SAMUEL A. BOYD, 0F CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
GAS-BURNER FOR STEAM-BOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 13, 1917.
Application filed September 13, 1915. Serial No. 50,461.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. Born, a
citizen of the United States, residing atv Charleston, in the county of Kanawha, State of WVest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas- Burners for Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention is directed to improvements in gas burners for steam boilers, and has for its object to construct a device of this character comprising a plurality of burners so arranged so as to quickly and effectually heat the water in a boiler for generating steam therein.
A further object of the invention is to provide a burner of this type so constructed that flow of gas to the burners can be regulated.
With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is an end View of a boiler equipped with the burner.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan View of one of the burners;
Fig. f is a sectional View on line 4i of Fig. 8.
Referring to the drawing 1 indicates the boiler having the usual fire box 2, in which is mounted a plurality of burners 3, which extend longitudinally of the fire box and have their outer ends supported on the bridge wall 4:, and their inner ends supported by the front wall of the boiler foundation 6.
The burners 3 are supported with their sides engaged, and have their bottoms provided with openings 7, while their tops are provided with obliquely disposed jets 8, said openings serving to permit air to enter the burners so as to mix with the gas to insure proper combustion.
The heat from the burners will pass through the fire tubes of the boiler and will return to the stack 9. The air for the burners will enter the fire box of the boiler through the usual ash pit door 10. It will be of course understood that the burners can be placed on a boiler equipped with the usual grate bars.
It will be noted that the burners are ar ranged circularly so as to conform to the curvature of the boiler.
Arranged transversely of the front wall 5 is a gas main 11, which has connected thereto pipes 12. Each pipe is connected to a burner and adjacent the front end thereof. It will be of course understood that the main can be provided with a suitable form of valve to regulate the flow of gas to the burners.
What I claim is:
The combination with a steam boiler furnace, of independent burners of frusto-pyramidal formation arranged longitudinally of the fire box and below the boiler thereof and having their sides abutting to form a continuous concave upper surface, said burners having their bottoms provided with openings and their tops with obliquely disposed jets, a main gas pipe disposed along the front of the boiler below said fire box, and a feed pipe for each burner leading from said main pipe upwardly through said fire box and connected to said burner.
In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL A. BOYD.
Witnesses:
