Description
C R JLJJ MELDRIM R UND BOX INVENTOHS gsSraans PATENT ormon- GHARLDES ,'lit.` MELRBIM. QF CINOINNATUS., v.MID JQSIAH J. MELDRIM, or TBUXTON, NEW i' YORK. 4
nonni; Box.
To ell 'Milioni/t may concern Befit known that we, V@Hannes B. Min.`
mina, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cincinnatus, in 4the county of county of Cortland and State of New York,
'have invented a new and Improved Round V I?o x,.of which the following is a full, clear,
`and `exact description.
Our invention relates more particularly to a' cheese box though capable of use for` other purposes.
Cheese box bodies as heretofore. made have usually been cut o r veneered around the log about onesixth of an inch thick and we have found by actual experience that there; Ais Waste of approximately one-third from selected veneer logs and a waste of approxi-V mately one-half of veneersniade .from ordi-l nary good veneer log, owing to the presence 4of 'knots and .other imperfections which must be trimmed out of the veneer as waste. The prime object ofA our invention 1s to overcome the wastage of material and to `substitute other and cheaper kinds of wood,
ehn being now `chiefly used', for forming cheese boxes' and the like.v
` A further .object is to produce at a great `reduced cost a box as good .as those now produced or better. To obtain the'new resuit We'form `our.improved box of two thin ,clieesebox hoops 1or thicknesses, each cut lone#twelfth of an' inch thick, more or less,
'. v,and we bend, at the saine operation, the two vhoiopslaid closely togetlier around the eircled head' so that the box will be practically '--the same as if formed of a single hoop.
In forming the cover of the box, we prolayer or: liner.V 'lhe two layers are 4o'verfv4 lapped and fastenedbynailsor tacks, 'the' layers between the overlapped. ends having direetfcontact with each other and being pnglued. The variation of the grain in the l'..trvo hoopsVtogether with' the fastening of Speeicaton of Letters Paten t. Patented Feb, 13, 1 Application led May 19, 1916. Serial No. 98,592. I
Vthe same oy their' overlapped ends, results in a boxy of increased strength and dexibility.
The ini ention will be particularly explained in the specific description followlng.
Referente is to be had to the accoinpany-V ing drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the i.
views. .i
Figures 1. and 2 are perspective views of the inner a nd outer layers forming the body of the box;
Fig. 3 i; a perspective view of the' said "layers, ben; into rounded form having their ends overl ipped vand fastened;
Fig. l is a vertical section of the complete box;
5i; an enlarged transverse section through the two layers of the body;
Fig. 6 is aplan view of the layersof material from whichthe rim of the cover is formed.
i In carry: ng ont our invention, the body isformed of an outer layer 1 and an inner layer 1l of veneer. The said layers are laid together aid with one operation are bent into rounded forni, Fig. 3, with the ends'4 overlapping'. The overlapped ends are fastened by lacks or iia'ils l2. Between the overlapped fastened ends, the two layers of material a1 `e iin-glued, the opposed surfaces contacting direct with each other. p The grain of the vtwo layers runs 1n the same directlon, that is to say, around the box but tl .ere will be a variation in the grain since the respective layers necessarily present' thi grain differently because the grain cannot 'be identical in forni and position even 'iii two veneers cnt from the saine lo'g. Moreover, the imperfections of the respective layers will 'vary in. positions.
The usual round head or bottom 13 is.
employed and a hoop 1 4 is appliedto the body at tte bottom, at the exterior, said hoop, thus extending over the overlapped ends and b1 :ingztacked in the nsuallmanner. The hoop l l, preferably, is composed of two thicknesses.Y the grain of the veneers running as in the 1b( fdy, around the box.
In forming the cover 15, the same is made round as n: ual, and the flange 16 thereof is produced'irom two thicknesses ofV veneer,
lfoe
the same an the body, there being an outer a114) of the respective layers runs aroun layer 17 and an inner layer 18. The raliln t e cover so that one thickness will reinforce the other, the same as in the body.
We iind that by the above described invention We are enabled to reduce the Wastage from a possible 50% to approximately 5%, and We produce a box of great strength and fiexibility. The employment of the two thicknesses of material, and the grain running in the same direction and around the box, enables us to utilize much cheaper wood than that required for the production of boxes of this'character from one thickness of of veneer bent together into round form, the
grain of'both thicknesses running in a direction around the body, the ends-being over lapped, and fasteners extending through said overlapped ends, the said thicknesses 25 of Veneer bent together into round form, the 30 grain of both thicknesses running in a direction around the body, the ends being overlapped, and fasteners extending through said overlapped ends; the material of said thicknesses being in direct contact and un- 35 united except at the overlapping portions together with. a round bottom in said body,
a hoop around the body at the bottom,"said hoop extending over the said overlapped ends and being composed of two layers of 40 t veneer with the grain lrunning around the box, and a cover h aving a depending rim vcomposed of two thlcknesses of veneer both of which have the grain running'around the cover. y
