CORSET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. so, 191?.
Application filed September 26, 1916. Serial No. 122,302.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM GnnsI-i- NOIRTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved corset, the object of the invention being to provide a corset which is easy to manufacture and which is comfortable to wear, being very yielding and adapted to impart the desired form to the body of the wearer without unduly compressing or confining said body.
Said corset is made of one piece consisting of a central body portion and two extension pieces projecting from the opposite edges of the body portion. The central body portion encircles substantially the entire body and opens at the back, while the extension pieces extend from the opposite edges of the central body portion at the back around the body to the front where they are joined together by a buckle or other suitable fastening means. I
Said corset is provided with means for tightening the same to any desired extent at the waist portion and also at the hip portions, the latter means being for the purpose of shortening the distance across the abdomen or across the rear portion of the body below the waist line.
The invention consists of a corset formed as set forth in the following specification and particularlv as pointed out in the claim thereof.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the outside of a corset removed from the body and p xtended out in substantially a plane surace.
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a portion of a body with the corset partly attached thereto.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a portion of a body with a corset attached thereto.
Like numerals refer to like pants throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 is the central portion of the corset terminating substantially along the sides 6 and 7. 8 and 9 are extension pieces. The corset as a whole is formed of thin fabric and is provided with thin yielding ribs 10 of any thin yielding material and of any desired length. The extension pieces 8 and 9 are substantially of V-shaped contour, the upper edges 11 and 12 thereof forming continuations of the upper edge 13 of the central portion, while the lower edges 14 and 15 of said extension pieces join the sides 6 and 7 (Figs. 2 and 3).
The extension pieces 8 and 9 are provided with suitable fastening means, such as a buckle 16. The central portion 5 is adapted to substantially encircle the body. The extension piece 9 extends partly around the body in one direction inside said central portion (see Fig. 2). The free end of said below the waist line AB extension piece 9 or the buskle '16 is passed outwardly through an opening 17 acent to a rib 18. The extension piece 8 is car-. rled around the body and the free end there of attached to the buckle 16 as illustrated in Fig. 3.
Attached to each side of the front of the corset below the waist is a tongue piece 22 which engages a buckle 23 on a strap 24 and by tightening the tongue piece 22, either or both of them, the distance across the abdominal portion of the corset may be reduced and vice versa.
In order to reduce the distance across the rear portion of the corset below the waist line tongues 25 are fastened to the body portion of the corset in the region of the hips and are arranged to intersect the tongue pieces 22 and pass through slots 37 in the body portion of said corset, thence passing toward the back of the corset along the inner surface thereof and then passing through slots 38 after which they will engage buckles 26 on straps 27, said straps 27 being fastened to the body portion ofthe corset. By tightening the tongues 25 the distance across the rear portion of the corset below the waist line may be reduced and vice versa.
The central front lower portion of the corset is preferably left open at 28 and straps 29 are provided to which hose supporters may be attached,-while the rear of the corset is open along the portions 30 and 31 on the opposite edges of the central portion of the corset, and a piece of elastic webbing 32 is fastened to one side of the central portion ofthe corset and is provided with buttonholes 33 to engage buttons 34 attached to another piece of elastic webbing 35 fas- -It will be noted that the upper and lower edges of said extension pieces converge from the sides of the central portion of the corset toward the waist line and that the free ends of said extension pieces terminate substantially at the waistline of the corset.
To put on the corset the arms are slipped through the shoulder straps 36 when the corset is in the open position illustrated in Fig. 1. The extensionv piece 9 is then carried around the body as shown in Fig. 2, the buckle being passed through the opening 17. Then the extension piece 8 is carried around the body and the end thereof engaged with the buckle 16 as illustrated in Fig. 3. It is evident that the extension piece 8 can be drawn up to any desired extent to tighten the corset upon the body or can be released to loosen the corset upon the body and thatwhen this is done the two extension pieces draw the body in along the gradually converging upper and lower edges 11 and 1d of the piece 8 and along the upper and lower edges 12 and 15 of the piece 9.
If it is desired to shorten the distance across the front or abdominal'portion ofv the corset the tongues 22 are tightened and vice versa. If it is desired to shorten the distance across the rear portion of the cor- Having thus explained my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is: c 7
A one piece corset comprising a central portion adapted to encircle the body, an extension piece on each of the opposite sides of said central portion adapted to extend partly around the'body in opposite directions, means to fasten the free ends of said extension pieces together at the waist line, a tongue piece attached to each side of the corset below the waist line adapted to extend a portion of the distance across the front of said corset, means to fasten the free ends of said tongue pieces to the body portion of said corset at the front thereof, another tongue piece attached at each side of the corset below the waist line intersecting said first named tongue piece and arranged to pass through a slot in the body portion of said corset and extend along the inside surface of said corset and thence pass through a second slot to the outside of said corset, and means to fasten the free ends of said last named tongue pieces to the body portion of said corset at the vback thereof.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set' my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
