ALTERNATE DRTVING-GEARING FOR reaches.
l Application led December 6, 1916. Serial No. 135,389.
nate Driving-Gearing for Freezers, of which the following is a specification.
y invention is an improvement in ice cream freezers, and has for its object to provide a devicev of the character specied wherein a tub is provided having the usual container mounted therein, and provided with stirring mechanism, and wherein means is provided for rotating' the container and the'stirring mechanism in opposite directions, orotherwise, with high power and low speed, or with low 4power and'high speed, the said rotating means/being capable of being used simultaneously or alone.
1n the drawing is shown a vertical section through the improved freezer.
1n the present embodiment of the invention a tub 1 is provided ofi usual construction, having on the bottom thereof and at the center, a step bearing 2,' the said bearing consisting 4of a plate or disk secured to the bottom in any usual or desired manner, and having a central socket. The can or container 3 of the usual forni, is provided with a cover 4:, having a depending dange 5 adapted to ht about the top of the can and having an inwardly extending lug 6 for engaging a notch l in the can, or having a downward extending' lug to engage an inward extending lug in the topjof the can,
to constrain the can to rotate with the cover. This-'cover is provided with a 'central bearing 8, for a purpose to be presently described, and concentric series 9 and 10 of bevel gear teeth, the series 10. radius than the teeth 9.
A cover 11 is provided for the tubf, the said cover resting' upon\the`top of the tub being of less 'and having a depending marginal dange 12` approaching the cover d justoutside of the series 9 of gear teeth. This cover has radial bearings 13 and 141, swhich 'are in register, and which are adapted to receive shafts 15 and 16 respectively. lThe. outer and the inner ends of both shafts` 1.5 and.16 are coarsely threaded, and bevel `gears 17 and 18 are threaded onto the inner ends of 'the said shafts. The bevel. gear 17 engages the `series 9 of teeth, while the bevel gear 18 A engages the series10 of teeth, and it will be Specification of Letters Patent.
raten-teu nai, er, reir.'
evident that by turning either shaft, the .can may be ro'tated.
The stirrlng .mechanism consists of a shaft. 19 which 1s journaled in the bearing 8 of bottom of the container, and this shaft has stirring blades or vanes 20 and 21 respectively. The container is provided with a journal pin 32, which isjournaled in the .step bearing 38 on the bottom of the tub.
The upper end of the shaft which extends beyond the cover 1-is polygonal in cross section and reduced, as indicated at 22, and
a double bevel gear wheel 23 is provided With the stem 24 having an opening shaped to fit the portion 22 and receive the same. This double bevel-gear 23 has-a series of teeth 25 meshing 'with the bevel-gear 17, and another series 26 ,meshing with the bevel-gear 18, that is the series 25 -of teeth has the same radius as the series 9 of gear teeth on the cover t, while the series 26 has `'the same radius as the Vseries 10.
The double bevel-gear also has an axial socket 27 which is adapted to receive a journal pin 28 dependingfrom the cover 11. This cover 11 has an upward extension 29 forming a chamber for receiving the double bevel-gear 23,- and the journal pin is` atV are driven in opposite directions, and be\ cause of the gearing connectionbetween the `shafts and the container and stirringmechanism, the shaft 15 gives lower seed and greater power than does the sha" 16. Tf desired, cranks may be connected with both shafts, and persons of unequal strength, as for instance children of di'erent ages, may operate simultaneously on the. freezer. Where there is but a single operator, be will asa rule, commence the freezing operation with the shaft 16, and when the cream becomes thick `and sticky and dicult to stir, he may change the crank-to the shaft 15, thus obtaining greater power, or a Hywheel may be attached to either shaft.
With the improved freezer the high and the cover and in a bearing 8a in the ice low power is always immediately available, .v
requiring only the change of a crank, or if two cranks are used, requiring no change whatever. Either crank may be readily removed by holding it still and turning the other. In addition, the churning or stirring of the cream may be continued through the critical last moments of the freezing. lt will be noticed from an inspection of the drawing that the lower end of the pin 32 is pointed or tapered and that this Said lower end 'rests upon disks 30 which are arranged within the socket of the step bearing.v By .increasing the number of the disks, the can 3 may be lifted to insure a tight t between the gears 9 and 17 and the gears 10 and 18. The downwardly projecting stud or journal pin 28 from the center of the top cover, affords a very rigid support, and by providing disks indicated at 31, between the bottom of the said stud or journal pin and the bottom of the socket, wear may be compensated for. When the gears becomeworn, a. disk may be added. The parts are also easily lubricated. The cover 11 is clamped to the tub in any usual or desired manner.
- I claim:
1. A gearing consisting of a vertical shaft, a gear wheel connected thereto to turn therewith and having annular series of teeth of unequal diameter, a second gear wheel journaled below the first in spaced relation and having series of teeth similarly disposed with respect to the teeth of the first-named wheel, gear wheels connecting I the corresponding series of teeth, and means for turning the said wheels, said second named gear wheel being connected with an object to rotate the same.
'L 2. A gearing comprising vertically spaced gear wheels, each Wheel having annular series of gear teeth of unequal diameter, gear wheels arranged with their planes perpendicular to the planes of the first-named wheels and connecting the corresponding Series of teeth of 'the wheels, and means for turning each of the last-named wheels, each WADE HAMPTON STEMPLE.
