To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR M. Snrnnn, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Fairfield, in the county of Jeii'erson and State or Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Carriers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to the handling of bottles, and more particularly milk bottles, in the retailing of milk.

The invention consists in the application to the neck of the bottle of a detachable bail adapted to hold the bottle by the terminal bead, and by means of which a considerable number of the bottles may be easily carried by one hand.

The nature of the invention is fully disclosed in the description and claims follow-- ing, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view in perspective, showing a milk bottle with the improved carrier attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the upper end of such a bottle, with the carrier in position for attachment. Fig. 3 is a side View, showing the card-holding portion of the bail.

In the drawing, A denotes an ordinary milk bottle, having the usual bead H at the top. This bead serves to hold the carrier from slipping Oh when in attached position, as shown in Fig. 1-. The carrier is composed of 'three parts, and is formed or" wire. One of these is a bail B. One leg of the bail has a simple eye B to engage a coil E forming a part of one of the clasp stirrups, to be described presently. The other leg of the bail has a loop or eye 13 to engage the other coil of the stirrup, but the end of the wire is continued to form an enlarged and corrugated clip D straddling the leg of the bail. The upper, curved end of this clip, D bends outwardly as shown in Fig. 3, and makes it easy to insert the ticket C, which is held neatly and firmly in place between the curved shoulders D and the bail.

The stirrup I to which the bail attaches has a semicircular body to partially encircle the neck of the bottle and upstanding ears or loops F, bent to form the coils E above mentioned. The descending leg of each of said loops is preferably bent laterally at l? to prevent the detachment of the other stirrup L. This is provided with a loop J at each end inclosing both legs of the suspension loops or ears, and adapted to slip up and down thereon. When in the upper position,

as shown in Fig. 2, the carrier may be easily attached to the bottle, the two half-rings or stirrups then admitting the bead at the top of the bottle. When the parts are slipped to the position shown in Fig. l the ring formed by the stirrups is smaller than the head, and the bottle cannot escape. In order that the body of the stirrup I may lie close under the bead a depression I is formed to receive the loop J when in holding position.

The device provides a pleasant and convenient way of handling milk put up in hot tles, or other commodities of a similar nature. It is entirely sanitary, as the hand of the distributer need not touch the bottle at all. It enables a person to carry a half dozen or more bottles in one hand, thus dispensing with a basket or crate. It also tends to prevent breakage, especially at the hands of children or by any person in cold weather, when the cold bottle is unpleasant to carry and very liable to slip out of the hand. Its construction is such that it may be detached in a moment for the washing and filling of the bottle, and as quickly attached for use.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A bottle-carrier, comprising a suspending bail and a pair of half-ring stirrups, to encircle the bottle-neck, one of the stirrups having upstanding ears to connect with said bail, and the other stirrup having terminal loops engaging said ears, the opening be tween said stirrups being made larger or smaller by slipping the looped stirrup up or down.

2. A bottle-carrier, comprising a suspending bail having one of its legs extended to form a ticket-holder, with eyes in said bail to connect with bottle-holding stirrups, a pair of half-ring bottle-holding stirrups, one of them having a pair of upstanding ears coiled at the upper ends, the other having terminal loops inclosing said ears and slidable thereon, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
