Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 20, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY D. Es'rEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Ohio and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Propellers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in propellers for motor and power boats and especially with reference to the provision of a propeller embodying blades which may be readily adjusted to any desired pitch and may be readily secured in position. j
The object of the invention is to provide an improved propeller of this kind which can be adapted to the power and speed of the motor and secure the best possible re sults.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation partly in section of an adjustable propeller constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the plane indicated by the line a-ct of Fig. 1.
My improved propeller comprises a hub 1 and a suitable number of adjustable blades 2. As here shown, the propeller is provided with three blades, but any suitable number of blades may be employed.
Each blade is here shown as comprising a disk 3, and a radial arm 4. Each arm has a cylindrical inner portion 5, which fits and is adapted to turn in a radial opening 6 in the hub, and is also provided with an annular groove 7. The hub is provided in' addition to the radial opening 6, with openings 8 which are parallel with the axis of the hub and each of which has a widened rear portion 9 which communicates with one of the openings 6.
Should a blade break or become injured,
it may be readily removed and, either repaired or replaced. Hence the propeller may be repaired without the necessity of removing the same from the shaft.
-.By the construction of the propeller blades so that each comprises a disk and an arm, and also by the adjustable arrangement of the propellers with respect to the hub, the entire superficial area of each blade is availed of as propelling surface, there is no twisted portion of any part of the propeller and the friction in the water is reduced to the minimum. My improved propeller may be made of any suitable material and is exceedingly strong and durable.
' Having described theinvention, what is claimed is: 1
In a propeller, in combination with a hub having a substantially radial opening and also having an opening at an angle to and communicating at one point with the first named opening,'a blade having an arm arranged in the radial opening of the hub and adapted to turn therein to adjust the blade to any desired pitch, and a locking bolt extending through said opening and having a widened wedge-shaped head presentinga curved shoulder at a point intermediate the ends of said bolt and which shoulder engages the arm of the blade, and a nut screwed on said-bolt at the end opposed to the shoulder, said nut bearing against the hub.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' HENRY D. ESTES.
Witnesses:
