C. E. REORDAN. METHOD AND APPARATUS FOH GENEHATING MOTIVE FLUID. APPLICATION man 1M. 1.V 1914.

CHARLES E. CREORDAN, 0F DALLAS, TEXAS.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. REORDAN,
ratus for Generating Motive Fluid, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in methods and apparatus for generating motive fluid andA one of the objects of my invention is to provide a source of combustion or combustion chamber, which is disposed outside of the generator and which is ar ranged to deliver the products of combustion to the generator, and preferably below the water level therein, to generate steam,.
and a motive fluid, composed o f the steam and gases of combustion, for delivery to any of the several forms of steam engines.
It is one of the objects. of my invention to effect combustion outside of the generator so that the heat will not be drawn off thereby and for the further reason that I can obtain combustion under a' resultantly higher temperature so that the delivered combus-` tion gases to the contents of the generator wille have a steam generating efficiency. A further object in effect-ing combustion cutside of a generator is to provide means for more readily controlling the intensity of heat under which lcombustion iseffected, and to provide an externalpressure of the desired extent to counteract internal combustion pressure and thereby avoid the necessity of complication in the construction of the combustion chamber to take care of internal pressure.
Other object-s and features of my invention will be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and will be more particularly pointed out in and by the appended claims. l l
The accompanying drawing yillustrates the device of my invention in vertical section and illustrates the manner of delivery of the products of combustion to a generator.
As illustrated, 1 designa-tesa generator in the form of a steam boiler in which the water level is indicated at 2.
A combustion chamber is shown at 3 and may comprise a substantially globular casing having an air and oil inlet opening 4,
land an outlet opening 5 for the products of combustion, and an inlet opening 6 for an ignition device. The ignition device may Specification of Letters Patent. i

comprise an ignition ball or sphere 7, of hollow construction and having a stem 8 provided with a flange 9 adapted for anchorage to a complementally formed fiange on the casing 3. A Bunsen burner or like initial heater is indicated at 10 and extends into the hollow stem 8 for delivery to the ball or sphere 7 The ball 7 will be constructed of a metal which is susceptible of being heated to a very high temperature in a relatively short space of time. rllhe casing 3 is provided with a flange 11 which may be bolted to an extension 12, of the boiler l, to cause the opening 5 to register with a delivery pipe 13 adapted to extend downwardly yinto the boiler 1. The combustion delivery pipe 13` is substantially L-shaped and on its upwardly extending terminal 14 provide a 4 non-return valve which may consist of a casing 15, having a valve seat 16, and adapted to be Secured to the terminal end 14 by bolts 1'?. A check valve 18 is arranged to close passage downwardly through said casing l5 under boiler pressure but to permit passage through said casing 15 to said boiler. Any suitable stop such as indicated at 19 may be -provided to limit uiiseating movement of the valve closure 18. The casing 15 is provided with a discharge opening 20.
A source of Supply of combustion supporting media, which may be air, will be supplied to the combustion chamber through the opening 4 by means of a pipe 21. The pipe 21 may be connected with a source of supply of air under pressure in excess of the boil/er pressure so as to unseat the check valve 18. A source of supply of combustible fluid will be supplied to the combustion chamber through a pipe 22 which may lead into the pipe 21 and be provided with a perforated or rose end 23 adapted to deliver at a point above the ignition ball 'E'.
The ratio of pressure for the combustible v fluid and the combustion supporting media may be controlled in any desirable manner, not shown, so as to be constant at all times.
It will be clear from the foregoing, that when the ball is heated by a Bunseii burner or like means, it will ignite the oil which falls thereon and under the action of the combus tion supporting air introduced into the chamber, combustion will result sotliat the hot gases willbe forced downwardly through pipe l 13 into the boiler in a manner to mingle with the contents andevaporate the same for sup ply under pressure to an engine. The connection of thev boiler with an engine is not shown. n
In order to prevent excessive heating of the casing 3, forming the combustion cham-- ber, I preferably surround the same with a jacket 24 which may be secured to the boiler 1 so that a portion of the latter will form one wall of the jacket. The top of. the jacket is removable and may be in the form of lid 25 having a packing gland Q6 through which the pipe 21 is adapted to extend. An inlet pipe 27 delivers to said jacket i and may be connectedwith a source of supply of Water under pressure exceeding the pressure in the boiler l. A return pipe 28 provides for circulation of the cooling medium and is provided with a valve 29 for control of the flow thereof. In some cases, I may connect the jacket 2l with the boiler l by a pipe 30 having a valve 31.
