EVAN ALLEN BARTLEIT, 0F FAIR'MONT, WEST VIRGINIA.
POSTERIOR INJECTION-PROTECTOR.
Speecaton of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 1917.
Application iled May 25, 1916. Serial No. 99,850.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that l, EVAN A. BARTLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairmont, in the county of Marion and State of vWest Virginia, have invented certain new and usehil improvements in Posterior Injection-Protectors; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make the use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in posterior injection protectors and is particularly adaptable for use in treating gonorrheal affections in their primary or initial stages, and my object is to provide means for closing the urethra at a point beyond the seat of aiection to prevent the force of the injection carrying the germs into the posterior portions of the urethra.
A further object is to provide means. for mechanically holding the protector in position and the urethra closed until such time as it is desired to release the same.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the accompanying specification.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of my device ready for use.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof as seen on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of a modified form of device.
Fig. 4 is a similar view of a further modified form of device, and
Fig. 5 is a similar view of a still further modified form of device.
Referring to the drawings in which simithe central portion of the clamp having an oval shaped knob or projection 6 extending inwardly therefrom which is adapted to direct strong pressure against the urethra and firmly close the same when the stem 3 is moved inwardly the required distance.
ln order to permit the stem 3 to rotate independently of the clamp 5, said clamp is provided with a cavity 7 into which extends the inner end of the stem 3, said stem having a peripheral channel 8 near its inner end into which takes a pin 9, threaded through one edge of the body portion 1, thus swivelly attaching the clamp to the stem.
ln Fig. 3 of the drawings, the knob 10 is shown as attached directly to the inner wall of the body l, thus requiring that the clamp 11, cooperating therewith, be placed abov-e the yparts being treated in order to bring the pressure of the knob directly on to the urethra.
instead of using a threaded stem for forcing the clamp against the parts being treated, a smooth stem 12 may be provided, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, to the inner end of which is attached a clamp 13 having a knob 14 thereon, a coil spring 15 being introduced around the stem between the clamp and body 16, for forcing the clamp and knob inwardly.
lThe body 16 is provided with an offset portion 17 to form a recess 18 in which the spring may seat when the stem 12 is retracted its full distance, the outer end of said stem having a pull knob 19 so that the stem may be readily pulled outwardly.
A still different form of device is shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, and in this instance the stein 2O is provided with ratchet teeth 21 along one edge, with which coperates a pawl 22, pivotally attached to an ear 23 extending outwardly from the body 24, so that when the stem 2O is moved inwardly,
the pawl will hold the clamp 25 and knob 26 in engagement with the parts being treated until the pawl is manually released from the teeth.
It will thus be seen that l have provided a cheap, durable and positive form of clamping means for preventing injections from reaching the posterior portions of the urethra and one that will remain in proper position until such time as it is desired to remove the same.
ies
It will further be seen that this device may be quickly applied to use or removed from the parts being treated, and in view of the Contour of the various parts of the device, it may be used without injury to the person.
It will likewise be understood that the protector may be made of any suitable strong and durable material such as hard rubber, metal, or similar substances.
I claim l. A protector of the class described' comprising a circular hollow body portion, a substantially crescent shaped clamp within the hollow of said body, means to move said clamp inwardly and an oval shaped knob adapted to be forced into engagement with parts of the body to close passage through said parts.
2. A protector for `parts of the body, Com- 20 'prising a hollow circular body portion, a
substantially crescent shaped clamp adapted to be forced into engagement with said parts of the body, and a knob coperating with said clamp to close passage through 25 EVAN ALLEN BARTLETT.
