CLOSURE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1'7, 191?.
Application filed May 1, 1915. Serial No. 25,209.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. lVILHELM, a citizen of the United States, residing at l l ashington, District of Columbia, have invented a new and useful Closure, of Which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in closures for boxes, in which a double faced box lid is connected by projections on the corners of the box lid, and engaging sliding tracks on the ends of the box, which will perinit the box lid to slide to both sides of the box and rotate at any position therein, and reverse the box lid.
The objects of my improvements are first to provide a means permitting a box lid to be opened from eitherside of the box.
Second, to afford facilities for the reversal of the double faced box lid so when the box is used as a shipping crate the shippers name can be on one side of the lid and the consignee on the other side.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1, is a box with the closure attached, cleats and corner clips. Fig. 2, shows sectional view of the box with the box lid attached and projection allowed by the short slots shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3, shows an enlarged vertical section of sliding track.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Cleats 1 are secured to the opposite ends of the box and extending above the walls of the box the thickness of the double faced box lid 9.
The reciprocating sliding tracks 2 are each made from a piece of strap metal the length of cleats 1 and each has a longitudinal semi-circular indented back 8 and one long slot 3 central in the indenture' 8 with two or more short slots 4: on each side of the indenture parallel with the long slot 3.
The long slot 3 is not quite the length of the sliding track 2 as a small part of each end of the track must be left solid to hold the track together.
The sliding tracks 2 are slidingly, at-
tached by the lugs 5 that pass through the short slots 4 and their ends are secured to the cleats l to allow the sliding tracks 2 to slide the full length of short slots 4.
The corner clips 6 are pieces of metal to aid in securing the projections 7 and rein- 1ftlrce the corners of the double faced box The projections 7 pass through the long slots 3 and secure the sliding tracks 2 to box lid 9 by heads that freely slide in the indenture 8, these projections being rotatable at any position in the slots 3 and slidable in opposite directions the full length of the long slots 3. The extension allowed by the short slots 4 carries the projections 7 over the front or back walls of the box permitting the box lid to drop parallel to the back or front of the box. The indenture 8 in the back of the sliding track 2 is a groove to receive the head on the projection 7 and permitting the same to slide freely therein, and not come in contact with a cleat 1.
I claim- 1. A closure adapted to the use of boxes comprising tracks on the ends of the box, and a double faced box lid with projections on the opposite corners of the said lid, the said projections engaging the tracks and rotatable therein the said tracks adapted to shift to extend beyond either the front or rear of the box as desired providing the means for the said projections to slide and Iriarry the box lid to the opposite side of the 2. A closure adapted to the use of boxes comprising reciprocating sliding tracks movable beyond the front and rear of the box and a slidable double faced box lid, projections on the opposite corners of the said lid engaging the said sliding tracks and freely rotatable at any position in the said tracks providing the means for opening the box lid by a sliding or a rotatable action from either side of the box and reversing the box lid.
