Be it known that I, CLEM NS DziEoIELEW- sin, a suhjeetot' the Czar of Russia, residing at Detroit, in the countyot' .Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Door Latches; and "I do declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention. such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich it appertains to make and. use. the same.
This inventioh relates generally to latches,
and more particularly to certain new and useful improvements in vehicle door-latches.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a latch for vehicle doors having means for actuating the same from the outside of the vehicle, and an additional means tor actuating the latch t'romthe Inside of the vehicle, said,adilitional means being I l r wholly mdependei it ot the first mentioned means.
Another object of the invention is to pro-' vide a device of this character which will be of simple, strong, durable and inexpensive construction, eliicient and reliable in opera tion. and well adapted-to thepurpose for which it is designed. I l
\Vlth these and other objectsi'n view, the inventigm consists of certain novel features of constiuction. and the combination and ar rangemcnt of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. Slidably mounted Within the casing 1 is a horizontal bolt 11, the outer end of which is beveled in the usual manner, While its inner end engages one" end of a spiral spring 12 secured in any suitable manner within the casing. One side of the bolt 11 is provided with an arcuate recess 13 which co'acts with a: cam member 14 on a horizontal spindle 15, whereby to actuate the bolt, it being understood that the latter is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 16 to allow said spindlevto project through the same. It. may be seen from this construction that under the tension of the spring 12, the bolt is normallyheld in its protracted position, but may be retracted upon actuation of the spindle 1.5. g
The, bolt 11 is provided with an inclined portion on its upper edge, here shown as beingin the form of an upwardly extending lug 18- having one of its edges inclinedi Slidably mounted between the flanges 5 within the upwardly extending portion 4 of the casing, is a vertical reciprocating member or bar 17. The lower end of this bar 17 is cut off angularly and bifurcated to receive an anti-friction roller 19. Arranged longitudinally of the bar 17 is an undercut slot 20 in which is received acoiled spring 21, one end ofthe latter resting against one end of the slot '20, while its other end rests against a stop 22 carried by the casing. This spring 21 normally holds the bar 17 in its uppermost or retracted position. The upper end of the bar is bifurcated as at 23 for engagement with the cams 24 carried by a second horizontal rotating spindle 25. By this arrangement, upon actuation of the spindle 2 5, the bar 17 is moved downwardly, the lower end thereof engaging the inclined lug 18, it being understood that the latter is arranged in the 'path of the same, whereby the bolt 11 is moved into its innermost or retracted position. It may also be understood that the bolt 11 is operated by the spindle 25 wholly independent of the spindle 15. v
The device will be found very convenient for use in connection with the swinging doors of automobiles, for it provides a .means for operating the latch from either side of the door, the upper spindle 25 being connected to the knob 7 which extends beyond the inside of the door, while the lower spindle 15 is connected to a second knob which is arranged on the-outs de of the door and in a'plane considerably below the plane of the inner knob, the be obvious.
From the foregoing connection with the accompanying clra ving, the construction and operation of the device will be readily understood without a more extended explanation.
As various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of this invention, 1 do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described other than that set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A device of the class described comprising a casing, a horizontal bolt slidably mounted in said casing and having means for actuating the same, a vertical guide in said casing, a vertical bar reciprocating in said guide and having a longitudinally extending undercut slot therein, coacting means arranged on said bar and said bolt for operating the latter independent of the first named means, means for reciprocating bar, a stop arranged in said casing, and
advantages of which will description, taken in I the upper a coiled spring disposed in said undercut slot and having one of its ends engaging one end of the same, the other end of said spring engaging said stop for normally holding said bar in its retracted position.
2. A device of the class described including a casing having a rectangular plate, a laterally inwardly extending flange formed on one end of said plate and having a bolt receiving opening therein, an elongated portion extending upwardly from the upper edge of said plate and being slit transversely from each edge, the portion between said plate and said slits being bent laterally inward to form parallel flanges andto leave an enlarged upper end, a laterally and in wardly extending tongue struck from said elongated portion at apoint adjacent said plate, a second plate abutting said flanges and having an enlarged upper end, said end having lateral flanges on its edges abutting the inner face of the first named enlarged portion, means for securing said plates together to form a guideway, a. second. rectangular plate having upper and lower latthe oral flanges abutting the inner face of first named rectangular plate and secured thereto, a horizontally slidable bolt mounted between the two rectangular plates and sliding through the opening in the first named flange, a lug on the upper edge of said bolt havin an inclined face, a vertically movable slotted bar in said guideway, a coiled spring in said slot, said tongue extending through said slot and contacting the lower end of said coiled. spring and acting as a stop therefor, the upper end f said spring contacting end of said slot, the lower end of said bar coacting with the upper incl -"d face of said lug, an operating cam engag the upper end of said bar and a second ope ating cam engaging said bolt whereby s bolt may be operated by one cam independently of the other.
