IMPROVEMENT IN BAG-HOLDERS AND FILLERS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. LUM, of Waterloo, in the county of Jefferson, in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain Improvements in Bag-Holders and Fillers, of which the following is a specification:

The object of this invention is to so construct a bag-filler that it can be used as a bag-holder, and receive the grain and conduct it into the bag; and it consists in the construction of the filler or shovel, that when it is placed upon a support it will hold the bag open to receive the grain that is to fill it, or, when desired, be used as a grainshovel by which the grain is lifted and delivered into a bag.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of the holder and filler. Fig. 2 is a front View of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of the filler; and Fig.

4 is a back View of the same.

A represents the frame of the support for the bag-holder in position, with a bag-holder and bag thereon. The frame A is made in two parts and hinged together by hinge a. A is an adjustingbar that is pivoted to one part, and has notches a thereon, by which it is hooked onto a stud or knob, a ,.on the other part, and so as to spread the feet or bottom ends of the supportfurther apart, or hold them when brought nearer together. a is an upright, broad piece, put between the transverse girts of the front partof frame A for the bag to rest against while being filled, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2. B is the bag-holder, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and is made of sheet metal, in the form shown, with a long staple, [1 fast on and proj ectingfrom opposite edges thereof, which, when the holder is in position, as seen in said Figs. 1 and 2, rest in hooks a that project from the front of frame A, and keep the holder with the bag in position. b is a band, oval in form, surrounding the lower or back end of the holder or filler, and is securely attached to the body of B, and when so secured has mortises b 12 through it and the metal that forms the body of the holder or filler, and projecting from it are three or more hooks or cars, 01, over which the hem of the bag is placed, and by which the bag is supported. B is the head or back of the holder, also made from sheet metal, and curved back, as seen in Figs. 3 and 4, and has as many hooks upon it as there are mortises in and through bend 11 so that point for easy handling it when used as a shovel or scoop. G is the bag to be filled, attached to the band 11 of the holder B by passing the bag around the holder and band, with the hem of the bag above the hooks or ears (1, and drawn tight around the same and folded over in front, when the bent-spring c is forced over the folded bag and band, which holds it firmly in its place to be filled. c is a metal spring, bent into the form and used to hold the bag upon the band b as seen in Fig. 1.

The holder B with the bag attached can be placed upon the supporting-hooks a as seen in Fig. 1, or if the bag is too long to be thus hung, the bottom of the projecting side staples may be placed in hooks a and thus hold a longer bag in proper position for filling. Any number of intermediate bars may be attached to the staples b to accommodate the different lengths of bags, and have them at the proper height for successfulfilling. The bail-handle B can be removed from the scoop B when necessary, or when used as a bag-filler, as can also the head or back of the scoop when so used, as is seen in Fig. 2. The supporting frame A, by being constructed as shown and described, is capable of being folded together when not in use, by which means it will occupy but little space when it is desirable to store it away after being used. Constructing the scoop to be used as aba-g-holder is believed to be novel and of great utility, as when not wanted as a bag-holder it is readily transformed into a scoop or shovel to handle or stir grain, as it will be found to be ahandy tool for that purpose, the operator taking hold of handle I) of the head B, when booked in place within the band b with one hand, and the other hold of the bail-handle B, when it will be found that it is easier to lift and stir grain or fill it into a bag than by the use of an ordinary scoop-shovel, because you lift the grain directly, and without making one hand the fulcrum over which the grain is raised by bearing down upon the extreme end of a handle of such scoop or shovel.