In cases where the return connection 28 is used, the valve 3'1 will be closed and the valve 29 openedto the desired extent in accordance with the rapidity of circulation de sired. If the cooling water is to be directed into the boiler 1, valve 29 will be closed and the valve 3l open to the desired extent in accordance with the rapidity of circulation desired. In cases where the connection 30 is used the cooling. water in the jacket 24 Will be heated prior to its entrance into the boiler and will therefore function as a preheater. In any event the pressure in the jacket 24 will be sufficient to counteract the excessive internal pressure in the casing 3 so as to avoid complication in making the casing 3 heavy enough to Wholly resist internal pressure. Furthermore the water in the jacket 24 may also be controlled so that it will take up the heat from the casing 3 only to the extent desired, which result could not be obtained if the casing 3 were disposed in the boiler l.
It is one of the objects of the device of my invention to employ crude oil as a combustion fluid and it will be seen from the foregoing that practically all of' the heat units Will be utilized in steam generation thereby j wholly elin'iinatingr either loss through a smoke stack and likewise the provision of any smoke stack at all.
Furthermore` the device of my invention eliminates the necessity of tubes in the boiler together with the troublesome operations of cleaning the same afnd the deterioration which constantly takes place even when the tubes are carefuly attended.
The device of my invention will be seen to avoid practically all of' the disadvantages of steam generation as carried on at the present time, which disadvantages need not further be enumerated. y
While I have herein shown and described one form of apparatus, the method of the invention will `be clear from the description of the apparatus, and I wish it understood that I do not wish toibe limited to the disclosure fluid, a generator, a spherical combustion chamber disposed exteriorly of said generator, an inlet for supplies' of a combustible fluid and of combustion supporting media under pressure, a diametrically opposed outlet therefor, and a spherical ignition device mounted within said chamber and in symmeti-ical relation thereto to block a continuous` path through said chamber from said inlet to said outlet. l
2. In an apparatus for generating motive fluid, a generator, a spherical combustion chamber' disposed exteriorly of said generator, a pipe for conducting the products of combustion into said generator from said chamber, an inlet to supply said chamber with a combustible fluid and with combustion supporting media under pressure, a diainetrically opposed outlet connecting with Said pipe, and a spherical ignition device symmetrically mounted within said chamber to block a continuous path therethrough from inlet to outlet and to furnish also a continuous ignition of said fluid.v
3. In an apparatus for generating motive fluid, a generator, a spherical combus- 'tion chamber disposed exteriorly `of said generator, a pipe conducting the products of combustion into said generator from said chamber, an inlet to supply said chamber with a combustible fluid and with combustion supporting media under pressure, a diametrically opposed outlet for said chamber to connect with said pipe, and a spherical ignition device symmetrically disposed in said chamber, between said inlet and outlet and of a size sufficiently large to block a continuous path through to furnish also a continuous ignition of said fluid.
In an apparatus for generating motive fluid, a generator, a. pipe leading thereinto, a combustion chamber having a larger diameter than said pipe and connected thereto by an outlet, an inlet for said chamber diametrically opposed to said outlet to supply said chamber with a combustible fluid and with combustion supporting media under pressure, a hollow ignition device shaped similarly to and opening on the exterior of said chamber and symmetrically positioned therein to block a continuous path therethrough from inlet to outlet and to furnish also a continuous ignition of said fluid, and heating means for theignition device leading thereinto from Without the combustion chamber.
fluid, a generator,
said chamber and A chamber disposed exteriorly of said generator, a pipe conducting the products of combustion into said generator from said chamber, an air inlet pipe connected With said chamber, a combustible fluid inlet pipe extended into said air inlet pipe having a discharge end directed toward said combustion chamber, a spherical ignition device disposed centrally in said chamber, and a cooling chamber positioned around said combustion chamber. A
6. In an 'apparatus for generating motive Huid, a generator, a spherical combustion chamber disposed eXteriorly of said generator, said combustion chamber having diametrically opposite inlet and outlet openings, a pipe connected with said outlet openings and 'extended into said generator to conduct to the latter the products of combustion, a one-Way valve positioned m said pipe to prevent the contents of the genera- -tor from entering said pipe, an air inlet chamber, 'and means surrounding said com bustion chamber for cooling the latter.
