"VAN THOMPSON, OF SALT LICK, KENTUCKY.
IPOULTRY-FOUNTAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 2d, i917.
Application led October 10, 1916. Serial No. 124,837.
To all wlwm t may concern.
Be it known that I, VAN THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lick, in the county of Bath and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Poultry-Fountains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in poultry fountains and has particular application to a fountain for use in shipping crates.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a poultry fountain for use in shipping crates which will embody a primary reservoir and secondary drinking compartments normally in open communication with the primary reservoir so that the same will be at all times supplied with water, wherein communication between the primary reservoir and the drinking compartments will be automatr cally cut off in the event of the tilting of the fountain, thereby preventing the water from running out of the reservoir.
With the above and other objects in view,
I the invention consists in the construction,
combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing;
Figure l is a top plan view of a drinking fountain constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same.
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view there* through.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, 1 designates a substantially rectangular casing divided by means of transverse partitions 2 into a central primary reservoir 3 and end drinking compartments 4 normally in open communication with the primary reservoir 3 by means of apertures 5 formed in the respective partitions 2 adjacent to the lower extremities thereof. The upper ends of the compartments i are open as at 6. Pivotally mounted upon the inner side of each partition 2 adjacent to thefupper end thereof is a gate check valve 7 that is spaced apart from the partition when the casing is arranged horizontally.
Under normal conditions, the water from the reservoir 3 flows through 'the apertures 5 into the compartments t so that the poultry may drink. Vhen, however, the casing is tilted, the lowermost check valve 7 swings against the partition, thereby closing the aperture 5 so as to prevent the water in the primary reservoir from flowing through the lower compartment.
While I have herein shown and described the preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claim and without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
A poultry fountain comprising a hollow substantially rectangular member having transverse partitions adjacent the ends thereof providing a central reservoir and end compartments, said end compartments having open tops, the central compartment having a ianged opening and a closure for the opening, the partitions, adjacent the lower ends thereof having openings, and gravity influenced valves located in the reservoir and pivotally secured one to each of the partitions above the openings in the partitions whereby one of said valves will contact with one of the partitions to close the opening in the said partition when the fountain is tilted from one of its ends, so as to cut oi' communication between one of the end compartments and the reservoir.
In testimony whereofI affix my signature.
VAN THOMPSON.
