Description
E. H. C. RAVN. RAIL JOINT FOR RMLWAYS. APPLICATION FILED AUG.5. 1913.
Patented Apr. 24,1917.
ERIK HANSEN CLAUSEN RAVN, OF MARSLEV, DENMARK,
RAIL-J OIN T FOR RAILWAYS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 24, 1917.
Application filed August 5, 1913. Serial No. 783,140.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERIK HANSEN CLAUSEN RAVN, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Marslev, in the Kingdom of Denmark, have invented a new and useful Rail-Joint for Railways, of Which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvement in rail-joints for railways of that kind in which the rails are slotted to receive filler blocks, preventing relative vertical movement of the ends of the rails, the fish-plate being upwardly extended t come flush with the tread of the rail.
My invention consists in constructing the fish-plate so that it not only forms part of the track but also carries the filler block, fitting in slots in the ends of the rails, and is connected with a plate which is bolted to another plate to hold the foot of the rail loosely so that on the approach of a train the fish-plate is raised and forms a track, the filler block at the same time being pressed inward, so that the rail-joint holds firmly together, and the troublesome shaking and the creeping of the rails are avoided.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the railjoint; Fig. 2 a plan, partlyin section, and Fig. 3 a transverse section.
The ends a and b of the rails are formed with incisions which together form an opening 1 which serves for the reception of a projection 2 in the form of a plate belonging to the outer fish-plate 3, so that the ends of the rails cannot move in the vertical direction. The outer fish-plate 3 is moreover extended upward and constructed as an even surface :0 that rests in an excised part 5 of the head of the rail, in order that the wheel when passing over the joint, shall be supported by the fish-plate. The joint may be supported by a tension device of suitable construction laid between two sleepers. This device may consist of plates 6 which may if necessary be inte ral with the fishplates. The plates 6 inclose the foot of the rail loosely by not being screwed firmly together thus leaving between them and the said rail base a space Fig. 3 into which the rail ends on approach of a train may sink down instantaneously causing the fish plate 3 to be relatively raised. i is the inner fishplate of a well known kind which, however, as Well as the outer fish-plate can be formed as described.
My invention may be constructed in various forms, without departing from the fundamental idea of the same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In a railjoint for railways, the combination of rails having their ends provided with incisions forming together openings 1 and 5, two fish-plates, a projection 2 belonging to one of the fish-plates and resting in said opening 1, an upward going extension of the said fish-plate forming an even upper surface 00, resting in said opening 5, and a plate 6 connected with the said fish-plate and being yoked to another plate 6, with which it meets in the middle under the foot of the rail, the two plates 6 holding the foot of the rail loosely, there being a space between them and the rail base, substantially as set forth, for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
ERIK HANSEN CLAUSEN RAVN.
