HANNAH JAcoBS AND HARRY JACOBS, or BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
HAIR DRYING AND STRAIGHTENING 00MB. Y
Patented ret. at', reir.
Application filed March 23, 1916. Serial No. 86,198.
To all rwhom t may concern:
Be it known that we, HANNAH JACOBS and HARRY JACOBS, citizens of the United States, and residents of Brooklyn borough, New York city, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Iair Drying and Straightening Combs, of which the following is a specification.`
This invention relates to improvements in hair drying and straightening combs and relates to that class of metal toothed combs wherein a means for heating the teeth is provided.
Numerous devices of this character are now on the market but none of them embody the improved features embraced in our invention. Y l
The various hair drying combs now in use, while they accomplish the work they are intended to do they are so constructed, that they cool too quickly. No provision is made in any of these devices to maintain a high degree of temperature for a prolonged period. And what we consider a further defect is the fact that the best devices, which employ a separate heating element, are not readily disassembled. A function which is greatly desired.
Our invention overcomes this last named defect and also provides a device wherein provision is made for maintaining a high temperature for a Amaximum period. We also provide a device which is simple in construction and economical in cost of construction.
We attain these objects by means of the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the complete device; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the comb proper or head with its attached insulating jacket; Fig. 4 is an end view of same looking in the direction indicated by the arrow X; Fig. is a view of the handle of the device and Fig. 6 is a view of the heating element.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout.
Our device consists of the hollow metal comb head 1 having comb teeth 2. The said hollow head is closed at one end 3 and pro- -cated in Fig. 1.
vided with an internal threaded portion 4 at the other end lin whichV a Acorrespondingly threaded portion 5 of the handle 6 engages. The threaded portion 5 is formed upon a metal shank 7 which is securedtothe handle Gby any suitable meanspreferably as indi- A recess 8 is formed upon theshank 7 and 1s adapted to receive a pin9 v` formed upon a heating element 10. This heating element is vmade of any metal or material which will Vfiber in the electrical trades.
The entire apparatus consists essentially7 of three members; namel', the head as embraced'in Fig. 3, the handle shown in Fig. 5, andthe heating element indicated in Fig. 6. These parts are all readily disassembled and may be made up intov a very compact bundle for convenience in carrying. r1`he illustrations are approximately full size.
In use the heating element l10 is heated to the desired temperature by any approved means and is then lifted by `means of the handle 6, which is made of wood or any material which is a poor conductorof heat. The pin 9 of the member 10 fits loosely in the recess 8 in the handle 6 and is therefore easilytaken up. The head 1 is then passed over the said heating element and the threaded portions on the head and handle" screwed tightly together. In a short time the heat of the heating element will be transmitted to the comb teeth and the comb is ready for use.
In Figs. 2 and 4 we have shown curved comb teeth but the regular straight teeth may be employed.
It is obvious that' we may embody various modifications" without departing lfrom the spirit of our invention. We do not, therefore, wish to limit ourselves to the particular construction shown but what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a hair drying and straightening comb, a hollow metallic head having comb-teeth formed thereon, a handle formed of heat insulating material and adapted to be detachand State of New York this 20th day of aloly eonnotedto the said head, a heating March A. I). 1916. e ement a a ted to engage Within the said head, a lftng pin formed upon one end of S' said heating element and a recess formed n l k aforesaid handle and adapted to engagethe Witnesses: said pin to lift same. e WILLIAM L. CHAMBERS,
Signed at Brooklyn n the county of Kings JAMES A. CORBETT.
