Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 5, 1916. Serial No. 107,532.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES G. KAELIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Vise, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved vise arranged to per mit the user to securely clamp the work in place without undue physical exertion and to insure a quick action of the movable jaw by reducing lost motion to a minimum. An other object is to permit convenient adjustment to compensate for wear.
In order to accomplish the desired result,
use is made of a fixed jaw, a spring-pressed.
pivoted jaw adapted to coact with the said fixed jaw, and manually controlled means for moving the said pivoted jaw bodily toward or from the said fixed jaw.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of the vise; and
Fig. 2 is a rear sectional elevation of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
The frame or body 10 of the vise is adapted to be fastened to a bench or other suitable support 11 in the usual manner, and on the said frame 10 is formed or secured a fixed jaw 12 having the usual cheek piece 13 which coacts with a similar cheek piece 1% on the movable jaw 15. The lower end of the movable jaw 15 is mounted to swing on a pivot 16 held on the depending portion 17 of the front end of a slide 18 mounted to slide in suitable guideways 19 arranged on the frame 10. The slide 18 is of inverted U- shape in cross section and into the said slide extends a nut 20 attached to or forming part of the frame 10, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. r In the nut 20 screws a screw rod 21 provided at its forward end with a nonthreaded portion 22 mounted to turn in the extension 17 of the slide and in the pivoted jaw 15. The outer end of the portion 22 of the screw rod 21 is provided with a head 28 bearing against the outer face of the pivoted jaw 15, and the said head 23 is provided with a suitable handle 24 to permit the operator to conveniently turn the screw rod 21 with a view to move the jaw 15 toward or from the fixed jaw 12 according to the direction in which the screw rod 21 is turned at the time. The inner end of the portion 22 of the screw rod 21 is provided with a screw-thread 25 onwhich screws a nut 26 abutting against the back of the extension 17 of the slide 18 and the said nut 26 is locked in place by a jam nut 27 screwing on the threaded portion 25. Between the pivoted jaw 15 and the front face of the extension 17 of the slide 18 is interposed a spring 30, preferably in the form of a coil spring, seated in a socket 31 formed on the back of the pivoted jaw 15. By the arrangement described the jaw 15 is pivoted and spring-pressed so as to yield relatively to the work when engaging or disengaging the same and independent of the'bodily movement given to the jaw 15 on moving the latter toward or from the movable jaw 12 on moving the slide 18 rearward or forward according to the direction in which the handle 24 is turned. In case of wear, the jam nut 27 can be readily retracted and the nut 26 screwed up to compensate for lost motion, incident to the wear on the portion 22, the jaw 15 and the slide 18' on which the jaw 15 is pivoted.
When it is desired to close the vise for clamping a part between the jaws 12 and 15 then the handle 24 is turned so that the screw rod 21 screwing in the fixed nut 20 moves rearwardly and in doing so the threaded portion 22 of the screw rod 21 carries the slide 18 and the movable jaw 15 along. When the jaw 15 engages the part held between the jaws 12 and 15 and the screw rod 21 is turned farther, then the spring 30 is compressed and the jaw 15 moves gradually into clamping engagement with the part to securely clamp the same in place between thecheek pieces 13 and 14 of the jaws 12 and 15. When it is desired to release the clamped part then the handle 24- is turned in a reverse direction to that of the screw rod 21 whereby the slide 18 is moved forward and with it the jaw 15. The latter now by the force of its spring 30 gradually moves out of engagement with the part owing to the jaw having an independent swinging movement on the slide 18.
It will be noticed that by the arrangement described it does not require much physical exertion on the part of the operator for securely clamping the part between the jaws 12 and 15.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
- 1. In a vise, a fixed jaw, a movable jaw adapted to coact with the said fixed jaw, a slide having a depending portion at its forward end and on which .portion the said slide on which the said movable jaw is pivoted to swing toward and from the fixed jaw, a spring interposed between the said movable jaw and slide, a fixed nut, and a screw rod screwing in the said nut and engaging the said slide and the movable jaw for serving as a common actuating means for both.
3. In a vise, a fixed jaw, a movable jaw adapted to coact with the said fixed jaw, a slide having a depending portion at its forward end and on which portion said movable jaw is pivoted to swing toward or from the fixed jaw, a spring interposed between the said movable jaw and the slide, a fixed nut, and a screw rod screwing in the said nut and having a non-threaded portion turnable in the said slide and in the said movable jaw, the said non-threaded portion having collars, of which one bears on the back of the depending portion of the slide and the other bears against the front of the said pivoted aw.
4. In a vise, the combination of a fixed jaw, a slide, a movable jaw pivoted on the slide, a spring interposed between the said movable jaw and the slide, and a common manually controlled means engaging the said slide and the movable jaw to advance or retract both of them.
5. In a vise, the combination of a fixed jaw, a slide movable relatively thereto, a spring-pressed jaw pivotally mounted on the slide adapted to coact with the said fixed. jaw, and a common manually controlled means for actuating both the slide and he said pivoted j aw relatively to the fixed jaw.
