vIo'roE MAEKK'ULA, -0F ABERDEEN, .wAsHmqro r WEATHER-VANE mnrgarortf To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR-MARKKULA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Aberdeen, in the county of Ghehalis' and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weather- Vane Indicators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to pro vide an improved weather vane indicator of simple and efiicient construction embodying essentially a vertically disposed shaft, a vane connected with the upper extremity of said shaft and an indicator operatively connected with the lowcr'end of said shaft.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents a'front elevation of the improved weather vane,
. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof,
Fig. 3 represents afragmentary vertical sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 represents a horizontal sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reterence numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates generally a casing or housing including atop 6, bottom 7, rear wall 8, side walls 9, and a front plate 10. The side walls 9 are-formed with openings 11 to permit access to the mechanism contained within the casing and the openings may be closed bydoors 12, hingedly secured to the side walls and adapted to be locked in closed-position by latches 13.
A supporting frame, preferably constructed of metal, is mounted within the'casing 5 and includes a base plate 14 supported upon the bottom 7 of the casing and having integral upstanding reinforcing flanges 15. Ad acent the front of the casmg the base plate '14 is provided with upstanding parallel standards or uprights 16, and at the-rear edge of said base plate is formed an up- Specification of Letters Patent.
ofthe base'plate is recessed, as indicated at l8,.t0 receive the lower tapered extremity of Patented Mar. 13, 1917. Application filed May 26, 1916. Serial No. 100,184.
a vertically disposed shaft 19'which extends upwardly through the top. 6 of the casing and is provided at its upper terminal-with a vane 20.
A dial 22 is set into the front plate 10 of the casing and receives a shaft 23 carrying an indicator hand 24:, which latter is movable over the dial 22 and is adapted to coact therewith to indicate the direction in which the wind is blowing, the dial being suitably marked, as clearly shown in Fig. 1,
to assist in ascertaining the direction of the wind. The rear portion of the shaft 23 is- ,7 rotatably supported in the uprights 16 and is rigidly connected with a pinion 25,- which meshes with a pinion 26 mounted-upon an intermediate shaft 27, which latter is also rotatably supported in the uprights 16 and is prdvided at its rear end with a bevel gear The gear wheel 28 meshes with a similar gear wheel 29 adjustable vertically upon the shaft 19, whereby rotary ,movementis transmitted from the shaft 19' through the bevel gear wheels 29 and 28, intermediate shaft 27 pinions 26 and 25, shaft 23 to the hand 24.
Intermediate the base plate-14 and the casing top 6, the shaft 19 is rotatably sup ported in an adjustable bearing plate 30, which is positioned upon the uprights 16 and 17, and is provided with depending lugs 31, which engage the innermost upright 16 and the upright 17. Lugs 31 are secured to the uprights 16 and 17 by. screws 32, which may be adjusted to move the bearing plate 30' forwardly and rearwardly with relation to the upright 17 and thus compensate for wear upon the bevel gear wheels '28 and 29.
A weather vane indicator comprising a casing, 11' frame mounted in said casing and including a base plate, and a plurality of uprights supported upon said base plate,-a
dlalpositioned upon the front of said casing, a shaft rotatably suppo'rted 1n said frame and projecting upwardly through said casin an indicator. shaft rotatably supported 1n several of said uprights, a hand carried by said shaft and movable over said diai, an intermediate shaft rotatably supvertical shaft, and means for adjusting said ported in several of said uprights and arbearing plate. 10 ranged below the indicator shaft, means con- In testimony whereof I aflix my signatilre meeting said indicator and intermediate in presence of two witnesses.
