Description

CHARLES BARRETT.
'lmprovement in Dumping Cars.
N0. 121,9 3' W690i Patented Dec-19,1871;

PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES BARRETT, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DUMPlNG-CARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,981, dated December 19, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BARRETT, at present doing business in Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts,have made an invention of certain Improvements in Railway Dumping-Cars; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my said invention, due reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2 is a rear end elevation; and Fig. 3is a vertical and transverse section of a car embodying my improvements, the latter section being prpj ected through the supporting shaft or pivot of the dumpingbox or hod to be explained.
The drawing accompanying this specification represents, at A, a platform-car, of ordinary construction, with the exception of its length and whereof a a, 850., are the wheels; b b, the axles; and c, the platform. B represents an open rectangular frame, of a width and length about equal to that of the platform 0, and within the forward part of which a horizontal shaft, d, is mounted, the journals ff of this shaft protruding beyond the side bars of the frame sufficiently far to enter ears e e, which depend from the under side or bottom of a rectangular box or hod, C, the shaft and ears serving to support the box in position, and permit it to be tilted into an inclined position for the purpose of discharging its contents. Thejournalsff should be disposed somewhat forward of the center of gravity of the dumping-box C, in order that its rear end shall overbalance the forward end for the pur pose of preventing accidental tilting and dis charging of its contents. The frameB and with it the dumping-box C may be turned about the central holding bolt P, so as to be placed in any desired position upon the platform 0, in order that its contents may be discharged at either end or side of the latter, and the shaft 11 or the pivot of the dumping-box is placed at such a distance from the forward end of the frame B that the latter serves as a bearing or stop against which the box may abut, and by which its angle of inclination in dumping its load is determined. For this purpose the ends of the frame may be beveled, as seen at m, to give'proper support to and substantially.
requiring any change in said truck to adapt it for such use. Upon each side of the dumpingbox C I affix an ear or hook, g, by which the box may be suspended from a crane and removed from the car or swung into any given position;
or by means of the crane the box may be lowered to the surface of the earth, in which position laborers may easily shovel into it any desired material; or, still further, the box may be lowered into a hole in the earth, or into any comparatively inaccessible places, and after being filled, raised from out of it and deposited upon the car.
It will be seen that by the above construction I obtain an ordinary platform-car or a gravel-car. It will also be seen the entire device may be conveniently transported, as it may be dismembered and reduced to three distinct parts-the lower or platform -car, the upper or dumping-box, and the intermediate frame B.
One great object to be attained in the construction of dumping or gra\"e1-cars is to reduce the height as much as possible. While my construction of a car, as herein explained, permits me to produce an eminently low one, I am enabled to reduce the height even of this one by dispensing with the platform 0 and depositing the dumpingbox or hod C directly upon the trucks or upon cross-bars applied thereto, the construction of the intermediate frame B permitting this arrangementto be made.
What I claim as my invention is The intermediate frame or base B, constructed as herein shown and described, in combination with the dumping-box or hod C, provided or not with ears g, and hinged to said'framein themanner and position specified, andthe truck or car A, under the arrangement shown and set forth.
CHARLES BARRETT.
