Description

'U4-811 D'Ewm' c. HOWELL.
Improvement in Se ctional Steam 'Generators... No. 122,019. l/ Pmmed oec.19,1s71.
I fsa MWL .l l
@Hummm UNrrEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DEWI'IT O. HOWELL, OF GOSHEN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SECTIONAL STEAM-GENERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,019, dated December 19, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEWITT C. HOWELL, of Goshen, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Steam-Generator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which Will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speciiication.
My invention relates to the manufacture of steam-generators, as hereinafter fully described and as subsequently pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawingI `igure l isa vertical longitudinal section of the generator taken on the line .r .r otl Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of Fig. l taken on the line y y. Fig. 3 is a front end elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the generating-tubes, which are arranged in tiers in an inclined'position, so that they cross each other, as seen in Fig. 1. There maybe more or less in number of these tiers, and more or less tubes in each tier, and the tubes may be of any desired length a-nd diameter, and the tubes of each tier may be placed, as regards each other, nearer together or further apart, as may be deemed best. B and O are the heads or tube-sheets, which may be made in sections, so that the generator may be made wider and more capacious, or smaller, as may be required. D represents return-chambers; each chamber D (above the two lower chambers) receives the water from two tiers of tubes, which tiers conduct the water in opposite directions, as indicated by the arrows. These chambers are attached to the heads B and C by means of bolts or screws, and are packed or fitted to a steam-joint with the heads. These chambers may be of any suitable form, either angular, as seen,'or semicircular or other form, as may be desired. E represents return-tubes connected with the upper and the lower chambers D, as seen in Fig.` l. The feed-water is pumped into one or both of the two lower chambers D,and is forced up through the different tiers of tubes, as indicated by the arrows; but
it will be noticed that the water Vwhich starts from the chambers of one head is returned to the lower cham ber of the other head by means ofthe return-tubes Er; The steam generated is discharged into the two upper chambers ff through the two upper tiers of superheating tubes G G, and finds its way into the steam-drum H through the steam-pipes I I. K is the furnace; L, the grate. M is the furnace'door. N and O are diaphragms placed between the tiers of tubes for controlling and regulating` the passage ot' the products of combustion among the tubes. l? P are vertical partitions in the steam-drum H, against which the currents of steam or steam and water (in case of foaming) impinges as it is discharged into the drum. Any water which may be carried over through the pipes I I will, on striking the partitions, fall by its own gravity and settle in the bottom of` the drum. A pipe may extend from the bottom of the drum and connect with the feed-water pipe for conducting ott' this water. It is an outside vertical tube connectin g with the steam and water spaces of the generator, so that` the water therein will not be materially affected by the motion of the water in the generating-tubes. The gauge-cocks S are placed in this tube. The front end of the generator is stationary, and fixed in position by the front archplates.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The two sets of inclined Steamgenerating tubes A crossing each other, combined, as described, with opposite chambers D, connected at top and bottom by return-tubes E, so that the same water will alternately pass through the two sets of generating-tubes and be kept in continual circulation until converted into steam.
2. The upper chambers D D, combined, as described, with ascending pipes Gr and descending pipes E to allow the vaporized and unvaporized water to be separated and conveyed to their respective destinations.
The above specifica-tion of my invention signed by me this 19th day of September, 1871.
Witnesses: DEWITT C. HOWELL.
