To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Annnsnnnnn PLUnowem, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Vfaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in lllll'll'llelS for Telephones, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mufilers for telephones.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a, telephone having a. ready means for mutlling the voice of the operator when talking into the transmitter.

A further object of the device is the pro vision of a head receiving inclosure surrounding the transmitter of a telephone whereby the words spoken into the receiver are muffled and unintelligible by persons positioned adjacent thereto.

A still further object of the device is the provision of a telephone having the usual receiver, a casing being supportingly arranged with the transmitter of the telephone positioned therein, the casing having an inflated margin adapted for closely fitting over the base of the operator when talking through the transmitter whereby the spoken words are inaudible eXteriorly of the casing.

\Vith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and then claimed.

In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views:

The invention provides a portable telephone instrument having a weighted circular base 10 of substantially the usual form provided with a centrally positioned cylindrical standard or upright 11 to which the hook 12 of the receiver 13 is pivotally mounted. A special arrangement is provided for operatively arranging the usual form of transmitter 1&1 upon the standard 11. consisting of a curved vertical arm 15 secured upright on the top of the standard 11 while a slightly elongated dome-shaped casing 16 is revolubly mounted as at 17 to the upper end of the arm 15, said transmitter 1 1 being centrally secured within the said casing pivotally mounted upon a block 18 fixed. to the casing.

The usual. circuit wires 19 for the transmitter 141- are threaded through the arm 15 which is of tubular formation, the said wires being preferably arranged between the plush lining 20 and the casing 16 within the latter while an electric lamp 21 is arranged within the said casing having circuit wires (not shown) similarly arranged if desired.

An elliptical pneumatic band 22 is provided within the open end of the casing 16 having a curved inner face 23 adapted to resiliently engage the head of the operator when the operators face is thrust into the casing 16 for talking into the transmitter 14, as best illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings wherein the operators head is designated by dotted lines at 2%. An inflating nipple 25 is provided for the band 22 where by the inner chamber 26 may be maintained filled with air with the band properly influted.

In operation the person desiring to employ the telephone which is normally mounted upon a support such as 27 grasps the standard 11, removing the receiver 15 and placing the same to his ear while the operators face is positioned within the casing 16 for the purpose of talking through the transmitter 14;. The mouth of the operator being inclosed within the casing with the band 22 engaging the head, the words spoken within the casing cannot be overheard exteriorly thereof. A muffler for telephones is thus arranged being inexpensive to manufacture and only slightly increasing the weight of the telephone instrument.

What I claim as new is:

1. A device of the class described comprising a standard, a curved vertical tubular arm mounted upon the said standard, a hollow dome-shaped casing shiftably arranged Within the said arm swivelly attached at its upper side to the free end of the arm, a telephone transmitter operatively secured centrally Within the said casing, and a marginal contacting band arranged Within the open end or" the casing.

2. A device of the class described comprising a standard, a curved vertical tubular arm mounted upon the said standard, a hollow dome-shaped casing shiftably arranged with in the said arm swivelly attached at its upper side to the free end of the arm, a telephone transmitter operatively secured centrally Within the said casing, circuit Wires for the said transmitter threaded through the said arm, alighting member Within the said casing, a fabric lining Within the latter, and a pneumatic headengaging band marginally positioned Within the open side of the said casing.
