structing concrete buildings, and such other concrete devices as Arequire cross rods for securing the forms or molds.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved form of rod puller for removing the temporary rods or stays used for holding concrete molds or forms together when the concrete is being placed therein and while it is setting; to provide such a device adapted for withdrawing the rods without bending, when pulling them out of the concrete, and having a rectilinear pull when operated; to provide automatic means of ratchet-like character for gripping a rod successively as it is being drawn out; to provide automatic means for urging the clamp jaws to their closed position, and for restoring the clamp and handle to their retracted position ready for the next opera-` tion; and to provide for powerful leverage action adapted to facilitate manual operation of the device when the rods are held tightly in the concrete.
An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the rod puller in its normal position.

Fig. 4 is a section on the line A-A of Fig. 1, showing mainly a plan of the device.
Fig. 5 is a section on the lineVB-B of Fig. 3, and shows the device applied to the end of a stay rod projecting from a concrete wall.
Fig. 6 is a section on the line B-B of Fig. 3, showing the device attached to a stay rod and with the mechanism in its eX- tended or forward position.
In the construction shown in the drawings, the rod puller comprises mainly a frame 1, a clamp 2 slidable thereon forward and backward, a lever 3 connected operatably to said frame and said clamp for reciprocating the latter, link means 4 operatively connecting said lever and clamp, and resilient yielding means 5 connecting said frame and clamp for restoring the latter. The frame 1 is formed with a broad back or foot 6 for bearing against the face of the concrete7 from which the rods 8 are to be pulled, and a guide part including a pair of arms orV side rails 9 for said clamp to ride upon, and projecting from said back at a right angle. ' The clamp 2 comprises a pair of jaws 10 and 11, the former being slidably connected to said rails 9 and the other jaw 11 being mounted swingably as at 14 on the short arm 15 of a lever 16 which is fulcrumed on a pair of arms or brackets 18 on the jaw 10. Said jaw 11 is pivoted medially of its front and rear ends to said lever arm 15 and swings self-adjustably opposite jaw 10, so as to clamp automatically against the rod to be pulled. The lever 16 has a handle arm 15, by swinging which inward the clamp may be released. The short arm 15 is inclined forwardly from the fulcrum pivot 20 toward the clamp jaws, and the long arm or release handle 15projects oppositely. The retractive movement or closure of jaw 11 is limited-by stop means, as
.a shoulder 21 on the jaw 10, against which shoulder the arm 15 coacts normally.
The said clamp is formed with a hollow or trough to receive the rod 8, for which purpose one ofthe jaws is apertured from front to back as shown at 22 in Figs. 3 and 5. One of said jaws is provided with inclined forwardly facing teeth on its active side, as shown at 25 on Figs. 1, 5 and 6, for ratchet-like or step-by-step action on the rod 8, as the clamp is worked back and forth in pulling the rod.
The back or`foot 6 is apertured at 27 in alinement with said jaws, to receive the rod 8, so that when the rod puller is applied by placing the frame 1 over the rod theL end of the latter will feed automatically between the jaws. Said rod will be gripped automatically by the ratchet teeth, except when released manually by turning the lever arm 15 backward, as may be done to remove the rod from the clamp when it has been pulled free of the concrete.
The guide rails 9 and sliding jaw 10 are formed with horizontally disposed coacting slots 29 and shoulders or trunnions 30.
at its forward end to the rear part of jaw' 10, as to the aw lugs '35 through which the pin 33 passes, and at its rear end to the operating lever 3 at 36 adjacent to its fulcrum or fixed pivot axis 37 and intermediate of the lever ends. The fulcrum end of lever 3 is forked and one of said links is pivoted to each arm as shown by Figs. 3 and 4. By this construction great strength and rigidity is provided, and lateral binding or crowding of the clamp 2 against the frame 1 is avoided. As the handle part of lever 3 is relatively long, great force may be broughtk to bear upon the rod for pulling the same. Moreover, as the lever 3 swings forward there is a toggle action effected by the links 4 and the fulcrum end of lever 3 whereby the force applied manually to the handle is still further multiplied.
Combined jaw closing and clamp restoring means are provided comprising resilient yielding means in the form of the helical spring 5, one end of which is connected to the clamp, preferably to the rear part of the pivoted jaw, as at 41, and the opposite end of which is attached to a substantially stationary part of the device, as to the back of the frame at the point 42.
By this construction and arrangement the device is held rigidly and stably against the concrete during the pulling operation, and a rectilinear pull only is applied to the rod longitudinally of its length, whereby it is withdrawn without bending or twisting, and may therefore be used repeatedly.
The operation of the rod puller is as follows: The device as a whole is applied to the projecting end of the rod by sliding the apertured back of the frame over the rod and causing the tip of the rod to slide under the yielding jaw 11 where it is gripped by the ratchet-like teeth. The broad bearing foot is brought to bear stably against the concrete 7 in which the stay rod is embedded. The handle 3 is then pulled forward manually and a powerful leverage and toggle action is brought to bear upon the rod, sufficient to draw the same forward. The handle is then swung backward and forward repeatedly until the rod is entirely withdrawn, each forward movement serving to move the rod step-by-step to a greater or less extent according to the swing of the handle 3.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention is herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
1. A rod puller, comprising a frame-having a foot part for bearing against the object from which the rod is to be pulled, and guide means standing outward therefrom, in combination with a clamp carried by said guide means, manual means for moving said clamp on said guide means, and automatic means forclosing the same, said clamp comprising a jaw mounted slidably on said guide means and connected to said manual means, and having a pair of spaced parallel brackets, a lever pivoted medially to said brackets and a complementary jaw pivoted medially on one arm of said lever, said arm being nearly perpendicular to the sliding jaw, but inclined outward from its fulcrum when said clamp is closed to its normal position.
2. A rod puller comprising a frame having a transversely disposed guide arm carried by a base part which is adapted to rest upon the object from which the rod is to be pulled, said base part having a recess formed therein whereby said part is adapted to embrace the rod to be pulled, a member reciprocatingly mounted on said arm, a pair of jaws carried on said member and arranged with their gripping faces substantially in axial alinement with said recess, and a lever pivoted on said frame and connected so as to reciprocate said member.
3. A rod puller, comprising a frame having a pair of parallel guide armsV perpendicularly supported on a base part which is adapted to rest upon an object from which the rod is to be pulled, said base part having a recess formed therein between said arms, whereby said part is adapted to embrace the rod to be pulled, a member reciprocatingly mounted on and between said arms, a pair of jaws carried on said member and arranged with their gripping faces disposed substantially in axial alinement with said recess, and a lever pivoted on said frame and connected so as to reciprocate said member.
4. A rod puller, comprising a frame having a pair of parallel guide arms perpendicularly supported on a base part which is adapted to rest upon an'object from which the rod is to be pulled, said base part having a recess formed therein between said arms, whereby said part is adapted to embrace the rod to be pulled, a member reciprocatingly mounted on and between said arms and having a jaw, a lever pivoted on said frame and connected to reciprocate said member, a second lever pivotally mountbase so as to urge said second jaw toward ed on said member, a jaw pivotaliy mountsaid rst jaw and at the same time urge ed on said second lever and opposed to the said member into a retracted position toward 10 jaw on said member, the gripping faces said base.
