CHRISTINE SCHWA'RZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GARMENT-RETAINER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 27, 1917.
Application filed November 9, 1914. Serial No. 871,063.
To all to]: am it may concern:
. Be it known that I, CHRISTINE SoHwAnz,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar1nent-Retainers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in garment retainers for women and more specifically to a device designed to adapt the same, when worn, to retain the waist band of the skirt and petticoat of the wearer in proper position.
A further object is the production of a device as mentioned, which will be of simple construction and eiiicient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a garment retainer embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line w-w of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the rear plate of the device detached.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a belt 1 adapted, when the device is in use, to en circle the waist of the wearer. Interposed in said belt is a suitable buckle 2 whereby the same may be adjusted to snugly embrace the waist of the wearer. Provided at the front side of belt 1 is a metallic plate 3 having slots 4 at its opposite edges for engagement with the adjacent ends of said belt, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Formed at the upper edge of the plate 2 is .a hook 5 adapted, when the device is in use, to engage over the waist band of the skirt of the wearer in order to hold the same against upward slipping. Also formed at the no per edge of plate 3 at either side of hook 5 are smaller hooks 6 positioned below said hook 5, the hooks 6 being adapted for engagement with the waist band of the petticoat of the wearer also, in order to prevent the same slipping upwardly.
Depending from the plate 3 1s a strap 7 provided at its lower end with aslotted end piece or engaging plate 8 adapted for engagement with any one of the headed studs usually provided at the front side of a corset. The upper end of the strap 7 passes through spaced slots 9 and 10 which are formed in the plate 3 adjacent the lower edge thereof, said end of said strap being releasably secured to said plate by means of pointed fingers 11 which are provided at the upper edge of the slot 10. Said fingers are so arranged that downward pull upon the strap 7 will cause the upper end thereof to bedrawn into engagement with the fingers 11 and thus be automatically locked in position. Also, with this arrangement it will be seen that adjustment of the effective length of strap 7 may be secured by simply pulling downwardly upon the upper end thereof, it being clear that, when said end has been adjusted to the position desired, and the lower end of strap 7 is pulled downwardly, the fingers 11 will automatically engage with said strap, to lock the same in adjusted position. With this arrangement, it will be seen, that two adjustments are afforded for determining the vertical position of plate 3, namely, the adaptability of the end member 8 engaging with any one of the vertically spaced studs of the corset of the wearer, and the adjustment which is afforded the strap 7 to regulate the effective length thereof. This being so, it will be seen, that when the device is in use, the same may be readily and easily adjusted to hold the skirt and petticoat waist bands at the front down to any position desired.
Provided at the rear of the belt 1 is an elongated rectangular plate 1 having slots 13 at the ends thereof for the passage of said belt. The plate 12 afiords means for engagement with hooks or other engaging devices which may be provided at the rear of the skirt or petticoat in order to support the latter and prevent sagging.
While I have illustrated anddescribed the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into efiect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction setforth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I 10 portion of said plate, and side hooks formed "Q I p 1,220,896
at the upper side portions of said plate at a lower level than said central hook, substantially as described.
In -testinio'n'y 'iv'h'e'reof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 15 two subscribing Witnesses.
