COMBINATION RANGE.

coma'rion Application filed October 1c, isie. Serial a. 124,783.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Boone HOGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing atGeneva,
in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination-Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combination ranges or ranges in which the heat is adapted to be supplied either by the usual firebox, or by gas burners, or by both the firebox and the gas burners.
More particularly the invention is concerned with improvements in the oven structure of such a stove and has for an object to improve the distribution of heat in such an oven when heated by a gas burner and also to provide an oven which may. be
quickly' brought to the desired temperature when using the gas burner as a source of heat.
To provide for the alternative or dual heating stoves of this type, it is common to provide the oven with a pocket containing the gas burner. When the gas burner is not in use the pocket is closed by a suit able cover. en gas is used for heating the oven the cover is moved to disclose the burner which is lighted. Also a deflector plate or false oven bottom is inserted in the oven over the burner so that the heated products of combustion are diflused throughout the oven. A suitable vent provides for passing the spent gas from the oven.
I have discovered that, without impairing the heating eficiency-the ventilation of the oven is improved, the distribution of heat throughout the oven is better, and the oven may be brought to high temperature.
in a shorter time by providing as unrestricted a path as possible for the passage of the gas from the burner to the vent.
This is accomplished by disposing the burner and the vent adjacent opposite edges .of the deflector plate, whereby the latter ofl'ers a minimum of resistance to the fiow of the heated products of combustion. The flow of heat above and below the deflector is suitably proportioned by properly disposing the burner with respect to the edge of the deflector plate. I
A'stove which embodies my invention is disclosed in the drawing in which the figure shows a perspective view of the oven of a combination range.
Specification of Letters Patent.
side of the cover or damper (4).
In the drawing the oven (1) is provided I with a pocket (2) which contains the burner under side of pover (4) to facilitate the opening of the same.
When the gas burner is in use the deflector plate or removable oven plate (7) is insorted in the oven and assumes the position shown. In this position the lug (8) on plate (7) serves to retain the cover (4) in its Patented May 8, 1917.
open position. The plate (7) is supported I above the oven bottom by means of the lugs (9) and (10) preferably made integral with the plate. Two similar lugs not shown are provided adjacent the back edge of the plate.
Opposite the burner (3), thevent (11) is provided along the bottom edge of oven wall 15). To provide for the heated air above the plate (7 passing to the vent (11), the edge (14) of plate (7) is spaced from oven wall (15) by means of the lugs (12) and (13) integral with the plate.
As shown in the drawing the burner and "the vent are at opposite sides of the oven and the plate (7 has one edge adjacent the burner and another edge adjacent the vent. The, heated air, gases, etc., on leaving the burner, divide, part passing between the plate (7) and the oven bottom to the vent,
and the remaining part passing, above the plate and across the oven to the outlet or vent (11). The amount passing above the plate is properly proportioned with respect to the amount passing below the same by spacing the plate (7 the proper distance above the oven bottom and byproperly spacing the edge (16) of plate (7 from the under By suitably selecting the length of the supporting lugs (9) and (10) and of the spacing lug (8), the heated air passing above the plate isproperly proportioned to that passing below the same. Stoves in which the various parts are proportioned as herein shown have been found togive excellent results.
By reason of this disposition of the burner,
vent and plate, the heated gases pass across I let or vent.
While I have shown but a single embodiment of myinve'ntion, it is obvious that-it may take other forms and that the actual positions of the burner, plate andvent may be changed while retaining the same relative positions.
I claim 1. A combination range. comprlsmg an oven, a burner pocket at one side of said even, a burner in said pocket, a vent for said oven, and a deflector plate having oneportion of its edge adjacent said burner pocket, whereby the heated gases on leaving said burner pass partly above said plate and partly below the same, said deflector plate having another portion of its edge adjacent said vent, whereby the passage of memes heated gases through said oven is substantially unrestricted.
2. A range comprising an oven, means for supplying heat to said oven, avent in said oven and a deflector plate having one portion of its edge adjacent said means, whereby the heat from said means passes partly above said plate and partly below the same, said deflector plate having another portion of its edge adjacent said vent, whereby the passage of heat through said oven is substantially unrestricted.
3. A range comprising an oven, means said oven, said means and said vent being at opposite sldes of sald oven, and a deflector for supplying heat to said oven, a-vent for plate removable from said oven and having one portion of its edge adjacent said means, whereby the heat from said means passes partly above said plate and partly below the same, said deflector plate having another portion of its edge adjacent said vent, whereby the passage of heat through said oven is substantially unrestricted.
