the ledges. 35 at the bottom of the pre-heating and reduction chamber` so thatvas the ore deposits into the pre-heating and reduction chamber through the filling opening21, the ore will be deflected by the inclined sides 34 of the wedge shaped arch toward and upon said ledges.v The hot gases fromthe smelting or refining chamber are drawn into and' through the pre-heating and reduction chamber, by means of natural or mechanical draft, owing to the opening 18a being connected to and in communication with the chimney stack, not shown, but as described in said Patent Number 1,153,561), thereby pre-heating and deoxidizing the ore prior to entering 'the smelting or refining chamber. The ore is held in the preheating and reduction chamber and out of the opening 26', between the pre-heating and refining chambers, by means of the ledges 35, which support the ore. By reciprocating the rods 30 (which are water cooled owing 'tothev passing through the bars 29, through which 'eciprocated in any suitable manner (not shown).
cold water circulates) the ore may be fed in any desired quantities, from the ledges 35 through the opening 26 into the smelting or refining chamber, and upon which ore or bath the heat flames from opposite sides of the smelting or refining chamber are projected. Through ebullition or boiling in smelting, the ore is distributed over the whole surface o f the smelting zone, thereby exposing the greatest possible surface of the ore to the action of the heat. By inserting some suitable tool through the opening 14, the slag on the surface of the ore or bath may be agitated toward the outlet 12,. through which 'the slag may be drawn, when the clay plug is removed, while the molten metal may be drawn off through the outlet 13, when its clay plug is removed.
The Hue 2 is designed to be connected to `the chimney stack, not shown, in lthe same manner as a similar Hue in said ().P. Moores Patent 1,153,561 would be connected. Furthermore, the opening 18a is designed to be also connected to said chimney stack, as stated in said prior patent. However, these connections of communication with said chimney stack may have conventional means, not shown, whereby the draft may be controlled. Hence, when the connection of communication between the opening 18a is closed by any suitable or conventional means, not shown, and the connection of communication between the Hue 2 and said chimney 'stack is open, a natural draft is created, in a manner hereinafter set forth, for instance, cold air is drawn through the air passage 25 and into one of the flues 23a, which extends under the bottom of the smelting or refining chamber, and yis in communication with the other Hues 23a (which extend under the bottom of the smelting or refining chamber) by means of the right angled extending Hue part 23". The cold air circulates through the fines 23, 23h and upwardly through said Hues 23, which are substantially parts of the Hues 23, and into the smelting or refining chamber. Therefore, a draft being created through the Hues 15 and 16 and through the discharge chamber 2a and the Hue 2, the cold air will naturally pass off therethrough. The cold air in passing through said Hues 23a and 23 acts 'to cool the bottom of the smelting chamber, and this air, while cooling the bottom of the smelting chamber, in itself, becomes pre-heated before it enters the smelting chamber by the heat which is drawn from .the smelting chamber through the flues 15 and 16, and out through the discharge chamber 2a and the Hue 2. This circuit is maintained, while smelting and refining the orc. However, while the ore and slag are being drawn from then smelting chamber, other ore is being pre-heated, while on the ledges of the prelieating chamber,
owing to drawing the heat from the smelti ing chamber into the preheating and reduction chamber, by' causing an upward draft,
kwhich' is created, by cutting off communi- 25, is such as to provide an upward draft into the prelieating or reduction chamber 18, which is formed in the chimney stack 19.`
By causing this upward draft, theore is preheated and deoxidized before entering the ,f refining chamber, and aftery being so preheated and deoxidized, the rods 30 are reciprocated, thereby discharging the ore through the opening 26 in the smelting or refining chamber.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a furnace; the combination of a smelting or refining chamber anda preheating and reduction chamber incommunication at its bottom with said refining chamber, and having a Hlling opening at its top axially with said opening of communication; of a wedge shaped arch extending transversely of said pre-heating chamber, adjacent the bottomV portion thereof, just above the opening of communication in substantially direct line with said filling, thereby dividing the ore and delectingsame upon opposite sides of the bottom of the preheating chamber, said opposite sides of the bottom constituting ledges for retaining or retarding the ore in said pre-heating chamber; and means in opposite walls of the preliea'ting chamber, adapted to be reciprocated at intervals, for feeding the ore through said opening of communication, into said refinlng chamber.
2.v 1n ya furnace; the combination of a prei' heating and reduction chamber and a smelting or refining chamber in communication at its top with said pre-heating chamber; of means, at opposite sides of the refining chamber adjacent the top, to throw Haines over the surface of the bath; the lower por- 'tion of the base of the furnace having an air passage, and air Hues leading from the opposite sides of the refining chamber from` pointsjust below said means and connecting with said air passage beneath the Hoor of the refining chamber; a discharge chamber and Hue in the base of the furnace; and heat Huesleading from the opposite sides of the refining chamber at points just below said means and extending under the Hoor of the refining chamber and communicating with the discharge chamber, the relation of said heat fines and the air Hues, and the air passage, and the discharge chamber being such as to provide a draft out through the discharge, a circuit of air passing from the air fines through the heat fues, the relation benan-1e to this specifi-cation in the presence tween the air ues and the air passage being of two subscribing witnesses.
such as to providea partial upward draft OLIVER P. MOORE. in the preheating chamber at a time when Witnesses: 5 the discharge may be closed. IRA HONEFEUGER,
In testimony whereof I have signed my A. G. STARKEY.
