DIMMER .ATTACHMENT FOR AUTOMOBILE-LAMPS. i
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 27, 191'?.
Application led March 2, 1915. Serial No. 11,557.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. WooLLA- ooTT, a citizen of the United States, residingat Los Angeles, in the county of Inos Angeles and State of California, have 1nvented a new and useful Dimmer Attachment for Automobile-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for preventing the glare from high power automobile lamps.
Various means have been employed for this purpose and an object ofthis invention is to provide cheap, simple and effective means which are attachable to and detachable from the automobile lamp with great ease and facility, so that they can be conveniently attached for use at -such times as the glare may be objectionable and can be as conveniently and readily removed when it is desired to use the lamp with full glare as on country roads.
This invention is applicable to automobile lamps having an incandescent electric luminary and may be made of'diferent sizes for satisfactory application to said lamps.
The invention may be applicable to other than electric lamps.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure 1 is a broken sectional elevation 0f an automobile lamp provided with' one of the dimmer attachments in place.
Fig. 2 is a view of the Idimmer attachment detached.
In the drawings the bulb 1 and incandescent film 2 of the luminary may be of any Well-known construction and the same is fastened in the usual way to the reflector 3 of the lamp which may or may not be provided at the front with a glass door 4 through which the rays ofthe lamp are emitted. The parts of the lamp thus described are all of any usual construction.
@opten of this patent may be obtained for -the lamp;
The shield 7 is fiat and the arms 8 extending therefrom may be connected to the lamp isran open resilient ring adapted to spring 1 out against and to conform to the interior of said frame.
- The dimmer can be applied and removed from the lamp with great ease and expedition, thus allowing the lamp to be dimmed and undimmed as occasion may require.
The shield is preferably made of aluminum or other suitable material and may or may not be provided with4 a back reflecting surface and may intercept only so much of the light as is emitted directly forward.
, The reflector is of such character that the rays reiected therefrom are not objectionable.
I claim: v
A dimming attachment for an automobile lamp having a reflector, said attachment t comprising a light obscuring shield ofI such diameter as to interrupt the direct forwardv rays from the luminary and to allow the lamp to emit the rays from the reflector, an open resilient ring conforming to the interior of the lamp frame, arms extending from opposite sides of the shield and connecting with the ring, said resilient ring being adapted to spring out against the interior of sald lamp frame and thus hold the shield centrally in front of the luminary of AIn testimony. whereof, I` have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California, this 24th dayfof February 1915.
ALBERT H. WooLLAooTT.
