Be it known that I, FRANK M. PIERCE,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and awful Improvements in ing drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention constitutes a divisional application of my co-pending application for tire wrapping machines, filed October 3rd, 1914, Serial No. 864,735.
This invention relates to a carrying means for paper on the revoluble type of shuttle used in high speed wrapping machines for annular or other articles required to be inserted through the eye of the shuttle to receive a wrapper applied thereon.
In this type of Wrapping machine a reel of the wrapping material is generally mounted upon a suitable spindle on the shuttle from which the strip is unwound and at times when-the machine is'operating at high speed and is brought to a sudden stop after. the completion of a wrappin' operation the reelxof wrapping materia tends to continue rotation so that the overtravel causes an excess of paper to be un- This invention, "however, relates to a Imechanism adapted to receive a reel of wrapping material inserted thereon without requiring adjustment of the parts and act;

It is an object therefore of this invention to construct a reel carrying device embracing resilient friction means for contact with the inner layer of thepaper of the reel to prevent overtravel of the reel ofpaper as the reel is rotated to unwind'the paper therefrom. Y

It is also an object of this invention to" construct a. paper carrying device for a revolving shuttle on high speed wrapping machines embracing a spindle having a plu-' rality of resilient members associated therewith toenga'ge the reel of paper to hold the same in position thereon and to prevent overtravel ofthe reel as the same is rotated to unwind the paper therefrom.
It is furthermore an important object of this invention to construct a paper carrying device comprising a disk having a spindle projecting centrally therethrough and provided with a sleeve slotted to receive resilient means engaged therewith for contact with a reel of paper inserted on the device to act as a friction brake to prevent spinning of the reel as the same is rotated to unroll the paper therefrom.
It is finally an object of this invention to construct a paper carrying device for a reel of paper provided with resilient frictionally acting means to prevent over-rotation of the reel as the paper is drawn therefrom.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

As shown in the drawings:
The shuttle consists of a main section 1, -and a supplementary section 2, plvotally connected therewith adapted to be locked to said main section by a locking device 3, to afford a closed ring. Mounted on the front surface of the main section 1, through an aperture Inserted over the outer end of said spindle t, is a sleeve 8, which on diametriml ly opposite sides is coredout to afi'ord slots 9.
provided for the purpose, is a: bolt 4, affording a spindle bein secured on place upon the spindle, a cap 10, is provided mounted onthe end of the spindle and held secured thereon by means of a bolt 11, threaded into the spindle. Mounted in the slots 9, of said sleeve are a pair of leaf springs or resilient members 12, which are compressed almost entirely into the slots 9, when a reel of paper 13, is inserted thereover. Said resilient members bear frictionally against the inner layer of paper of the reel in a manner to permit rotation of the reel as the strip of paper is drawn therefrom and yet acting to prevent overtravel or spinning of the reel when the machine is suddenlyystopped. The strip drawn from the reel of paper 13, is first led through a tension device 14:, then through a folder plate 15, finally arounda creasing roller 16, and thence to ,the article being wrapped.
I am aware that other means falling well within the scope of my invention may be used for obtaining the results achieved by my device, but I do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described the combination with a shuttle of a spindle mounted thereon, a collarintegrally formed on said spindle, a supporting disk secured thereto, a sleeve on said spindle resting on said disk and having slots therein, resilient meansengaging in said slots of said sleeve,
and means for retaining said sleeve upon said spindle and adapted to receive a reel of paper inserted thereover to compress said resilient means whereby the same acts as a brake for the reel of paper to prevent spinning thereof on the device.
2. In a device of the class described a spindle, a collar integral therewith, a disk secured thereon, a sleeve on said spindle resting on said disk, a cap retaining said sleeve on said spindle, and resilient means engaged with said spindle adapted to contact the inner layer of a reel of paper mounted on said device to prevent spinning thereof thereon and yet permitting rotation of said reel on the device.
8. In a paper carrying device of the class described the combination of a shuttle and a spindle rigidly secured therein, a disk rigid on said spindle, a sleeve resting thereon having slots therein, a cap mounted on the outer end of said spindle and sleeve, a
bolt projecting througli said cap and thread-' ed into said spindle to hold the sleeve in position, and a pair of resilient members disposed in said slots in opposite sides of said spindle acting to contact a reel of paper inserted on the device to prevent spinning of the reel thereon.
