HAMILTON C. STUART, OF ST. JOHNSBURY, VERMONT.
GAS-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 29, 1916. Serial No. 122,898.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it lznor u t Hmrirlrox C. STUART,
a citizen of the United States, residing at;
St. Johnsbury, in the county of Caledonia and State of Ver1nont,'have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Gas- Burners, of which the following is a Speoilication.
This invention relates to an improved firfz' kindler and the principal object of the invention is to provide an improved fire kindler of the gas fuel type, an improved type of burner being provided so constructed that ashes cannot gather upon the upper end thereof to clodthe gas outlet opening,-
Another object of the invention is to so construct this burner that it will cover a relatively great amount of space with respect to the grate of the stove thus permitting the coal or other fuel in the fire box of the stove to be quickly ignited.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this kindler that it will not interfere with the removal of ashes from the ash pit.
This invention is illustrated in the accornpanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the fire box of a stove in sectionwiththe fire kindler in elevation.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view in side'elevation of the burner.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the burner.
Fig. 4 is avertical sectional view through i the burner taken at right angles to the showing in Fig. 3. I p
The stove indicated in general by the numeral 10 is provided with the usual fire box 11 which fire box has the grate 12 and positioned above the ash pit 13, The pipe 14 enters the ash pit through one wall thereof and is provided with a. valve 15 positioned outside th" -tove so that the gas can be'turned on. The burner-16which is con nectedj with the nipple 17 of the pipe 14 is provided with a base 18 having openings 19 formed therein to entering the burner to pass out throughthe Copies or this patent may be obtained for ermit air to pass into. the burner and to urthen permit fine dust- Patented Mar. 6, 1917.
bottom thereof. The gas passing out through the tip 20 mixes with the air and therefore this burner will burn a blue flame. The upper portion of this burner 16 is en larged to provide a flaring head 21 having a tapered upper edge portion in which there is provided outlet openings 22 through which the mixed air and gas will pass. This fialne which will he very hot will pass up through the grate bars and will engage the coal or other fuel positioned in the fire box thus ignitingthe fuel therein and starting the fire. After the lire is started, the valve 15 can be turned to cut off the supply of gasp Ashes falling through the grate will strike the sloping upper portion of this burner and will slide off and down into the ash pit thus preventing the burner from becoming clodded and making it necessary to remove the burner for cleaning. Any fine dust which might sift through the openings 22 will pass out through the air inlet openings 19 or if it does remain in the base of the burner 16, it will be so positioned that it will not interfere with the effective operation of the burner. a It will thus be seen that there has been provided a very effective fire kindlcr of the gas operating type.
What is claimed is A stove including a fire box having a grate, a .gas supply pipe entering the stove beneath the grate of the fire box and terminating in anupstanding nipple, and a burner mounted upon the nipple and includ- "ing a tubular body having vided with anipple receiving opening and a bottom proair inlet openings positioned about the nipfive cents eac yaddressing-the Commissioner of Patents, Wasnin'gtonJt 0.
