To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, DAVID SHERWOOD KEN NEDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and stored in a magazine, are released therefrom by the manipulation of the keyboard mechanism, are assembled in line and then presented to a mold, wherein the slug or linotype is cast. After this, the matrices are distributed and restored to the magazine from which they started.
In the ordinary form of distributer, the matrices are caused to pass along a grooved rail or bar until they reach the proper maga zine channels, into which they drop in the manner -well understood in the art. It some times happens that a matrix will not drop directly thereintd'but is displaced or tilted to such an extent that it is caught and held, ordinarily in the channel entrance. This tilting or failure of the matrices to drop directly is caused in several ways, but chiefly by the fact that just at the moment they are released from the grooves of the' distributer rail, there is a tendency for them to pivot or swing about their supporting teeth, and this tendency is emphasized and increased in the case of the thicker matrices, whose teeth are permit the disengagement of the matricestherefrom at the proper points, thus insuring their delivery in a straight line and directly into the magazine entrance and magazine.
I have illustrated my invention as applied to an extremely large or thick matrix, but obviously it can also be adapted to matrices of smaller size, and many other changes and variations may be made therein, and in its mode of application, which will still be comprised within its spirit. Similarly, the invention may be adapted to type, or dies, as well as to matrices. Generally speaking,'I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to any specific form or embodiment,
except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 shows a portion of a distributer bar and my improved matrices cooperating therewith; and
Figs. 2, 3 and 4; are respectively perspective, sectional, and top views of the matrix itself.
The matrix X, which is'of the thick or display variety, is formed between the side faces thereof with the usual toothed web or combination X of lessthickness than the body portion. However, in the present instance it will be noted that the teeth or web is located above and in the same vertical plane with the center of gravity of the matrix, as best shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4.

Due to the described locationof the toothed combination X with reference to the center of gravity and other portions of the matrix, the tendency to tilt is 0bviated, and as the matrices arrive at the corresponding combinations on the bar, they pass therefrom directly and in vertical planes into the underlying channels.
As previously stated, I have shown my invention only in, preferred form and in a special application, but obviously many modifications and alterations therein, and in its mode of adaptation, will suggest themselves to those skilled'in the art, without de parture from its scope.

claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as, follows 1. An integral type or matrix formed,
combination will be in the same vertical line.
2. An integral type or matrix having distributing teeth formed in a portion of less thickness than that of its body and definitely located in a plane passing through its center of gravity, whereby the matrix when suspended by such distributing teeth Will be in 15 a direct verticalplane and in alinement with the plane of the teeth.
