Be it known that I, l Vannnx E. DRESSEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Relief Devices for Acetylene-Gas Generators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to acetylene gas generators, and more particularly to means for relieving undue pressure in the gas bell or collecting chamber thereof, and this application is av division of my pending application for patent, Serial No. 11,012, filed February 27, 1915, on acetylene gas generators.
The primary object of the present invention is the provision of means for automatically relieving the volume of gas within the gas bell when the pressure has increased beyond a'predetermined degree, anda. further object is to provide mechanism which will permit the escape of gas from the gas bell when the gas bell has risen above a predetermined point.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Fig. 1 shows only so much of an acetylene gas generator constructed in accordance with my invention as is necessary for the complete understanding of my inven tion. In these figures, the numeral 2 designates the exterior tank which is closed by a cover 3. The pipe 4: having an upturned end 5 permits water to be admitted to the lower portion of the chamber and permits the removal of sludge. The passage through this pipe is controlled by a valve 8, notshown in detail.
The upper portion of the tank is divided from the lower by means of a head 9 having a downwardly extending annular wall 10 which is mounted at its lower end upon a supporting web 11. The member formed by the head 9 and the wall 10 is segmental in plan to provide space for a carbid receiving chamber 16 which has a delivery Specification of Letters Patent.

Disposed above the member 9 is a gas bell 24: having a downwardly extending circumferential wall 25 which extends into the space between the wall 10 and the wall of the tank 2 and of the chamber 16. This space is intended to be filled with water so as to seal the bell and prevent the escape of gas.
A pipe 27 extends upward from the generating chamber and opens through the member 9 and discharges into the bell 24. This pipe at its lower end is controlled by a valve so constructed that gas may be admitted from the generating chamber through the pipe 27 into the bell 24c, or gas from the chamber may be dlscharged through a discharge pipe 51. Ihe details of this valve mechanism are fully described in my pending application before referred to, of which this is a division.
In order to provide for an automatic release of gas from the bell at when the bell has risen to a predetermined height and thus prevent the lifting of the bell out of the sealing water and the consequent escape of a certain amount of gas into the upper portion of the tank, I provide a pipe 59 which is connected at its lower end to the pipe 51, or is otherwise connected to the exterior air, and which extends upward in a pocket formed between the wall 10 and the wall 25 of the gas bell. This pipe extends upward above the level of the water contained between the wall 10 and the wall 2, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
T he wall 25 of the gas bell is formed with a semi-circular wall 60, as shown most clearly in Fig. 2, which incloses the pipe 59 when the bell is in its lowered position, this wall extending up to the top of the bell. This wall 60 is not as long as the wall 25, and thus when the bell rises to the position shown in Fig. 1, the lower edge of the wall 60 will be above the water level and thus communication will be established between the pipe 59 and the interior of the bell. In other words, the water seal, which normally prevents the passage of gas into the pipe 59, will be broken. Preferably, the wall 10 is inwardly bowed, as at 61, to accommodate a pocket formed between the wall 60, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
It will be seen from the above described construction that as the gas bell rises above Patented May 1, 191.7.-
a certain predetermined point, the wall (30 will be carried above the water line. The gas seal will therefore be broken and the gas will pass from the bell into the outlet pipe 59 until the amount of gas within the ell has been sufficiently reduced so that the bell will fall, and the lower edge of the wall 60 will again dip into the water and be sealed.
It will be seen that the relief mechanism above described is particularly necessary in view of the fact that the carbid chamber 16 is disposed to One side of the gas-bell, and that in order to place carbid in the chamber the top of the generator must be opened. If it were not for the relief pipe, excess pressure of the gas would be liable to lift the bell, momentarily breaking the water seal, and that the gas would then escape into the upper portion of the generator. By my construction, however, there is no danger of the seal being broken.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In an acetylene gas generator, an exterior casing divided by a horizontal partition into a sealing chamber and a generating chamber,an annular wall extending upward from said partition into the sealing chamber and having a head at its upper end, there being communication between the generating chamber and the sealing chamber through said head, the space above said partition and between the wall and the casing being filled with sealing liquid, a gas bell disposed in the sealing chamber and having its open end surrounding'the annular wall and depending into said sealing liquid, a gas outlet pipe communicating at its lower end with the exterior of the casing and at its upper end extending upward between the annular wall and the casing and extending slightly above the downward from the head of the gas bell and at its edges engaging gas bell and forn'iing a pocket, said wall terminating at its lower end short of the lower end of the gas bell escape pipe, the annular wall being inwardly deflected at one point to accommodate the wall of the pocket and to form a guide for the bell.
