Application filed February 15, 1915. Serial No. 8,249.
provide a simple, practical, and compara-- tively inexpensive latch of strong and durable construction adapted to be readily applied to a door and designed for use on store doors and various other places where it is desirable to notify the occupants of the entrance of a person and equipped with an alarm which will be sounded when the latch bolt is reciprocated.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of a latch constructed in accordance with this invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 22 of, Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the inner casing, and r Fig. 4.- is'a horizontal sectional view of th same. 7
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing. 7 V
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated thepreferred embodiment of the invention, 1 and 2 designate'outer and inner face plates secured to a door 3 by screws a, piercing the inner side plates or face plates 2 and engaging threaded sockets in posts 5 formed integral with the outer face plate 1 and extending inwardly from the inner face thereof as clearly illustrated in Fig.2 of the drawing. The inner face plate is provided with a transverse flange 6 located at the side edgeof the door and dcsigned'to be secured to the same by screws or other suitable fastening means and pro vided with an opening throughfwhich extends the nose of the latch bolt 8. The latch bolt 8 is guided in a suitable lug 9 and in an opening 10 in an inner substantially rectangular casing 11 which is secured to the inner face of the inner side or face plate 2.
The inner casing 11 is located within a recess 12 of the door and said recess 12 is extended above the casing and receives a bell 13 mounted on the inner side plate at the inner face thereof and adapted to be sounded by the means hereinafter described.
The bolt is actuated in its forward or outon the bolt and interposed between the head or outer enlarged portionthereof and the guide 9. The bolt is retracted by means of a bell crank lever 15 fulcrumed at its angle within the casing 11 at the bottom thereof adjacent to one of the corners of the same on a suitable stud 16 and having one of its arms extended upwardly to the bolt and provided at the upper edge therepf with a laterally projecting lug 17 which is arranged in a recess 18 in the outer portion of the bolt. The other arm 19 which is arranged in substantially a horizontal position is spaced from the bottom of the casing 11 and has a curved terminal portion 20 normally fitting against a rotary hub 21 mounted on a knob spindle 22 and provided at the top with a projecting lug 23 arranged to engage the terminal of the curved portion 20 of the .arm 18, whereby when the hub is partially rotated, the bell crank lever will be oscillated and the bolt retracted. Thd hub is also provided with an arm 24 extending from the bottom of the hub along the arm 19 and arranged to depress the same when the hub is rotated in the opposite direction from that which carries the lug 23 into engagement with the terminal of the curved portion 20. The hub 21 which is provided with a rectangular opening 25 to receive the knob spindle is provided at the outer side with a round extension 26 forming a journal fitting in a circular opening of the inner side plate. The spindle 22 is provided with inner and outer knobs 27 and 28 designed to be secured to. the spindle in the usual manner.
The outer side plate is equipped with a bearing plate 29 fitted against the outer face of the plate 1 and provided with spaced lugs 30 extending through the said plate 1 and secured to the same by means of wedge shaped keys 31 piercing the lugs and engaging the inner face of the side plate 1. T he outer bQZllIlg plate 29 is provided with a tubular extension 82 extending into an opening in the outer plate 1 and adapted to receive an outer bearing portion 33. The knob spindle, however, may be journaled in the inner and outer side or face plates of the lock in any other desired manner, and the said plates may be oi any desired form or ornamentation.
hen the bolt is reciprocated, the bell is struck a lever 34: tulcrunied intermediate of its ends on a pivot 35 and having an upper bcllhannner arm and a lower arm 37 extending into the path of an annular series of pins 38 projecting horizontally from ratchet wheel 39. The ratchet wheel 39 which is mounted on a suitable pivot or spindle 40 is provided at its periphery with teeth ll shouldered in one direction and adapted to be engaged by a pawl li The pawl which is located at the upper portion of the inner casing 11 extends longitudinally of the bolt and is connected at its outer end to the same by a pivot 43 projecting laterally from the bolt. The pawl l) which is maintained in engagement with the ratchet wheel by gravity is adapted to engage a tooth of the same and partially rotate the wheel when the bolt is reciprocated inwardly to open the door. This partial rotation of the ratchet wheel oscillates the lever which is impelled against the bell being moved in one direction by the ring 44.
T he lever 84 trips from pin to pin 38 and these tappets cause a succession of rings for notifying the occupants of entrance of a person. The device is particularly adapted for use in stores, otfices and various other places and notice will be given to a person in charge of the opening of the door by persons entering or leaving such place where the device is installed.
l/Vhat is claimed is 1. 1n alarm lock, a horizontally disposed bolt, a rotatable ratchet wheel located at one side of said bolt, a series of circumferentially disposed spaced pins carried by one face of said ratchet wheel, a pawl pivotally carried by the upper portion of said bolt and engaging the teeth on said ratchet,
whereby when said bolt is moved rearpins carried by one face of said ratchet wheel, a pawl pivotally carried by the upper portion of said bolt and enga ing said ratchet, whereby when said bolt is moved rearwardly, said ratchet wheel will be rotated, a lever pivoted intermediate its ends and arranged above and to one side of said ratchet wheel, the lower portion of said lever being disposed in the path ot the pins,
a bell arranged above said ratchet wheel, a tapper carried by the upper portion of said lever, a spring secured to the upper arm of said lever and arranged to normally hold said tapper out of engagement with said bell, and means to operate said bolt.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
