FOLDING UMBRELLA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1, 1217.
Application filed June 23, 1914. Serial No. 846,801.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, OSCAR GUGLIELMONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bronx, New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to folding umbrellas and has for its object to provide a rod consisting of a plurality of jointed sections and means for reliably locking the sections in operative position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an umbrellas which may be folded at several points and conveniently carried about in the pocket of the user.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, which will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the umbrella in open position,
Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the rod, partly broken away, showing the sections thereof in extended and unlocked position,
Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of the rod, partly broken away, showing the sections in locked position,
Fig. 4 represents a side elevation of the rod, partly broken away, showing the sections completely folded,
Fig. 5 represents a side elevation of the umbrella, partly closed and partly folded,
Fig. 6 represents an enlarged edge elevation of the rib and bracing member therefor, partly broken away,
Fig. 7 represents a side elevation of the rib and reinforcing element therefor,
Fig. 8 represents an enlarged detail view, partly broken away, of the connection between the sections of the rod,
Fig. 9 represents an enlarged detail view, partly broken away, of the sections of the rod, taken at right angles to Fig. 8, and,
Fig. 10 represents an enlarged sectional view on the line 1010 of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 11 indicates generally the rod of the umbrella consisting of three sections indicated by the numerals 12, 13 and14. The section 12 is provided with a handle 15 of any preferred shape and is provided at its opposite extremity with a reduced extension 16 having its ends bifurcated and provided with a pivot pin 17 extending through the bifurcations and projecting a distance laterally of one side of the extension. The adjacent end of the intermediate section 13 is formed with a concentric recess 18 rotatably receiving the member 19 having an inner flanged end 20 adapted to engage against the shoulder formed adjacent the outer end of the recess 18 for limiting the outward movement of the member 19. A link 21 pivotally connects the member 19 with the reduced extension 16 of the rod section 12. The section 13 is formed with a bayonet slot 22 adapted, when the sections 12 and 13 are moved together, to receive the laterally projecting end of the pin 17 to se cure said sections in extended or operative position. The opposite end of the intermediate section 13 is provided with a reduced extension l6 similar to the section 16 of the handle section 12 and is connected with the rotatable member 19 carried by the outer end section 14. The section 14 is provided with a bayonet slot 22 adapted to receive the laterally projected end of the pin 17 of the extension 16* to-lock the sections 13 and 14 in extended or operative position, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
An angular member or sleeve 23 is secured adjacent the lower extremity of the section 14 and is provided with an apertured flange 24 pivotally securing the inner ends of the inner sections 25 of the ribs. The rib sec tions 25 are pivotally connected at 26 to the outer section 27. The bracing elements 28 are pivotally connected to the inner rib sections 25 and are reduced at their inner ends to define inclined shoulders 30 and curved to provide integral hooks 30 adapted to engage within apertures 31 formed in the outwardly directed flange 32 of the sleeve 33 slidable longitudinally on the rod 11 and adapted to be engaged by a spring locking member 34 carried by the section 14 to lock the umbrella in open position.
In use, the sections of the handle are moved into an extended position and subsequently moved together and rotated to engage the projecting ends of the pins 17 and 17 in the slots 22 and 522 to lock the sections in position. The hooked ends 30 of the bracing elements 28 are engaged within the several apertures 31 of the slidable member 33 thus engaging the shoulders 230 with the member 33 and the outer rib sections 27 are moved into alinement with the inner sections 25. lhe slidable member 33 is moved toward the section 14 of the rod in the usual manner to raise the umbrella, the shoulders 30 preventing the member 33 from sliding longitudinally upon .the bracing elements 28, and is locked by the spring member 34:- To fold the umbrella the same may be lowered in the usual manner and the hooked ends 30 disengaged from the apertures in the slidable member 33. The outer rib sections 27 are subsequently turned upon the inner rib sections 25 as illustrated in Fig. 5 and the several sections of the rod rotated to disengage the pins 17 and 17 from the angularly directed ends of the slots 22 and 22. The sections of the rod are folded in .the position illustrated in Fig. d and the device when thus folded may be conveniently carried in the pocket or grip.
What I claim is:
In an umbrella, a rod formed of sections, one of the sections having a longitudinal recess therein at one end thereof, the outer end of the recess being restricted so as to provide an internal shoulder, the mentioned end of the section having one side thereof provided with a bayonet slot communicating with the recess in the section and hav ing one branch opening into the termlnal of the mentioned end of the section, an
elongated element rotatably and slidably mounted within the recess, means on the inner end of the element adapted to engage the shoulder within the recess when the element is slid outwardly so as to limit the outward movement of the element, a link having one end pivotally connected to the outer end of the element and adapted to extend into the recess in the rod section when the element is slid inwardly, an extension carried by one end of the other section of the rod and adapted to be received by the outer end of the recess in the firstmentioned section of the rod when the element and the link are inserted within the recess, and a pin pivotally connecting the other end of the link to the extension and having one terminal projecting laterally beyond one side of the extension and adapt ed to be received by the mentioned branch of the bayonet slot during the insertion of the element and extension into the recess in the first-mentioned rod section, and to be received by the other branch of the bayonet slot when the element, link and extension are fully inserted within the recess, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OSCAR GUGLIELMONE.
